Congratulations Tex. So., You guys have just defeated the 2003 National Baseball Champions ... Rice University. You have no idea what you have just done. This has to go down as probably the biggest baseball upset in SWAC History. We are all PROUD of you this day......

Texas Southern stuns Rice in regional opener

Herman Coachmen hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning that allowed Texas Southern to defeat defending national champion Rice 4-3 in the opening game of the NCAA regional tournament at Reckling Park.

Rice starter Phil Humber coasted through the first 7 1-3 innings, striking out 11 and allowing only one earned run while the Owls held a 3-1 lead.

Texas Southern's eighth inning rally began with a base on balls to Andre Nevels. Mario Deleon then lined what was ruled an infield single off the glove of Owls' first baseman Matt Euckert. Coachmen then hit his homer.

The Owls tried to regroup in the bottom of the eighth inning when Josh Rodriguez led off with a single and was moved to third by a sacrifce bunt and a fly-out to left field, but Texas Southern's Corey Alexander ended the inning with a diving catch over the bullpen fence in foul territory. ........

Just made it back from Reckling!!!!

This was simply an a-m-a-z-i-n-g game!!!

All game long, the storm/lightning meter was reading 2........3.........2.......3..........2 the entire game but when we hit the three run homer, the storm meter immediately jumps to 9. Game put on hold. :rolleyes:

If you all could have seen all the love from the Texas A&M and Lamar fans. Let me repeat myself TEXAS A&M!!! Aggies showing love to a HBCU!!! Are you kidding me??? Basically, they wanted Rice to go into the losers bracket.

What really made me proud was our team did not take this win and rub it into the face of Rice. They celebrated for a very, very short period and then showed class to the Rice players with hand shakes.

THIS WAS FOR THE SWAC!!!!!
 
Oh yeah....

We left so many runners stranded. We had the bases loaded with no outs but managed to do nothing with it.

Rice's starting pitcher is a projected top 10 draft pick next week and their #2 and #3 pitchers are top picks too.
 
Dang man I'm sorry I missed this game.

This game will live with the TSU players for the rest of their lives.

Huge win for Texas Southern University and the SWAC.

I am glad, I had the opportunity to witness this game. It was well worth fighting the traffic, heat, lightening, and rain.

It is always fun watching games with many of the Texas Southern University fan faithful. They are very spirited and proud group, but they are always very gracious, as well. As much as the players and coaches deserve this win, they deserve to celebrate, as well. I hope the SWAC Texas Baseball Rivalry continues to grow. Because this will also be could for the two teams and the conference. Boy, the SWAC Western Division in baseball is a beast.

Congratulations!!

Continue to fight during the rest of the tournament.

I enjoyed the game....I sat in the press box and they do it up in there...you got Chipotle Burritos, Texadelphia Cheesestakes, all you can drink beverages....oh...about the game

The media in the box thought it was going to be a blowout but when the game came tight, I noticed several media members shifting the other way towards the TSU side. The staff from Rice was damn near speechless.

In the press conference after the game, Graham didn't say much....the TSU players were pretty modest also...
 
TSU will play at 3 or so tomorrow but I am curious about their pitching selection....they threw their top 2 starters and now they are on the 3rd guy who is pretty shaky. The 3rd guy will have to pitch like he did against Valley in the final game if he has to have a shot at the win. PLus, they need to get production from Fugett, he struck out 4 times. Coachman is carrying the load along with Garcia.

If our bats are clicking along with the pitching, we can;t be stopped as HBCUs....these teams are some of the slowest teams in the world....Rice's players run a legitimate 6.9 on the basepaths...that play Alexander made in the stands would not have been done by a Rice outfielder...speed kills.

Where can you get tickets from?

Right now it looks like they will be playing Texas A&M, they are leading Lamar 6-0 but the game is not official and is now suspended because of rain. This may be to TSU's advantage if TAMU/Lamar have to finish their game in the morning. TSU should be rested while all the other teams would have played before them.
 
WOW, I didn’t get there until the lightning delay in the eight inning, but what a game. To survive not one but two lightning delays, this was a very big win for the SWAC and Texas Southern. TSU changed pitchers after the first delay, but stayed with the relief pitcher after the second delay.

That's what i'm talking about let's play'em and beat'em.
 
you can get them at the window of the stadium, they're reasonable

it was a who's who in TSU alumni coming out....President Slade showed up for 2 innings, I saw tons of football fans who never came to McGregor, I saw a high school classmate for the first time in years, I saw 2 KTSU reporters, etc...
 
From reading the Rice message board (www.owlzone.com) the Lamar vs A&M game was postoned 'til 10:00 am while the Rice game (loser's bracket) has been pushed back to 12:30 pm. This should push our originally 3 pm game back.
 
good...get to sleep late and eat a good meal....I hope TSU won't lose so we can chill until Sunday..after the 4 p.m. game, there's another game.
 
They tried like "L" to steal this one. That first delay was unnecessary. But anyway, we won. :jump:
