I agree, your reputation was built by what your band did during halftime.

:topic:
That wasn't the point and I'm pretty sure you knew that. But, a quality band's reputation is built on more than just halftime. There are some very solid bands who do not do well at halftime.

Yes, I followed you off topic by responding. But, who cares... This entire discussion has literally turned into filerbustering without understanding the valid points that are being addressed, whether it changes anything or not.

Anyway, carry on with the endless talking in circles without listening to each other.

Peace...

Dude...my point is that while I agree that some people come to the games to see the bands, the bands don't generate as many people as you think. I seriously doubt there will be a huge drop in attendance going forward.

These are black folks you are talking about. We keep putting the kind of football product we have on the field in the SWAC and then make the bands really become spectators only to really perform at halftime is going to send even more home or find something else to do. I am shocked at how much you de-value the bands. Part of JSU and SU game atmosphere are the bands. Back when the SU fans and JSU fans knew in the 80s that JSU would probably win and win big......that game drew in large part because of the bands. The game got bigger in the 90s after Pete arrived and we became competative. But make no mistake about it. There are games that those extra folk go to just because of the bands. When the Ocean was at its best. The SU and TxSU game would draw big at Mumford, shole wasn't for the football game.

But if you think these even newer school folks will flock to our games with all these rules changes then you are mistaken. Even though I personally don't think the bands are better than the old bands......they are more popular than we were back then nationally. HBCU bands are at a height of popularity. Only a few of us enjoyed that back in the day. The Gram's , SU's, JSU's, FAMU's and Tn. States. Now you got more bands with more popularity and drawing power and the fact that you have all these internet media for folks to see bands they would never see. That's why these battle of the bands draw well if they are organized. Some even outdraw most of our SWAC schools home games combined.

Oh well. It no deal to me. Its up to new school to complain about it. I know I wouldn't want to waste my time practicing to just play at halftime and may a few times during the game. Might as well be like the PWCs. Only take your band on the road for the big games. No need for the schools to waste money on those trips in my opinion.

JR,

Now you know me better than this. I am not de-valuing the bands. I am very aware of the role the bands play. But I am just as shocked at the notion that this somehow is going to change black college football as we know it.

Nobody is asking the bands not to play. They just have to know when to play. It's almost as if nobody is even willing to try.

They are trying. At least SU is. But like folks said.......they are just sitting on their hands and folks are getting mad in the stands because the Juke can't play. That's all I am saying. I am still going to the games regardless because before I was a bandhead, I was a football head as a kid. So I will be there for SU no matter what. But I can't say all fans will do the same and I think our schools will see a drop off if the life is sucked out of the game. Unlike the PWCs who fans are rabid........we aint like that. We get riled up when our bands get crunk. Don't know why that is. But it seems like the games and crowd just sit there until the bands get them going. That's what my LB ZN means about the air being sucked out the games. Our fans aint rowdy on their own like they used to be.

See we aren't talking peaches to peaches, apple pies to apple pies or whole milk to whole milk.

My comments are merely addressing how the excessiveness of these rulings and who is empowered to enforce them will merely remove the ability of the bands to continue to be supporters of their teams along with the cheerleaders and the fans. My point on funds is that it is a waste to send 200-400 musicians to an event to safely play for 6 minutes when they are featured (far less time than they have every been alotted) with any additional playing during the game to support your game potentially being ruled as a violation of the knew rules and creating unnecessary punishment and negative publicity for that band.

The intent of the ruling was to enforce respect of the game and the opponent. Very very few bands don't do that already. But, these ruling will totally remove the positive impact of bands on the SWAC football environment. So, the results of the heavy handed guidelines will eliminate a band's first purpose for attending a game (support their sporting team) and minimize them to mere guest artist during intermission. The hardwork involved in preparation and the cost associated with transporting them to and from the events is not worth it. They may as well start booking their own schedules to attend events that they can receive donations and payments (NFL games, quality battle of the band competitions, etc...).

Personally, I'm going to attend the same games with our without any bands. But, I will assure you that the environment will be more appealing with the bands and cheerleaders of both schools actively involved with the games than it is with them merely taking up paid seats watching the game as any other novel attendee.

Anyway, carry on with the talking in circles and misdirection of valid points.

Peace...

The Grambling game without the band last weekend sucked....the thrill of knowing the fight song will be played after a big play means alot...

Our band directors are college educated professionals, our band members are college students, our fans are mostly educated and successful adults. We can work around this and make it work. The rules are in place... let's work through this. Again..Adapt, Adjust, and Accomplish!

This will make our events more enjoyable in the long run... we can still "do us". Just "do us" different!

