Who is the best athlete to come out of your High School or State

Best player to come out of my high School, Pontotoc High in Pontotoc, Mississippi was Steven Pugues. This dude was an all around athlete in Baseball/Football and Basketball. He was drafted in 1987 by the Detroit Tigers. This dude was the real deal. He retired in the mid 90's. Another person that graduated from my high school that was good is Wesley Walls. He played for the 49ers, Saints and Carolina.

The Best athlete to come out of Mississippi is Walter Payton.

The best athlete to come out of NY. Well, in football it's Jim Brown with Marvin Harrison closely in the mix.

Best athlete to come out of Mississippi is Steve McNair. That guy was all-world at every damn thing he did.

It would have to be Trumaine Johnson for my high school (Baker). Any old school SWAC fans defintely rememeber Trumaine.

I need some help on all of La .... So many I can't begin to name the best one.

I started to name some, but you're right, there are too many.

BTW, no love for your boy Hokie Gajan?

You know when I first wrote my post, I started to say "some will say Hokie was the best player out of Baker".. LOL

High School - Brandon Jacobs

As a senior, rushed for 3,022 yards and 38 touchdowns, averaging 8.6 yards per carry...Also returned eight kicks for touchdowns...Led team to the 4A state semifinals...USAToday.com All-America Team...Orlando Sentinel All-Southern Team...Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Class 4A all-state team...PrepStar All-Region...Louisiana High School Coaches Association Football All-Star...As a junior rushed for 1,783 yards and 18 touchdowns and caught three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown...Rushed for 233 yards on 26 carries and scored a touchdown in the Tri-Parish All-Star Game...Also played basketball.

Boy,

Do I remember Trumaine. I enjoyed watching him play. Even though he was killing my team.

It is hard to say who is the best athlete to ever come out of the state of Texas; there are simply too many. Just for conversation I will say Jack Johnson.

Louisiana:

Lou Brock........Major League Hall of Fame, Former Base Stealing Record Holder.
Rodney "Dice" Milburn........1972 World Record Holder and Gold Medalist.

It is hard to choose between these 3 world class athletes. I don't know if either of you all are wrong. What is even more interesting is that all three of these guys come from the SWAC..... to Mississippi!

My high school: Ascension Catholic

Germaine "Juice" Williams -- leading rusher in Louisiana high school history (late 80s to early 90s); he ran for 8,000 or 9000 yards. He signed with LSU, but never reached expectations (I think this was the Curley Hallman era). Signed with Cowboys in the league.

I would have to say Marty Carter from LHS, or maybe Mike Cameron from LHS, maybe even Walt Harris from LHS. But all of that may change soon...keep your eyes on the runningback at Florida named Skyler Thornton, another product of LHS. He ripped FSU to shreds a couple weeks ago.

Hometown/H.S. - Norman Bradford, RB (football/basketball); Grambling

Robert Williams TE, LB, P (football/baseball); Grambling

Both starred at my alma maters, Jonesboro-Hodge H.S. and were blue-chip prospects and Parade all-americans.

And, although I never saw him play personally, but my cousin Jerry "Grey Ghost" Robinson is considered, by my elders and old heads, to be the best athlete ever to come out of Jackson High School (all-black H.S. before integration) or Jonesboro, La. He starred at Grambling during late 50's/early 60's then played 10+ years with Buffalo Bills.

As far as greatest athletes to come out of Louisiana, that's a tough one, but I am biased toward the "G." So, I would start with our Hall of Famers Buck Buchanan, Willie Davis, Willie Brown, Charile Joiner, or Willis Reed. In their prime, each dominated their respective era.

Oh, I forgot about frat from LSU...Shaq, who also dominates his era and is a future Hall of Famer. And, Bill Russell played high school ball in La., I think, before enrolling at Univ. of San Francisco.

Russell Maryland (Football)/Quinten Richardson(Basketball) Whitney Young High School (Chicago). They were both first round draft picks (Russell went #1 in '91).

From Scotlandville High

Al Beauchamp, Kirk Franklin (Track, broke Jesse Owens High School record, went to Grambling), Freddy Jackson QB, went to Jackson State.

From LA, there are so many that haven't been mentioned. Elvin Hayes, the running back for the Rams (Faulk).

BTW, some of those guys you are naming for Grambling were from outside LA, Buch Buchanan was from Mobile.

Hmmm..... From my old HS(Callaway/Jackson, MS) the best athlete to come out has to be Roy Coleman. He signed with Ole Miss in 76-77 time frame and never got a chance to do much but back up ole John Fourcade. Roy was an All-State Qb and All-state baseball player/pitcher. Callaway won the state in both sports his senior year I believe. Tough one to pick just one since we had Eddie Archie and Aaron Brandon who went on the star at Alcorn in basketball. Then we had Larry Friday, Tyrone Keys and Don Horn to play at Ms State and USM. Friday played with the Browns and Keys with the 85 Super Bowl Bears.

The most successful Callaway alum who also is a JSU alum would be current NFL All-Pro WR Jimmy Smith of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has had the best career of any of my HS players.

Best in the State ever is hard. Payton, Rice and McNair are tough. I will give it too Walter. He could play many positions. Heck he was even the Bears emergency Qb. He used to placekick and punt at JSU. Superb athlete. BTW, the SIP has also produced soon to be HOF Qb Brett Favre. Ole Archie Manning wasn't a bad athlete either. LOL. I almost forgot about Hugh Green who went to Pittsburgh and then to the NFL. I think he was from Natchez.

That same Freddy Jackson is the Associate Head Coach at Michigan.

State: Waaaayyyyyy too many to name but I'll go with Jesse Owens.

H.S.: Highly debateable but Fred (49'er) Beasley comes to mind right away.

Man...you know I was thinking the same name...but this is too old school for some folk....Dude was from my hometown and was All-State as a WR for JS CLark High, an all district forward for the basketball..and at the same time was running 13 flat 100 meters hurdles.......on grass.

Best highschool athlete I have ever seen, bar none.
