Is Winning Everything?

by Reginald Stuart , June 6, 2012

A student’s performance on the basketball court undeniably brings money into the coffers of many schools. At the same time, too many of the athletes, particularly Black student-athletes, are underperforming academically and are at risk of losing their NCAA eligibility and, more important, failing in college overall.

When the University of Kentucky Wildcats won the NCCA Division I Basketball Championship this spring, the victory did more than put another big trophy in the showcase of the venerable intercollegiate sports powerhouse. It helped ensure the financial outlook for what has become a phenomenal, and oft-times controversial, money-making machine for all involved.

Days after the final buzzer of the NCAA championship game went silent, the entire Wildcats starting lineup—three freshmen and two sophomores—said they were entering the June draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). So did senior Darius Miller.

In 2010, freshman John Wall left Kentucky after one season and went on to sign a three-year deal with the Washington Wizards worth $16.59 million. When asked if he thought Wall would return for his sophomore season, Wildcats Coach Calipari said, “He better not be.”

…..

While Kentucky touts that it has “consistently posted strong numbers” in the

NCAA’s APR program, that achievement is helped by the NCAA rule that excludes student-athletes who leave before graduation to go professional from being counted as dropouts for the purposes of assessing the NCAA’s other important yardstick—graduation rates. The most recent assessment by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport of NCAA data on Division I graduation rates showed that, for the 2006 through 2010 student cohort, Kentucky graduated only 60 percent of its African-American student athletes, compared to 100 percent of its non-minority, or White, student-athletes.

As for student-athletes leaving, nine Kentucky basketball players have been drafted by NBA teams in the past two years.

“If a student jumps after one year in bad academic standing, then he counts against the school’s APR and GSR rates,” said Dr. Richard Lapchick, chair of the DeVos Sport Business Management Program at the University of Central Florida and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport.

David Ridpath, assistant professor of sports administration at Ohio University and a leader in The Drake Group, also voices caution about the APR standards, calling them “manufactured.”

Ridpath, whose group has been pushing the NCAA to adopt clearer steps for measuring academic performance and also better financial reporting for academic departments, calls the APR a moving target.

“Whether they are seriously educating these students is up for debate,” Ridpath says. “Whether you come to school for one day or four years, as long as they are in college they need to be students.” D

you shoot for SWAC Titles, we shoot for All-Amercians and nationals...SWAC Title in track is one title that is strictly for the website only

That dude sings the same song every year. He doesn't know what everyone else has and still sings it.:emlaugh:

:lmao::lmao:

I ain't mad at'chall @ all JState. Gitchalls shine on.

Prairie View mens indoor track & field.
Prairie View mens outdoor track & field.
Prairie View mens football.

All 3 put on public notice and must lessen their weekly practice times.

Make fun of that, right here------------>

P88 offers ZERO excuses. It's Prairie View's problem to fix. Not the SWAC. Maybe I need to find me a remedial-type knee---grow so I can learn, for once :emlaugh:, how to offer up excuses that make zero logical sense. :emlaugh:  :lmao:

I don't believe anyone in the SWAC has room to gloat about anything concerning the APR. In a few years, the minimum requirement will be raised to 930. It seems to me that everybody needs to working hard to get your programs in order because many of the programs that are in the clear now barely made it over the 900 threshold. All of the schools still have a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I know we are all rivals when we play one another but we all are still family and none of us should be proud or happy when something bad happens to any of all schools. Yea we talk smack and crack jokes all the time but at the same time its all in fun. JSU & SU, way to go getting back on track and hope u stay that way. TXSU, ALAST, MVSU, & PB yal can do it too.

-singing- I'm sooooooo glad, that those sorry ass schools got banned!
I'm sooooo glad, that those sorry ass schools got banned!
I'm soo gggllllaadddd, that those sorry ass schools got banned!!!! Singing glory hallaleuh. Wooooo!!!! Those sorry ass schools got banned!

Looks like its a new bunch of dumb ass thugs in the SWAC
Look at those pathetic scores. Folks claiming "Academic" titles & can't even... Nevermind lmao.

**** that...they voted against us. I need all of those dummies to get banned.
Now watch what happens at the next meeting. I assure you they will repeal the SCG ban.

This is the same NCAA sanction JSU faced last year right?

I can't believe for the first time JSU isn't on the list

These kids have to take some pride in their education and playing whatever sport they're playing. I really hope all of our schools that are in APR trouble right now come up on top and stay there and we all stay away from this APR situation. Instead of helping ourselves, we hurting ourselves by simple not going to class.

Why would some of these kids have any pride in going to class when they weren't doing that in high school? When you cater and baby a jock to the point that he expects a school to take care of him-you get stuff like this.

He runs into coaches, nerds and other folks at those school that don't play that mess. Don't think the schools don't know who those boys are that don't go to class. Those kids will pay in some way or form (like get passed over for job here or there, no alum help and so on).

You want kids to go to class and care about an education-you go after the high schools and school districts that produce them. If most of these failures are coming from the same school district-the conference as a whole needs to inform the school district- "we will no longer recruit your kids nor accept any student from your school district (or the offending school)."

You do that and you are playing with a district's funding as parents will yank their kid out that school (or district) ASAP.

Because hiring academic counselors and so on won't solve the mess that started off at HOME. I promise you some of those PWC are LOOKING at who are the ones causing this, their backgrounds and schools and make sure they don't repeat those mistakes.

You shole is right BB you shole is right. You been asking fir those scores a long time. And now its really coming to pass.

I see why that basketball coach is trying to leave PineBluff now.

Yeah BB ...these thugs need to learn how to attend class. PineBluff and Valley need to stop playing so much basketball and get in the classroom. The kids are suppose to be getting an education not just going to school. The dumb students that go to these schools need to get their priorities in order. This is a shame.

Valley won the SWAC cause they spent too much time on the court and not in the classroom ...that SeanWoods is that young coach that helped MVSU to the ultimate title.

But Cleb.

I could understand your point of view if your school wasn't the worst APR school in the country but turned around and voted for MightyJSU to be banned from the SCG. Isn't that the epitome if hypocrisy? Maybe if you guys had volunteered on a self imposed post season ban I could understand it better. You guys are getting exactly what you deserve.

Y'all remind me if the folks in Wisconsin who voted against their own best interest for governor and now they are surprised that he is doing exactly what he said he was going to do. You guys really should not only face sanctions but you should probably be kicked out of the NCAA. Its looking like that's the way you are going with that bad AD.

Good luck in the future...sorta

It has happened AGAIN... lol. Y'all kill me... Now we want a kumbaya meeting... "This hurts all of us" etc etc... But it was a joke last year. lolol. Comedy.

All of the "VALID" points being raised today, were raised by JSU last year. The APR issue is/was not a LYNCH STREET problem. It is a HBCU problem. Every HBCU is a target for this APR monster and we all will be touched eventually.... (but we said that last year.... when it was a joke). To that end. You're getting what you deserve. Those "dummies" need to go to class. Isn't it just that simple? lol
