yeah.....them baby snakes had a laundry list of problems to deal with other than some uniforms. imo the "U" set fam up. we played after halftime....but i think they held back a lot, fam played the whole fourth quarter pretty much and it seemed like they thought that we were giving up i guess, and thought they were in control. and then the game ended......and i saw one of the worst ***** wippings ive ever seen between two powerhouse hbcu bands......and i loved every minute of it! but like i originally said, this isnt the same FAM i remember when i was in the band, because actually we left first......while they were playing, and you could tell like after their second song, they didnt want to play anymore. they knew they were getting flame broiled like some whoppers and gave up. when i was in the band, and we dared to leave like we did in 00.....them dudes stayed in mumford for almost what seemed like a lifetime after we left. they knew saturday that if they played another song while we were leaving that we probably woulda stopped in our tracks and came back in the stands....they didnt want that.:flamethro:no:

yall already know SU ripped em a new one from start to finish. halftime was a bit blah for me since i wasn't sitting high enough, and it was too hot to move, lol. they both had a good sound on the field though. dance routine for both were average.

5th, FAMU's song selection was uh mess. which made SU push their foot further up their ass.

Considering that this was the first game of the season, I thought that both bands did very well. Neither was perfect, but I think each did well in executing their programs standard of whats considered excellence....I say "their programs standard", because I witnessed two very different styles and techqniques which is always hard to compare. Although my preference leans toward the 100's style, it would be unfair for me to automatically discredit the Jukebox in anyway, because they didn't do what "I" thought they should've done and vice versa.

Southern
They had an extremely powerful sound that was consistent throughout the game that's definitely difficulty for anyone to try to top. They have always been one of my top three stands band and to date they still are--I love the energy. Nice sound on the field and exectued your show well, considering limited amount of time. Southern your fans seem alot like FAMU fans at times--hard to please...you have to do the impossible like walk on water at the half for them to clap...I think that's because they've seen so many great shows that they're always comparing the last one or the greatest one to the current one. Regardless of not wearing a non-traditional band uniform, you all still looked great. Can't wait to see you guys next year.

FAMU
They had a very balanced and powerful sound that will also be difficult for any band to top. I enjoyed the mix of tunes played in the stands from marches, top 40s, gospel, traditionals, etc. When I heard of the time alloted for the show, I figured that there would not be a traditional drill, but possibly a small picture formed on the field; espcially since I know the typical length of a FAMU show. Despite the fact that a drill wasn't done, they still sounded great, the concert selection was played to perfection and the superman formation and dance routine was hot also (love that soldier boy). You all looked great and I'm anxious to see what's offered later in the season.

Overall, I enjoyed both bands and I don't think any other band would've been able to compete with either Saturday. It's ashame that people are too busy looking for the flaws(which were not many for either band) and trying to hand out L's to realize that although we saw two different styles, we still witnessed 2 great bands in action.


Good Luck to the Hundred and Jukebox on the season.
 
As somewhat of an oldhead, and not one of Mr. J's biggest supporters. I was dissappointed not to see the unis. I thoght that they might go and change before halftime like they did againt PV last year, and when they didn't I was pissed. I remember my days in the Juke when we went to the Plantation.....or Reservation (whatever the hell it was supposed to be), Leon Spinks Stadium in Lorman, and sat in that heat with full unis on and the only relief you got was to put that cape over your head. But in defense of the Jukebox, I realized myself how hot it was when I noticed at the start of the second half, I wasn't sweating anymoreTand not because it wasn't hot). I had to drink tap water to bring my temp down and replace fluids.
So in defense of Mr. J. the right thing was done. Because we rather be on here arguing this point than mourning the loss of one of our own who had an unknown pre-existing condition that could have led to a tragedy. Mr J. would have had to deal with that, not us.
Doc Greggs on the other hand would not have given anyone permission to become sick; and that was it! If you got sick you hoped you would die because you knew your ass was zipped when you returned to the B.R..... reason, to damn soft!

The only liquid that we were ever given at a game was the bottles of Crown and cups of beer that were passed covertly to us by the old Jukes sitting in the section directly behind or next to the Jukebox.

And it was the first game of my 4th year in band and it happened at Legion Field. :smh: :lol: But it was my fault because I didn't eat anything all day and I didn't drink enough fluids.

Anyway, I'm with the majority- SU did a good job, but I was not feeling the shorts and tees. :smh: But like Blade said, I guess I'll just come to the realization that this is a different generation- dey don't make em like dey use to.

