What is the greatest upset in any sport in your school's history?

Yes, I know, this is somewhat of a cheezy question, but this damn coronavirus has brought everything to a halt. Nothing is going on right now. And I'm in need of content for the front page. I plan to write a story based on your responses. So help a brother out.

Again, this is for ANY sport. Tell me the year it happened, and (if possible) why?

Thank you all for your help and continue to keep yourselves safe.

When we first came to the SWAC and Roland Hayes our QB singly handley beat Southern running the option by himself in Lewis Crews stadium.

I would say a tie:
In 1987 when Southern U. Baseball Jags upset #1 Cal State Fullerton in the regional playoffs
In 1993 when Southern U. Running Gunning Basketball Jaguars upset ACC Tourney Champ Georgia Tech

Our win against Georgia Tech is probably the biggest in terms of publicity. The baseball wins over Cal Fullerton and LSU (2019) are biggest in terms of rankings.

Looks like we were typing the same thing at about the same time.....LOL

Yes, Ben Jobe had those running-gunning Jags on a roll!

Our win over defending Natioanl Champion Rice and National number 1 seed in 2004 Houston Regional in Baseball. The pitcher, Phillip Humber was the #3 pick in the draft that year and threw a perfect game or a no hitter in MLB.

Who did the Jags lose to in the second round game that year after beating GT? Was it Rhode Island, George Washington?

I believe it was George Washington U. We started the game off losing 10-0 and 10 points was the final margin of the loss. I vaguely remember them having a 7-foot center Yankedira or something like that....LOL

If one was to ask me the losses that I hated the most I would say tie again:

Baseball- 2003 Loss to Baylor in the 2nd Round of the USM regionals after winning the 1st game against #1 Seed USM, Southern U. game 2 reliever loses the lead and the ball game thus forcing the Baseball Jags to have to play a 2nd game the same day against #1 Seed instead of advancing in the Winners Bracket (That was S.U.'s Ricky Weeks led, Golden Spikes Award winner, senior year and the Jags was ranked 30th in the country).

Basketball-1993 The loss to GW, who I felt like we were a better team but not on that day. Consequently missing out playing against Michigans FAB 5 in the Sweet 16.

So close but yet so far.....

Valley being within one win of the Super Regionals in softball in 2003. All we had to do was beat St. Francis again but couldn't do it

In football, It was 1990 when Valley beat Grambling 38-20 when they were #1 and #2 in the polls

Winning the 1977 Division 2 Soccer National Championship vs Seattle Pacific
Winning the 1979 Division 2 Soccer National Championship vs Eastern Illinois

As far as I can remember - JSU over UCONN and Donyell Marshall in the first round of the NIT in 1993 in Connecticut. Lindsey went for 39. I think that same year we upset #25 Tulane??

AAMU defeating Florida A&M in 1979(Orange Blossom Classic?) after they had just won the national title in 1978. It was also their first year in the MEAC.
I remember that game well as a kid. It was in Huntsville at Milton Frank Stadium. The energy after AAMU won was awesome. Plus to give AAMU credit, Ray Greene had a talented group of players recruited by Theo Danzy that would advance to the D2 Semis.

but I have another one from the history books....

@Kenn Rashad 1986, AAMU faced an undefeated Tennessee State football team (9-0-1) coached by Bill Thomas that was ranked #1 in D1AA and beat them 7-6 in Nashville. Something about that win was special because it would be a long time before TSU's teams would be dominant like they had been in previous decades.

On the other hand, we beat them again soundly the next year with Ray Greene returning as coach and as TSU transitioned to the OVC, we would not play them again until 98. Every time, and I mean every time we start winning in the series they drop us....LOL
