Thoughts of Superbowl week in Houston

The columnist did mention the parties in his article. I think his emphasis was on the attraction of Houston as a city what it had to offer, not the festivities revolving arounf the Superbowl.

Exactly, there may be lots of parties going on, but Houston is STILL a BORING CITY anyway you cut it.

Houston, we have a problem: boredom

January 29, 2004

BY JAY MARIOTTI SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

HOUSTON -- This is what happens when taxpayers build a stadium in an Enron town gone bust, leading to the NFL wedging in a Super Bowl among the armadillos and strip malls, resulting in a championship game between franchises that represent regions instead of cities and reflect the colorless personalities of their coaches.

We're dying down here, drowning in silliness with Billy Bobs and media boobs.

"Somebody asked me where's the craziest place I ever made whoopee with my wife,'' said Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, referring to some freak-show reporter from Jay Leno's TV show. "I just thought that was a bad question. Very disrespectful. I just looked at him and said, 'Why would you ask me some question like that?' You try to be respectful of the guy, knowing he's probably not in his right mind.''

(blah, blah, blah,,, so on and so forth,,,)

Yes, yes Houston, Jay, we totally agree. dispicablely boring superbowl and a complete waste of taxpayer dollars in houston just to have a superbowl and your town the center of attention for two weeks and every news outlet in the world focused on your town for 4 hours today. We feel your pain. In fact, we would like to assist you in any way possible, especially by volunteering to host all the dispicably boring events that will be held at Reliant from now own as you see fit because this is a great burden on the city of Houston and we totally understand and would like to help. And the SWAC natives wanna move the SWAC Championship to Houston??? please.

sincerely, Birmingham Alabama

But enough of my comic relief. My economic development side over-rules, so i must weigh in from that perspective. Jay Marioti is a blithering idiot. thank god, for the city of houston, this socialist boob/ANARCHIST has nothing to do with economic development and city government decision making in Houston this moron. You had the same type of scavenging worthless maggot media(and political and social activist) BAPHOONS in Atlanta naysaying and opposing Atlanta's ambitious decisions in the 60s, 70s and 80s that has lead to Atlanta's prosperity and economic development success. it's just a cultural phenominon in the U.S.; we pride ourselves on being "underdogs" and going against anything that is a phenominal success, big, corporate, etc. It's the best way to gain attention to a cause,, or sell papers/make news/make a name for yourself. No matter what cities do they will get criticized. If houston didn't have the superbowl, this moron would be criticizing some other city for some other nit-pick reason. all the "boring" claims are totally subjective opinions and don't mean a hill of beans to most people there who are having a great time,, not to mention the economy of Houston that's "BORED" all the way to the bank,, i mean,, give me a break.

All it's done now is enough for me to stop flipping channels and watch to see who ends up on top. There just isn't any excitement there in this game, even the broadcasting is boring.

......

I guess Jay Mariotti eating a little something right now. I wonder where, how or if some sport's writers have any sense.

Word out is that Houston has worked itself into the Superbowl rotation and should be back by 2010. At any rate, as a sports fan, I have had one of the best sports entertainment weeks of my life. Houston went all out to host a great Superbowl event, and I believe that most that participated will look forward to the next one. I don't want to be negative, but I would find it hard to get excited about a Superbowl week of activites in January in Detroit.

If they can have a Super Bowl in Jacksonville, Detorit should not be a big deal. Both places are questionable. But even if you include weather as a factor, there is still more to do in Detroit than it is in J'ville. D-Town got women but you really have to be on top of your game to pull them.

Best ratings for the Game in Six Years

Superbowl Ratings

CBS: Super Bowl Highest Rated in 6 Years
Mon February 2, 2004 12:10 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sunday night's Super Bowl, noted as much for a slip of flesh by singer Janet Jackson as for a close win by the New England Patriots over the Carolina Panthers, was the highest rated in six years, CBS said on Monday.
Citing preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research, the network said the championship football game drew a 44.2 household rating, which represents the percentage of homes that own television sets. That was up 1 percent over 2003 and the best since 1998.

The game's share, or percentage of television sets that were actually in use and tuned into the game, was a 63. Average total viewership figures for the game were not yet available as of mid-morning Monday.

The Super Bowl is traditionally one of television's top events; 10 of the 20 most-watched TV broadcasts of all time, according to Nielsen, were Super Bowls.

Best Super Bowls that I have ever seen were:

1988 Super Bowl XXIII: San Fran vs. Cincy: 20 -16
1990 Super Bowl XXV: Buffalo vs. New York: 20-19
1999 Super Bowl XXXIV: St. Louis vs. Tennessee: 23-16

This one has to be up there. Both team showed that not only they can play defense last night.

Houston proved alot of people wrong

 Alot of people on here and in the media really talked down on Houston about it's image and lack of entertainment before the Super Bowl. With the teams in the Super Bowl and the host city, most doubters said this super bowl was going to be possibly the worst one ever. GUESS WHAT, HOUSTON PROVED ALL OF YOU WRONG.

1. Not only did the game have the highest TV ratings in 6 years,

2. Most of the guest who came in town HAD NOTHING BUT PRAISE FOR THE CITY and REALLY ENJOYED IT.

3. Not to mention on saturday more than 150,000 people crammed into the streets of downtown in a Mardi Gras type setting.

4. Just about every possible celebrity you could think of was in town and they all had good things to say about Houston.

5. Rumors are that the Super Bowl will be returning in 2010.

All in all, Houston proved it can host major events INCLUDING THE SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. I'm not an advocate for it to be here every year but it should come on a rotating basis.

I don't understand why people think Houston is a boring city. I was in L.A. for 3 months in 2002 and I think Houston has it beat by far for ginuine entertainment...except for the beaches. But who would go to the Beach on Super Bowl week?

Houston p-hating?,,, bah.

um-hm,,, yep,,, like we said,,, Houston, PLEASE send us all your Reliant stadium bookings, as we will be needing them once our domed facility is open for business and we make a run at Superbowl 43 or 44, the republican or democratic national convention, the southern baptist convention, the NCAA final 4, and other miscel. like the world convention of Cancer research, the meeting of the western hemisphere trade organization, the global Bio-medical summit, the genetic consortium meetings, the global conference on cloning technology, the world child care medical convention, Olympic game qualifiers, the international consortium on industrial artificial intelligence automation, the world Bass Pro Shop convention,, the list just goes on and on.

Sincerely, Birmingham Alabama.

yeah,,

And pundits say parity is bad? The league is watered down? Bah. Free agency is great. The NFL has their game fine tuned to a T. This coming from a Cowboy fan, so I of all people should be railing against parity in favor of the old dynasty days.

What's the big deal about that? They always do no matter if it's held in utah.
