TSU leaving OVC?

Tennessee State has been in the Ohio Valley Conference for more than two decades, but during the next nine months or so school officials will take a hard look whether they should continue that relationship.

TSU athletics director Teresa Phillips said school president Dr. Melvin Johnson has asked that school officials study intercollegiate athletics at the school.

"They're going to study our conference affiliation and our stadium issue," Phillips said. "Should we try to build a stadium on our campus and make it 25,000-30,000 with sky boxes and move from LP Field and should we consider moving out of the OVC into the SWAC? We'll do that study over the next 6-to-9 months and that will tell us what direction we'll go in. We need to look at it and make a statement on which way we're going to go."

TSU alumni, Phillips says, have been vocal about the Tigers leaving the OVC.

"There's a lot of talk from a big contingent of our alums about the OVC because we still lose out on some things," Phillips said recently. "For instance, we're playing an OVC opponent for homecoming and we would like to have a traditional opponent for homecoming, but because the way the schedule is, in late October you can't get that because you're kind of forced into your conference schedule so things like that hurt us.

"From many other perspectives, we get to play four traditional opponents, we get to be in a conference whose RPI and some other things overall might be considered a greater opportunity. ... For football, it would be great if we could move to the SWAC. For other sports, it might be good to stay in the OVC because of geography and other ways it might be better."

HMMM...Interesting!! It would be kind of neat to have a team from Tennessee to add to the SWAC.

Exactly. But that would put some more Tigers in the conference.:bump:

BTW... Nashville's TSU coverage is horrible in the newspaper... They had HALF a page way in the middle of the sports section with one black and white picture...

I got home this morning... The Huntsville Times had 2 and a half pages... (FRONT PAGE) with large color pictures and about 6 plus different articles.. I now see why TSU folks complain.

There is a lot more sports to cover in Nashville man. It's the same here in the A. HBCU sports along with GA State Univ sports are afterthoughts because there is so much other stuff to cover.

The Huntsville Times sports section is 2 times larger than the Tennesseans sports section....we have a totally different sports section for SEC sports.

The Tennesean had 11 pages in the sports section..

Huntsville Times had 12 in the sports section and 10 in the SEC sports section.

The Tennessean didnt even have any coaches quotes.... It was written like an AP writer wrote it.

Now we need to talk Tuskegee into coming
Send Alcorn to the west
And we might generate some excitement

OK, here is the question that I have. What makes TSU think that the OVC will want them for any other sport without football? Or is football not that big of a deal for the OVC?

I noticed that too. It seems as if they want to use the SWAC for football, because they can't get no love in the OVC for the "Big Money" sport.

Will the SWAC want them just for football? They're not too good in anything else, and they'll make an already weak basketball conference weaker, but the potential for some big money games in football is there.

Maybe taking them just for football is not a bad idea.

NICE

Looks to me like she was weighing pros and cons...not necessarily saying she would want to be in 1 conference for football and 1 for all others.

TSU is in a hard posistion.... I agree with Phillips... SWAC football would be better for TSU (money wise), but OVC basketball would be better for TSU (money wise and attendence wise)... Nashville is the center of the OVC. Visiting teams (in basketball) bring a good amount of fans because Nashville is the central hub for alot of OVC alumni. SWAC fans aint traveling for basketball games (rarely) Plus OVC competition is much better in basketball. While I think the OVC is also a better football conference, OVC teams arent bringing any fans and TSU fans arent interested in OVC football. I honestly think if TSU was to come to the SWAC like right now, they would win the commisionars cup. Some of their teams look sorry on paper because they are gettin beat by those white schools, but they would still be the best in the SWAC... take for instance last year TSU beat us twice in volleyball, but got put out early in the OVC tournament (or didnt make the tournament one) TSU would have track locked up (they own the OVC in track) TSU would win softball (they came to Huntsville with an all white squad and kicked our ass the last 3 years)... and probably would challenge for golf and tennis title also.

Shaq was wearing a Superman shirt, but it was in Que Dawg colors. That's his frat, and he has the Superman emblam on just about everything he own's, even his body (tattoed on his arm).

NICE

Thanks for clearing it up because it looked like an SU shirt to me, but oh well.   If TN STATE comes to the SWAC who will we drop?

I disagree............TSU (or anyone else in that conference) would not consistently beat S.U. in baseball. TSU does not have a better women basketball or track program than S.U. I doubt that their men's basekball program is better. I don't know if they have a bowling program. The football championship would not be guaranteed. They do not have a better men's track program than S.U. The OVC is not a better conference than the SWAC in track & field. If you think that TSU would come to the SWAC and own the commissioner's cup, then you are not paying attention to ALL SPORTS. A better soccer program than anyone else in the SWAC would not cut it. :emlaugh: I doubt very seriously if they would get 1st place points in golf because over the years they have not been better than Jackson State. Historically, TNST does not have a better tennis program than S.U. If I had to guess, TNST all sports in the SWAC would be somewhere around the 3rd position.

This is great news. Hopefully, Tennessee State will make the move. It would be a great addition for the SWAC and about time. The SWAC needs to pursue this hard and then go strong after Tuskegee or maybe FAMU.

first of all TSU doesnt have a baseball program... but could easily start one. There baseball stadium is better than 90% of the SWACs... (Honestly dont know why they built it... but I guess they plan on adding baseball in the future)... it is a nice stadium equipped with lights... In track while their mens teams may not be on top.... there womens track team would dominate track.... The Tigerbelles are NO JOKE... they have track tradition and easily get some of the top Black atheltes off of the Tigerbelle and Wilma Rudolph name itself. 3rd.. TSU doesnt have a soccer program. I know in overall facilities... it wouldnt be close. TSU doesnt have one "ishtty" facility on campus. Volleyball has its own gym that looks better than most regular SWAC basketball gyms and seats around 4-5000. Basketball gym seats around 11,000. All TSU needs is an on campus football stadium.

Exactly, this is the same thing that cause the riff between them and the SWAC especially SU.

Phuff um if they can't come into the conference full fledged....phuff um. They didn't have any problem doing for the OVC, a conference that had no history with them at all.

These have to be some of the dumbest group of people on the planet. bluedog has been saying what Ms. Phillips said for three freaking years but certain tsu fans on this board and others didn't want to hear the truth.
