Weezy is mad!

yup, because the earthquake in Haiti (co-worker's fire) was 5 years after katrina. (brother's fire)
Thats the problem .....you gave 9times more money to ya co-worker, when ya brother still aint been living right or rebuild since.....

Any destruction is bad and it's "bad" to compare who's destruction is worse, but let's be real. Not to minimize Katrina and its destruction, but the destruction and devastation in Haiti was unmatched. The last I saw, the death toll was over 200K. 200,000 people killed. Think about it. Over a million people left homeless. A million. With no warning, in the blink of an eye. In a matter of mere minutes (or however long the quake lasted) . Infrastructure in total ruins. And this was already a small, poor country that didnt have anywhere close to the means that the US has.

I had relatives who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. They bolted to Mississippi when the storm hit. I, along with my cousins helped them with water, money, food, and helped them register with FEMA. On top of that I donated money and clothes to other families as well who were affected by the Hurricane and to the overall Red Cross fund they setup. This year I donated to the Haiti relief effort as well.

I just think if people want to give, let them give. If they don't want to give, so be it.

I agree with you. But Me personally in my posts, where referring to how AMERICA is with giving to other countries.. I just used people as an example.

Smoke,
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. And this was BEFORE the earthquake. The poverty that was in pre Katrina New Orleans would not begin to compare to the poverty that was widespread in Haiti.

I watched the destruction and pain of Katrina with a heavy, heavy heart. And I wanted to do something and I gave what I could. I watched the destruction and pain of the earthquake with a heavy heart too. And I wanted to do something and I gave what I could. The pain wasn't lessened because the Haitians are not US citizens. To make it even more personal, their ancestors are my ancestors, your ancestors, and the people of New Orleans ancestors too. They probably just got "dropped off" a lil sooner than our ancestors did.

Sorry, but I dont believe whatever shortcomings happened with Katrina is a reason to not respond to the earthquake.
Suffering and pain is suffering and pain is suffering and pain.....

but smoke,
there is nothing to be done now about the initial response to Katrina. It was a poor, slow response. I don't think anybody would argue with that. well, other than maybe Bush and ex-FEMA director Mike Brown :scared:

why would the US make the same mistake again 5 years later?

It's not our responsibility...so it wouldn't be our mistake.

To whom much has been given, much is expected. Plus, the US is the greatest power in the world. And Haiti is not some far away land. Haiti is our neighbor. And not just the US, but the world responded to Haiti.

I'm not gonna go back/forth on whether we should help outside the US or not...

My gripe isn't with the US, per se...but Black folks don't help those around them but quick to text a donation across the world...or to our neighboring country.

Not everyone that's down and out in our communities are there b/c of their own doing.

Even on TSPN in the roundtable forum when it was discussed (help to Haiti)...Blacks upset at the U.S.'s response b/c it seemed slow (when it really wasn't)...how about we get upset at the U.S.'s response with the way our communities are and the unequal ways of this country towards us.

But as you pointed out...they are our ancestors...somewhere along the line.

damn, guess I missed that thread where it was already discussed. To each his own, but no way could I watch that level of destruction, despair, pain in Haiti and not be moved. That would not change because of any previous action (or inaction) by the govt.
And as the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make it right. If we got it wrong with Katrina........

Doing some research about the international response to Hurricane Katrina I found that many countries gave money and supplies for the relief effort. Some countries even sent their own troops over here to help out. I found it surprising that the Cuban national baseball team donated some of their winnings from the World Baseball Classic as well. And those players are super poor. They risk death to come over here and play ball.

I think a lot of the frustration comes from the response state side and the poor job FEMA did as well as the total mismanagement of funds. Additionally, a lot of New Orleans and the surrounding areas are still shells of their former selves five years later. But I don't think the transgressions of local, state and federal government should be taken out on the public.

and in the immediate aftermath, I truly cant see how anybody would be opposed to any of these early responses to provide BASIC stuff. We got a helluva lot of wherewithal and expertise in this country that can help (save lives, provide basic necessities, rescue efforts, etc) . I will NEVER understand how we would or should stand idly by and watch it happen and not respond.

Another thing about katrina... The U.S. declined to accept $millions worth of aid and supplies from other countries for Katrina. I still don't get that.

Which has caused a mismanagement of anger. People need to be angry at the organizations/administrations for not distributing the funds correctly, not at people for giving in general. They gave to both(well I gave to both), but because my money didn't get to the Katrina victims, you're mad that I gave and it got to Haiti? Our frustrations are pointed in the wrong direction, and not to mention we are under a total different presidential administration than when Katrina hit.

neither do I.

Again...I'm not talking about the U.S. helping. If there's money allocated for that purpose (international help)...then yes that's what it should be used for.

My focus is on my next door neighbor posting on fb talking about making donations to Haiti and when I go hit them up to purchase a ticket to support the after school youth program in our community that's losing funds from the state, all I hear is..."what is the Mayor doing? what is the state doing? I aint got it...I aint got it"!!! :shame:

Then some of us wonder why...

I see validity on both sides of this debate. New Orleans (and the Gulf Coast) need AMERICA. Haiti needs the WORLD. :lecture:

because sadly we are a society that is reactive, rather than proactive. We are quick to offer assistance when disaster strikes(Haiti), versus laying ground work to keep things in order to prevent catastrope(in that case, the losing of funds for youth programs), or to be already prepared if and when something we have been warned about that is beyond us happens(katrina).

I hear you and I understand. Truly, I do. But at the same time, surely you can also understand the difference between a catastrophic disaster that instantly killed over 200,000 folks and left millions homeless, destitute and without any means to help themselves will get a different reaction than donating to the after school program.

Ya'll talkin bout a person Donating... Im talkin about AMERICA NOT TAKING CARE OF HOME FIRST! I could give two pot pies less what you doing with YO wallet. But If im paying Taxes, then i expect that my Dollas are being paid to take care of HOME first.

Now personally, I've done PLEEEEENTY for NOLA be it community service or donating over $400. I've also donated $20 to Haiti. Now I fel bad about what Happened, but things happen all over the world. I can't rush to help you clean yo house when My house been messed up for a week......

what catastrophe on the scale of that earthquake is the USA facing at HOME?

I (United States) may not be eating filet mignon every night at HOME, but hey, at least I am eating. If I KNOW my neighbor (Haiti) has NOTHING to eat, NO water to drink, NO where to lay his head, NOWHERE to go to school, am I wrong to help, just because I aint eating filet mignon?

btw, you just might be surprised at how many of your tax dollars go out of the country.