What about the State Fair Classic? The Cotton Bowl is EMPTY after the half!:lmao:

The Bayou Classic BOTB, it fills half the dome every year. The same people at the BOTB are at the game the next day.

As far as the rules go, the only rule I really like is both bands not playing at the same time. I hate that sh!t...but its about the football team and support of the football team not the bands.

The point is that it should really be rare when both bands are playing during the game. The rare exceptions would be when the game is nearing the end and it is very tight game and the team on defensive is receiving encourgement from its band, cheerleaders and fans and the offensive team is also receiving encouragement from its band, cheerleaders and fans. It has absolutely nothing to do with the playing being about the fans. Its about supporting their team. However for the rest of the game, the previously understood rules were you would play when your team has the ball and to stop or bring it down softly when the team approaches the line of scrimmage.

The rule could have stopped at only 1 band playing at a time with priority being given to the team with the ball, or who has just made a big play. This would have address those couple of directors that are only there for themselves and who are being rude to their opponent.

Nobody has an issue with the intent. The issue with what will be produced as results is the over legislating, which will remove the bands from the game, with the exception of halftime. Now, they will all be at the game for themselves, since they can't participate in the supporting of their team.

That was never a written rule. That was just the way it was done. Unfortunatly, the band have even gotten away from doing that.

I agree with the over legislating part. But it still does not remove bands from the game.

They run out of turkey legs by then! :)

Now, those of you that come to the State Fair Classic know there are more situations impacting the type of crowd that is present at that game. It is Dallas' Black Event of the year, because it is basically Black Day at the State Fair of Texas. So, a number of the attendees are there for the fair, with the game and its halftime as part of the events they are going to experience at the fair. So, even though the game is about to become more and more competitive, like last year, a large number will still leave after halftime, so they can finish visiting the booths and rides at the fair. That is the only thing about the State Fair Classic that I don't like. I enjoy football at all levels, including SWAC football. I enjoy the PV vs GSU Band rivalry. Grambling brings a lot of energy, usually, to this game. PV usually has a large number of good fanfares to play in gaps during the game. So, they both tend to keep the crowd into the game until they feel they have to rush out to finish their tour of the fair. Those of that remain continue to enjoy that big game feel that the bands and the cheerleaders are encouraging the fans and the team to raise the bar and reach.

So, some of you may be a little hard on these bands at this event thinking the crowd is leaving because they have put the bands ahead of the game. That isn't the case. They have put getting their money's worth for the fair over the entire game atmosphere. This is a unique situation.

Peace...

I agree with the over legislating part. But it still does not remove bands from the game.

In the music world among one another, there are some unwritten rules that are understood as hard rules of musicianship and professionalism, very similar to some unwritten baseball rules.

I know I'm late, but this new rule is going to take the fans out of the game which will mean less revenue for the schools.

You are right...they leave after the half. So why aren't the fans staying to see both bands play during the 3rd and 4th quarters?

Becuase the show was over and they would be forced to watch 2 more qtrs of bad football. (Back then, now it is different...football that is)

With most of the folks at the game, its about getting what they can out of the fair, while not missing the Black Event of the Year for Dallas. It will help a little for the game to be very competitive. But, most of those folks are still going to break after halftime to get to the rides and fair games. That may change when most of the tickets sold are from alums and true SWAC football fans (like me) that are there merely for the game.

Is the coach to throw the red flag if a band is playing out of rotation?

Coach: "Ah ref I challenge"

Ref: "What are you challenging"

Coach: "That band played when it was not their turn."

Ref: "Give me that flag you silly Basket."

:lmao:

I saw the replay on CST last night, it was noticeably quiet, seemed like a Sun Belt game. I think it's safe to say that the rule is stupid, because by all accounts I'm a casual fan and if it's noticeable to me its a problem

No, the SWAC has placed it in the hands of the refs. So, it all depends on if the refs will attempt to handle these added responsibilities, which they really should have to concern themselves with. But, what band wants to put their perception in the hands of SWAC refs? :smh: Unless these rules were stimulated by coaches, and I don't think so, I wouldn't expect coaches to concern themselves with it, unless the opposing band is playing outside of a timeout. All that takes is for the coach to get in a Side Judges ear and for the Side Judge to get the head ref's attention and the enforcement begins. So, if you don't play, no one can snitch on you. In the SWAC, it isn't about justice. It's about not being alleged.

LB, Plow was just being sarcastic about how dumb the rule is. LOL.

I'm hoping most of the responses are sarcastic. Because if people really want what we are getting, some of the best memories that we have all experienced at SWAC football games will be a thing of the past.

It is what it is and it will be what it will be. So are the days of our lives...
