SWAC's Most Feared Stadiums

I believe Southern Unversity has the most cordial fanbase in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. I have observed through the years countless visitors receive directions and advice from SU alums and fans as it related to multiple issues. I have watched them bend over backwards to accommodate visiting fans in a variety of ways. I have seen the good will of the Jaguar Nation pour out like rivers of water. And the only reason I came fathom as to why some would seek to undermine their visit to Jaguarland is that Mumford is a facility that is home to a rabid fanbase where winning comes with great difficulty and scarcity by the visiting team. And it should be that way! It is a feared stadium for all who are inimical to its goals! Sure, you will from time to time encounter a rude fan here or there! Who doesn't? You might even encounter some hoodlums out for no good! That's just a fact of life in America's urban settings. But, by and large, a visit to Mumford, itself a beautiful and comfortable facility, is an exercise that any SWAC fan should cherish. Several years ago, I had the honor and privilege to serve as S.G.A. President at SU. I, along with the campus queen, Miss Southern, would welcome visiting fans with open arms. I can remember receiving visitors from Jackson State, Alcorn State, Texas Southern and UAPB. I would appoint committees of students to be on standby to accommodate our guests. We rolled out the red carpet that year unlike anything else. I mean we really rolled out the red carpet! I can remember UAPB coming to campus and staying on campus for several days as they studied the functioning of our student government structure, and returning the favor later that fall as we visited their Pine Bluff campus, even coming to the Little Rock Airport to pick us up. The only time I was ever attacked as a visitor to another SWAC campus was a visit I made to Jackson State. When the game was over, and as I made my way to Interstate 20, I discovered that my car had been broken into. This is the first time I have ever made mention of the incident in this forum because it was not the fault of JSU, but the fault of some young thugs who live that kind of lifestyle. I understand that! And I would never attribute that incident to JSU just to try and diminish or stain its reputation. Reputations are hard enough to build and sustain, as it is. And they should never be taken for granted.

That is the issue that a lot of fans have with Southern. They are not scared to go to Southern because of y’all fans it’s because of y’all surroundings. Y’all fans are cool they talk stuff just like Jackson st. I have witnessed myself about y’all area when I went there y’all hosted us for homecoming in 2018. It’s was people everywhere all in the way not affiliated with Southern.. I made it to Baton Rouge at 3:30 for a 6:00 game and wasn’t able to make it to my seat until midway in the 2nd quarter

How tiny of a font size you used so we couldn't read that....

SU can make a game change with their crowd and so can Alcorn. Me personally I’ve attended probably the two most fearful environments at night being LSU and white out at Penn State. The only SWAC school that’s came close to that from being just loud and overwhelming in my personal experience was JSU because of the capacity and how the stadium is made. I think if SU had a bigger stadium they would be right there as well. We aren’t fearful right now though so we need to get back on that level with Alcorn and SU

The most feared stadium. That’s easy. That’s the one that have everyone hotter than fish grease heading back down I-20. Eddie Robinson stadium. The last time Jackson st won there James Bell was the coach in 2004. The last time Alcorn won there was in 2006 when Johnny Thomas was coach. Both of Alcorn wins came against Spears .

Mumford stadium is feared to all schools except one. This one school have only lost there 3 times in 20 years (07, 09, 11)

Exactly!!! If we're talking stadium or SCOTLANDVILLE Killerz.
We are talking about stadiums that visiting teams find winnning to be difficult and scarce, and wins to be few and far between. Stadiums that make visiting teams not want to get off the bus! Much could be said about the environments that surround a venue or place, but I won't go there

What about the malfunctioning scoreboard? Its hard to win when the scoreboard goes out when the opposing team is winning.

dude the rest of y’all WISH y’all had a football stadium & basketball arena as good as ours.
New and shiny aluminum stadiums, as indeed all stadiums, at some point will grow old. ASU has a new football stadium and a relaively new basketball arena. What did your facilities look like before the new ones were built? Most likely old and/or rented off-campus facilities. The next new stadium or arena that will be built will look better than the previous! So having a nice facility(ies) is relative! SU's football stadium was built back in 1928. At the time one of the nicest football stadiums on a hbcu campus. We enjoyed our new on-campus stadium for 70 or more years before ASU got its first on-campus facility. Brick/mortar/concrete facilities like Mumford, you simply keep modernizing and expanding them as the need arises. When SU built the Clark Center in 1978, I think, no one in the SWAC had a domed basketball arena. We were clearly ahead of the game! As a matter of fact, the Clark Center was analyzed and considered in the planning of the Acadome. Now here we are more than 30 years later finding ourselves preparing to do major renovations to it, together with expanding our baseball facility and adding turf to its playing surface as well as to the softball facility. Again, the point I am making is that having nice new facilities are all relative. At some point those facilities will grow old and then.............

Baton Rouge is a metro area with a population just under 1 million; it is not like driving around Lorman or Port Gipson or Vicksburg even! I can tell you, you arrived in BR way too late!

What you know about my hometown Vicksburg? I know next time I go to Baton Rouge to leave out early.

I have visited the city a couple of times. I have a first cousin who used to live there. A very good friend and co-worker, from Mendenhall (sp), used to speak fondly of the city!