And FAMU, what's up with majority of band members lookin like a bunch of Rastafarians? :xeye: Dayum, the dreds I SOMEWHAT understand, but shave all dat facial hair off!! :smh: Lookin like taco meat. :lol:

Well I was at the game and I agree that it was hot as hell.........but I am old school and we practiced in heat like that everyday in Baton Rouge. But again the old school kids were used to heat. We aint like the new school with all the internet, video games etc.........in other word soft mofos. LOL. We were hard as hell back in the day. The 80s was just a different era. Our parents were even hard and expected us to be. Mr. J and SU would have been in a tough situation if one of them kids passed out and died from the heat. You know how folks like to sue. Legal situations are different now. Back then our parents wouldn't have said that. But anyway, I would have had them wear the uniforms marching and immediately told them to take off the tops once we got in the stands. That is just me. So I didn't like the practice uni's either. But Doc has let the "S" perform in practice unis before at home openers in the early 90s and since then. But that never happened under him with us. I do doubt Doc would have let them wear those practice uni's for a televised event. Doc is too arrogant for that. Especially against FAMU.

Now in saying all that. SU destroyed FAMU's band in every way. Even that Music Soulchild ballad was garbage. Sounding nothing like old school FAMU. If you ever seen them back in the day, you would understand how bad they really were this past weekend. That was the worse time I ever seen them perform. Halftime was so-so by both bands if you ask me. I particularly don't like the gimmicks we used and FAMU was boring and over dance as usual during their show.
Most of us Jukes and ex Jukes have seen them more than the rest of the SWAC schools so we are experts on FAMU. LOL. So believe me when I tell you that this 07 version that played on Saturday was absolutely not on point.
No swagger about them at all. Just listliss. I have been saying for years that BCC has passed them by. When we went agains them last year in Jville, they sounded good. They are a much better band than FAMU now.

1st Sgt, first of all, it was good to meet you Saturday. Second, I have to agree with you. It was an executive decision made by SU's staff, and I support it. FAMU was on the shaded side of the stadium for the entire day. They felt the heat too, but I don't think they felt it to the degree that we were feeling it on SU's side.

I talked to my son, who is in the band, and asked him his opinion about the matter.
He repied...."IT WAS HOT!" and he was glad they did not do the uniforms.

If I can coin a phrase from Vinita, IDGAF(lip) about what other bands do; I am a Juke through and through. The bottom line is Mr. J had a damned if he do and damned if he don't situation. I don't know about any white, red, green or other color band, from this that or any other state, and I don't care what they do. Caution against heatstroke is not an excuse; it is a reality.

Have you seen the grass in the office parks lately? They are still watering it, it has just been hot as hades and the grass cannot handle it. The bottom line it, IT IS (was) HOT!

Now, from a parental perspective, if my child would have been exposed to the heat, in the wool uniforms that the Juke wears, with a cape, and a coat and overlay, with boots, and had fallen out, I would have had a legitimate gripe. So given the two choices, shorts or health hazard, I think I would go with the shorts.

As for shorts being an embarrasment, I would not say that at all. What IS embarrasing is to not be UNIFORM, and SU, was indeed, UNIFORM. The only thing that takes away from a show or appearance is a piss poor show and piss poor appearance.

Hey Frat, I taught my sons when they were growing up that, when you are right, don't argue with anyone else about it. Nothing that Jayrob or anyone else says will make me sway from my stance and belief. I don't think he has ever marched in a band. Also, I looked at the video that you posted, and to answer your question, there was nothing on there at all, that looked tacky.

Mr. J did what HE thought was right, and his is the only vote that matters. Everyone else can move forward and let it go.....it is done.

I can raise my hand right beside yours, and say that the kid who did it DID eat, AND had plenty of fluids, and was called a pansy by his BD, right before he passed out and didn't wake up ever again.

His BD plenty of dayumed mea culpas for my cousin's best friend and his wife at that funeral, though. :rolleyes:

Some of them mofos had ashy knees, though. I was kinda pissed at that. ;)

Hell, if they had WORN uniforms, and one of 'em had fallen out in that baking assed sun, you'd have mofos on here pointing one finger at SU, forgetting about the rest they'd be pointing at themselves. :rolleyes:

Trying to be one of the few on this board (or the MEAC board for that matter) who tries to look at the positives and negatives from both bands rather then just to prop up their band and down the other?

SU's Pros

1. Love how they cheer on their defense and play their fight song when the team does well.
2. Loved most of the song selections. SU's great at selecting the pop songs that are hot for the stands.
3. Nice drill (though the ESPN was predicted by half the people around me ? you are a SWAC band after all)
4. Lines were very good in halftime show.

