Tigers shock defending NCAA champion Rice

David came gunning for Goliath on Friday afternoon, only this time he was slinging baseballs, not stones. And make no mistake, Friday's NCAA regional game between playoff first-timer Texas Southern and Rice, the defending national champion, was truly a David-and-Goliath affair. And it had the same outcome.

The Tigers, sparked by a late three-run homer from Herman Coachmen and a valiant pitching effort from Issac Daniels, shocked the heavily favored Rice Owls 4-3 at Reckling Park in one of the biggest upsets in NCAA baseball tournament history.

As they came off the field, the Tigers were serenaded with chants of "TSU! TSU! TSU!" from the home fans scattered among the 3,178 in the stands.

"Yeah, this is the biggest win in school history," said a beaming Daniels, who pitched seven innings to pick up the win. "This is one I'm never going to forget, mostly because I don't think my family will ever let me forget about it."

And the Tigers had to earn what is easily the biggest win in school — and SWAC — history, overcoming obstacles imposed by man and nature.
 
Mad props to TSU!!!! Hey, no need for the patronizing from the A&M fans... beat their @$$ too.

That is an impressive win over Rice. I remember watching the CWS in Omaha last year, and those Owl pitchers are a beast. Their stuff was at least AAA level last year.

I agree. Do the same thing to them Aggies. Let's hope the pitching holds up.

And I heard on the radio that Rice has 4 of the top 10 pitchers in college baseball this year. Said 3 of them will probably go in the first round of the next baseball draft. TSU beat an excellent ball club. I'm about to shed a tear.

Way to go, TSU!!! Don't stop here. Keep it going all the way to Omaha.

Congrats Texas Southern University... Making us all proud. Great Victory... Now go and pull a Valley and win another. Keep it going. You know you will not face any pitching better that what you faced that game. Was 6'9 pitcher the starter? Like GSUper and Robber said, I saw them last year and they were killing everyone.

i had a GREAT time witnessing a special moment that i was honored and privileged to witness (as Jafus said, Rice's "long, slow, painful death")

what is going to be even better will be the growing number of fans that say "I WUZ DERE" in the years to come

all night long, and all morning long i have had the wonderful cadence of ...

interesting to note when one talks about RU's high-powered staff that last night's starter for RU was, what?, 13-2 with an ERA of 1.80 which is great at any level but almost unreal in the college world of pingy aluminum bats

TxSU's starter had an ERA of 4.45

also, both of TxSU's top starters are young guys that only recently became pitchers

Tiger Coach Candy was bragging on those two young men to me last week and, after last night, i cant blame him

one more interesting note:

two of Rice's three runs came on TxSU errors - so that means that the bats of the defending national champions were held to only one earned run at home in the playoffs

Congratulations to the TSU Tigers. I kept up with the play-by-play on the internet, and through the storms, through the rain they kept the focus and won against one of the best in the Nation! Great win for TSU and great showing for SWAC. Also, great interviews with much humility and class for the players and coaching staff. :D :tup: :jump:
 
last week, when the seedings and pairings were announced, i was at TxSU and i had a chance to speak with Coach Candy

he seemed pretty darned relaxed

i'm not saying it was confidence as much as it was, "we're going to try our best and what happens happens" (it reminds of me of Miami's Larry Coker is before games)

four p.m. is game time - there is only one way in and one way out of that stadium folks ... get there with time to spare (and EAT first 'cause we dont know how long it will take to play THIS game)

That is big time. I was wondering how many of the runs were earned. I hope TSU is more fundamenatlly sound. Those errors are a killer in the playoffs.

another interesting note goes back earlier in the season:

as many of you may remember, there was a LOT of excitement about Prairie View's baseball team and its chances to unseat perennial SWAC diamond king Southern

While most of us were talking about PV and SU, TxSU got off to a horrible start

so, when the Tigers drove up the road to play a series at PV, most folks expected a long weekend for TxSU

many folks, including myself, Fiyah, Jafus, band fan, et al were rather shocked at how the Tigers came up in there and stole the show to the tune of grand larceny

who would've thunk it then?

As bad as everyone on the Rice Owl side feels, it is over, and there
is nothing anyone can do about it. The planets were perfectly lined up for the TSU Tigers.

I can remember when I was an assistant baseball coach at the Univ. of Houston, in the late seventies, a handsome black man who always wore a Boston Red Sox cap at our games. It was Candy Robinson. He loved the great game of baseball, amd last night, he enjoyed another 'shining moment' to go along with his SWAC Conference Tournament Title of 2004.

Alois Blackwell, the Texas Southern University Athletic Director, was
a great running back for the 1977 Cotton Bowl Champion Houston Cougar football
team when I was the Recruiting Coordinator. I hugged him last night and I also hugged Candy Robinson. I also gave my two unused tickets for 'Game 1' of this
Regional Tournament to the parents of the TSU young man who hit the three run homer. You have to salute their accomplishment. These people are good people and they work hard too.

Now it's time to circle the wagons---In alot of ways, there was a ton
of pressure on the Owls last night---now they are wounded and backed in a corner...I just have a feeling that 'putting the nickels on their eyes' might
be a very tough chore for the other teams in this tournament!!! Go 2004 Owls!!!

*i must say that the Rice fans and even the A&M fans i ran into last night were a LOT better than what i am used to at Florida State

Their 1st playoff win is agnst. the
defending NCAA champs, and on their field.

This is why they play the game!!! Baseball is
a sport where the underdog can win on any day.
I hope the SWAC office sees this and re-evaluates
their position in baseball. We should work to put
more teams in the playoffs.

Congrats to TSU again. Now go out and beat dem
Aggies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those big schools are not
use to offspeed pitching. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!
