Tennessee State leaving the OVC, Coming To SWAC?

Are they a HBCU? I can't tell by their student population.

I never understood why people think this way... TSU is a BLACK school... I had more white folks in my classes at A&M than I did at TSU...

people forget that TSU has 2 campuses in one city... a main campus and a downtown campus (which use to be University of Nashville)... Downtown campus is open all day but the majority of classes are night classes... its basically like a commuter campus for people who work full time during the day. That is where you will see the white people. Other than that on main campus it is anything different from a HBCU. The merger of the two schools is what makes people think TSU is not a "Black" school.

Last weekend we had to be out of LP parking lot by 12:00pm, but the real tailgating is over by the campus on Jefferson St. As you know Tn St play several HBCUs and the fans have a great time with these schools. Now moving back to BCF is not a bad idea if what you are doing is not working. There is nothing wrong with doing what we like to do. I don't think the politicans will approve unless they receive a lot of pressure.

Thank you DAHILL, I'm a proud Alumus of TSU and yes our Downtown campus is mostly white, I can count on one hand how man white students were in my classes for undergrad, but grad school was a different story, there were a lot of white students commuting from outside of nashville, teachers mostly because Metro SChools paid for it. TSU is true HBCU all the way, does it really matter anyway if white people go to TSU or not, I went there, doesn't matter to me, we seem to be getting more money anyway for diversifying which our campus is looking better than it did back in the day anyway.

No it doesn't matter, we just want you to be honest with yourselves and not be in denial that's all. As a matter of fact SU's Law Center has been that way for quite some time and has produce a number of judges both black and white that has sat on the bench for quite some years. But it didn't change the campus entire makeup.

BTW when y'all finally join the SWAC (if they let you this time) you're going to have to drop that TSU bit and go back to what black people originally called you. TNSU............OK?

what you do mean change the entire campus makeup? Have you ever been to Tennessee State? Like I said it is like any ordinary HBCU campus... the only difference is that it has two campuses in one city. Most of the white folks go to the downtown campus... Downtown campus consist of one huge building.. I think some of you all are just being ignorant now, making blanket comments without knowing any facts.

That was in reference to the main campus, not the location off of Charlotte. You see white folks in Nashville with TSU stickers on their cars. I met a girl from from Bartlett IL. who attended TSU on scholarship. Don't be in denial about the numbers.

I have never in my life seen a white person with a tsu sticker on their car. Every HBCU has white folks... but people on here are making it seem as if TSU is 30% white or something. There are white folks on scholarship at every SWAC school, so Im not sure what your point is. I stayed on campus my first year there... I can remember 2 white people in my dorm (and there were only 2 boy dorms on campus)

If I was AD at TnState, I would remain in the OVC cuz of geographical ties. IN football, I would try to arrange home/away series for two years with SU/GSU, then the next two years it would be Hampton/Howard, then after that Bethune/FAMU. Remember that they already have games against JSU in the SHC...don't know who this would impact A&M but they could perhaps work something similar with them and Bama State.

Man, that would allow them to remain in the OVC, and give them a yearly game in Louisiana, Bama, Florida, and the Va/DC area when the schedule calls for the teams mentioned. Just my 2cents.

I talked to a Tenn. State grad yesterday, ex-football player in the 90's, and told him that his school is considering leaving the OVC and joining the SWAC. His comment;

"They should."

Regards.

You may not see them coming up I-65, but I've seen them on I-24. Is there something wrong with going to school with white people or something.
The last time I was on their campus (main) during the day, you didn't have to look far for them. Even though they aren't close to the majority, they have a presence. The only problem that I have with TSU is that to be in an area with more than a million people, it still comes off like it's in a small town. Like they're isolated from the the rest of the area. They play at LP Field (I think) where the Titans play and people whine about it. I'm like, It's an NFL stadium, what's the problem? Folks look forward to September because that's the only time they get to travel and play other HBCU's. After that it's the CCC and homecoming. Football season is over with after that. Yaw know I ain't lyin'.

Ah MikeBi*** they have, neither *RAM or SU is interested (seriously) because they can't come up with enough money to get those games to over come the snub they give the conference years ago.

Most of the seasoned S.U. fans like bluedog and myself have been on Jefferson Street on numerous occassions. Southern has played them 35 times. :emlaugh:

Also, Southern has 5 campuses three campuses in BR, 1 in New Orleans and another in Shrevport.....

MikeB, you make a very interesting case, if TNState could pull that off they could have the best of all SWAC/OVC worlds. good point. in fact they are doing a great job of "integrating" in this new society/world of ours. to be an HBCU and go to a PWC conference,,, that's radical change, gotta give it to TNState on that and you for trying to point out alternatives. of coarse if many/most HBCUs followed the TNState blueprint what would become of HBCUs/HBCU conferences?? but then again,, perhaps the day of HBCUs/HBCU conferences are numbered as our society becomes more diverse and color blind. It's MLK's dream come to reality in the college football arena perhaps.

If they could have pulled that off they would have still been an independent and not in the predicament they're in now period.

I wouldnt care if you were there all 35 times, you aint been there more than me... the last time SU and TSU played in Nashville, TSU wasnt even in the OVC or a very early member. And if you see some white folks chillin on Jefferson Street, I will bring Lacumba back to life for you.

Wasnt braggin on TSU having 2 campuses, I know how many SU has... just letting you know the white people counted in TSU enrollment attend the downtown campus.

The fact of the matter is TNST views AAMU as azz wipe (and that is real). If it wasn't for S.U. (which runs the SWAC) you all would not even be playing in that game. You can lick TNST azz all you want, but know who your power broker is. BTW, it looks like the boys from the MEAC want play you all. We have a long history playing FAMU so don't look for us to use our muscle to get AAMU a MEAC game. There is a limit to the favors we will do for the smaller programs.

I don't see them as being in a predicament at all... The move from independent had more to do with other sports (travel) than it did with football. That and the "political" reasons that they joined the other Tn schools in a conference.

I would think that they would enjoy playing A&M because of the relative proximity. The game would probably take on even more "significance" if A&M also played against some of the other OVC teams that are close geographically (Jacksonville State and Samford). It would give TnSU and A&M some more common opponents and might add to the hype of their games.

Also didn't TnSU and A&M just sign a multi year deal to continue to play?

I don't know about that you'd had to ask somebody from AAMU. But what I do know is how they got to play AAMU in the first place is because SU turn their invitation to the JMC down.

Here's some thoughts on your other statement which may give you a better insight on how most TNSU fans feel.

BLUE TIGGA said:
i don't agree with that. I think SU and Grambling would come first as far as choosing who to play in the JMC. But i don't see a MEAC school being in front of AAMU. At the pep rally the had friday for the JMC, it felt like a rivalry was starting to grow. I would put AAMU third then maybe a NC A&T or S.C. State. I luv BCC's band but for attendance reason i don't know about BCC,Hampton or Howard.

I say Independent. For attendace purposes the SWAC is the obvious choice. Football wise i'd rather the meac cause they go to the playoffs. But i believe independent is the best fit. It might give us some scheduling problems though, especially if the NCAA votes to allow a 12 game regular season.

If we went independent...i'd like to play:

FAMU
JSU
SU
GSU
AAMU
Kentucky State
MTSU or Vandy
SCSU or NC A&T
TXSU
Hampton or Howard
Tenn. Tech or UT-Chatt
Samford/Eastern or Western Kentucky
