Was It Just Me?

I'm a newbie to this thread but I was reading and I had to speak up. I don't understand how die hard Jukebox fans can be disappointed or shocked with the no unis look. I was at the game and yes it was hot as he--. When the su marched in and I saw the shorts and t-shirts I was not shocked at all. This is not the first time that the Jukebox has showed up for a game without unis for inclimate weather reasons-Miss Valley `04, t-shirts and jogging pants. I was at the 'o6 PV game when they wore the unis and got soaked and had to go back to the busses and change into t-shirts and jogging pants.

Do I prefer unis, yes but lets be realistic. The issue becomes uniform or uniformity. It did not take away from there show as much as Famu having uniforms on added to theirs. Jukebox still looked good even in t-shirts and shorts.

I know most of us like to stick with tradition (full uniforms at all games/performances), but shouldn't we do better when we KNOW better?!?!

I mean, if you know you're going to be BAKING in the sun at the hottest time of the day in the summer, and your ENTIRE band is fully capable of pulling off a clean, uniformed look with less clothing, doesn't it make more sense to wear the shorts/T-shirts?

Now had SU been in shorts and T-shirts in mid-October at a 6 p.m. game, THEN I would've been like: WTH? :xeye:

I was sitting on FAMU side (against the sun), and I could see the sun hitting SU side HARD!

With all of the emphasis on heatstroke these days (specifically among NFL players recently), Dr. J is correct in prioritizing the health of his students.

Considering that it was a day game in borderline dangerous heat/humidity, better to be safe than sorry.

Co-sign.

Who is going to call a parent to tell them that their son/daughter passed out in Birmingham, AL from heat exastion.
Maybe next year they should wear break away track pants.

+1 on this.

I love the look and tradition of "The S" and wore it proudly Back in the day but reality is reality.

Some one them will have to understand..........
There are different times....

IN ADDITION to that, several folks fainted on the SU side and the ambulance was called.... I thought it was too hot to have it on. I definitely prefer the Uni's but again it was too dayum hot....SU was sitting with the sun facing them....FAMU had a lil' bit of shade on the WEST side.... (Sun rises in the east and sets in the west)....so anybody sitting in the east had the sun in their face ALL DAY!

As for performances. I liked both, but at the same time, something about FAM didn't strike me right. I always enjoy the JUKES and I know I am biased on that. However, the field show can get changed up a bit. I did like the group march by SU.

The heat this year was the second hottest of the 3 Meac/SWAC games. The first year was horrible. And we have tried to make mention to ESPN that if you want a better crowd to display on TV, the kickoff has to be at 6 or 7 pm. It is just too hot in the day for the casual fan to even think about coming out at that time in the day. If the game had been at 6, it would have had 50k easily. If Miles/Skegee got 39k, no telling what the attendance for real SU/FAMU would have had.

As for the bands, I didnt think anything was wrong with SU appearance at all, it was still crisp and smooth. I also felt their show was much better than Fam's. Maybe FAMU has such a standard to live to - but whenever you outnumber another band 2 to 1, your sound should at least be that. SU had a better CLEANER sound.

My opinion, Southern did what they always do, and they did it well. The Hundred did what they do, and they did it well. It was the 1st game for both bands, and both gave solid but unspectacular halftime performances, but I was impressed by both bands.

If you have ever been around an SU / FAMU game you know that this conversation could go on about a bunch of stuff that doesn't even matter. LOL!!!

I wasn't there for pregame

Halftime was even.

5th Quarter: Southern: Loud, Energetic, Top 40, The Michael McDonald Piece
FAMU: Loud, Energetic, Dynamic Contract, Musicality, Variety

I enjoyed the Hundred's performance in the 5th more because I prefer, variety, and musicality. Both bands were solid though.

The 5th Quarter actually started late in the 3rd quarter, and ended after the game.

Southern's band did an excellent job of managing their tunes based off of what was happening with the football game. The HUNDRED was simply trying to give The S the Bizness!!!

What did it for me was that The Hundred was VERY prepared and disciplined. Furthermore, played a wider variety of music than Southern in the 5th.

I love both bands and am sooooo happy that this game is on our schedule to stay, and can't wait for next year to come soon enough!!! I enjoyed both bands.

Yeah but there is actual footage of your beating. It was not pretty. They keep replaying it over and over again. :wavey:

If that makes an ass rape by okra go down better, then you just have at that one, hea? :wavey:

I can tell you I didn't care for FAMU's song selection. :smh: Had I known it would go down the way it did, I would have dipped before the 5th.

Yo @zz say that all the time but you end up staying.

As somewhat of an oldhead, and not one of Mr. J's biggest supporters. I was dissappointed not to see the unis. I thoght that they might go and change before halftime like they did againt PV last year, and when they didn't I was pissed. I remember my days in the Juke when we went to the Plantation.....or Reservation (whatever the hell it was supposed to be), Leon Spinks Stadium in Lorman, and sat in that heat with full unis on and the only relief you got was to put that cape over your head. But in defense of the Jukebox, I realized myself how hot it was when I noticed at the start of the second half, I wasn't sweating anymoreTand not because it wasn't hot). I had to drink tap water to bring my temp down and replace fluids.
So in defense of Mr. J. the right thing was done. Because we rather be on here arguing this point than mourning the loss of one of our own who had an unknown pre-existing condition that could have led to a tragedy. Mr J. would have had to deal with that, not us.
Doc Greggs on the other hand would not have given anyone permission to become sick; and that was it! If you got sick you hoped you would die because you knew your ass was zipped when you returned to the B.R..... reason, to damn soft!

The only liquid that we were ever given at a game was the bottles of Crown and cups of beer that were passed covertly to us by the old Jukes sitting in the section directly behind or next to the Jukebox.

Long Live The Human Jukebox
and the Legacy of Doctor Isaac "Patty" Greggs!

AMEN! we played in las vegas with unis on and it was a million degrees! A&T had folks passin out everywhere. and it was nighttime! we were a lot harder than these new guys but hey.......

lol....10 years later and them naggas was still doing that....Yeah Doc would'nt give a d@mn how hot it was.....If you would've said we're going to be on TV you would've had that d@mn uniform on.....

It seems like shat is just getting weak....If your body is conditioned and you drink plenty of fluids and eat prior to I just dont see anybody passing out....Im probably one of the smallest people in the band and I've never almost passed out and I was carrying a heavy arse drum....

True it was HOT as he!! but them uniforms should've been on...point blank

this is how i feel about it. whether folks want to admit it or not it has gotten weak. like me and JR was saying, i don't even recall heat being an issue. i have seen a few pass out, come out jackets when i marched, and they were the same ones shaming on the field at practice, and get at the performance and want to get crunk. i understand completely why Mr. J. did it, to keep the whinin to a minimum and the phone calls from the parents nonexistant. my thing is if you got a problem with (your child) performing/practicing in the heat, join the choir. it's a good thing i did change my major from Music Ed, cause if i had a band (and the goal back then was to be at the collegiate level) i'd probably be them folks worst nightmare. they woulda had full uni's headbands and gloves on, the whole game, fucc takin off jackets too. that's why i like Doc's style, he didn't allow any man, woman, or child change the flow of his program. nowadays(and i'm speaking from my experiences, but i know we aint alone), as soon as somebody momma call, here they go re adjusting shat.