SU's Cons

1. Marching in P.E. clothes was a horrible idea. I don't care if it was a day game on September first (actually it was not as hot as the norm).
2. I know you've been putting your horns on the ground for ages but it's still ass backwards.
3. For God's sake please stop the minstrel show. As a black person I find it offensive that you always turn to that for your dance routine. Ten minuets before halftime I remarked to a guy that yall were going to play Cold Hearted Snake, and either have a fat woman, fat man, or a white guy come out and do the buffoon. I was wrong about the Cold Hearted Snake but unfortunately right about the buffoon part. PLEASE STOP THIS. I thought all SU people liked this but I was pleasantly surprised to talk with some SU folks after the game was also don?t like it.
4. Your sound SUcks to high hell. Everything was loud over blowing half and whole notes. I knew that and I?ve never taken a music class in my life. But I know great music when I hear it. I get that you're a brass band. I'm not knocking that. But you can be a brass band and still be in tune and play music with a recognizable melody inside. I've seen it done many times before so don't say it isn't possible. If loud was a sport you'd do well but it's not.
5. I never thought I'd say this but the Dolls were garbage. First I'm use to seeing 5 - 7 of them and them being the very best dancing high-yella skeleton-skinny women on the planet but these 12 girls were thicker then the norm (not Jackson St. thick though) and it slowed down the normal very fast-paced non-stop clean dance moves I'm use to. The girl who was front center just right of the 50 was especially off. Again, the Dolls were always the one constant I was use to getting from you but even they let me down. They though, can be fixed by dropping the dead weight that?s keeping them from being what we?re use to ? the best dance line bar none. You could easily drop 5 and take the best 7 and still have a great season. Yall stopped weighing?

Verdict: SU's still aways from their swagger of the 90's/early 2000's. JSU still has the best overall band in the SWAC. Gap may be widening for them in fact.

Marching 100?s Pro?s

1. Best overall I?ve seen the hundred on a first game of the season. Makes me feel real good about the future.
2. Getting better in the stands (though not were I want them)
3. J. Holiday?s Bed was HOT and current! Do more of it.
4. didn?t let up the whole game.
5. The sound was amazing!!!
6. You did a 7 min show in 7 min!:lmao:
7. Although doing great short shows isn?t the 100?s forte they still had a much better overall show then SU though this wasn?t difficult. That same show could have been an L against a better field show band ? remember that (but was still more then enough for this particular SU band).

Marching 100?s Con?s

1. Enough with the fanfares already.
2. need more current pop tunes FOR THE STANDS
3. needs to cheer on the team.
4. Need to play Rattler Orange and Green more often.

Verdict: Still unquestionably the best overall marching band in the nation. The combination of the sound quality, marching, music collection, and showmanship confirm that. Still room for improvement though (namely in areas of stand music collection and choice of use) but future looks promising for that [improvement] to come to fruition.

Before the game I thought I?d see things go this way.

Stands: SU
Halftime: FAMU
5th: SU but close

What I saw though was

Stands: Push (If I had to give an edge I?d give it to SU but within the margin of error)
Halftime: FAMU by a bigger margin then I expected

even though i didn't march in the 80s, i agree wholeheartedly. ya gull marched 4 good ones during 98-01 in full uni, in 90+ Huntsville, B'ham, Montgomery, Mobile, ATL, Baton Rouge, Jackson, Tuskegee weather with asthma, hay fever, and bit of drunkness, and never passed out nor had to come out the uni not one time. and to take a bit further, we didn't even get water afterwards. well until i became an upperclassmen and i made the crabs bring it. i guess standing at attention with the sun beating down on ya ass in mid august and september at 3:45 waiting for 4:15 practice to start really pays off. so again, i agree. i'm sure if i sat my ass in the house playin xbox and on the internet and went on to college, i'd be batchin bout being out in the heat too(which is what this all goes back to, so i really don't blame Mr. J, it's these whinin crabs and their parents that he is tryna stay clear of, which i understand). practice in heat, makes perfect in heat. but again, dis aint ole skool.
 
If you did all that, Crys, in those conditions, you were extremely fortunate. My Daddy did that isht, too. So did Corey.

My boy, though ... the three of us ... we might be fighting behind that isht ...

Don't get me wrong I am understand why Mr. Jackson did it and I support the Jukebox no matter what. Times done change and it is a different vibe out there. But I agree with ya too. I just don't remember heat being an issue back in the day. Hell, Doc didn't even let the band get anything to drink during the game back then, But I guess he was wrong in treating us kids like that. The funny thing is I remember my parents telling me that at 18 I was a grown arse man and make my choices accordingly. LOL. I guess they were some bad parents then.

:lol: well i guess Wesley was a bad director, and my mommy was a bad parent also. cause i KNOW, if i had called home one time talkin bout, "it's too hot out here, we practice in the sun...i wouldda got the dial tone. :lol: i honestly don't recall heat being an issue as well, we knew it was hot, but we also knew what we were there for so we sucked it up and kept it moving cause our hearts were in it. i know our band doesn't even practice on the field at 4:15 anymore, they're in the bandroom, and out on the field at 7. man i wish! we was on the field at 4 and 7, and then on to the bandroom. but as you stated, times have sho changed.

yeah, i really didn't have a choice. it was get wit it or get gone. and i will not front like it was a cake walk, cause it was HOT and i kept my inhaler on standby in the jacket pocket! :lol: especially Homecoming and Classic when you got the parade and the game! but you know you do what you have to. plus, like i was tellin JR, our hearts were in it, so it was a lot more momentum and just ready to be out there even with those hot ass unis on.
