The Arch Nemesis
Administrative Procedures for Bands

The Rules states: Persons subject to the rules, including bands, shall not create any noise that prohibits a team from hearing its signals.

Procedures

a. Once the offensive team breaks the ?Huddle? and approaches the line of scrimmage the band shall cease playing. Bands shall not play music at football games while the ball is play, or while signals are being called by the quarterback. This means that it is not permissible to use either:

1. Drum roll or beat
2. Cymbals clashing
3. Horn sounds, or
4. Any other kind of musical instrument while the ball is in play is underway in football.

b. It is designated that for all Conference games the visiting band be allowed to perform during the first dead-ball, team or official timeout. The home team band will be allowed to play during the next dead-ball, team or official timeout. From that point on, both the visiting team and home team bands shall alternate playing during breaks in play for the rest of the contest. At no time are both bands allowed to play simultaneously during the game.

1st Timeout - Visiting Team Band

2nd Timeout - Home Team Band

3rd Timeout - Visiting Team Band

4th Timeout - Home Team Band

5th Timeout - Visiting Team Band

6th Timeout - Home Team Band

c. The half-time intermission shall be limited to 20 minutes. The clock will start immediately when both teams and the game officials clear the field.

* Visiting Team Band shall play first
* Home Team Band shall play second

d. No penalty flags will be thrown, nor will any team be penalized. The referee will stop play and announce to the fans that he is asking the band to stop playing. This will also signal the public address announcer to make the same request. The game officials will do this twice per team.

Any additional violations should be reported to the Coordinator of Football Officials who in turn will advise the Conference office. Bands found to have violated the policies listed above may be subject to the following penalties.

1st Offense - public reprimand and censure;
2nd Offense - public reprimand and suspension from performing during the next contest and/or a fine to be determined by the Commissioner;
3rd Offense - suspension from performing for the remainder of the season.

My Question is this: Does the SWAC office have this type of authority? If so, how, when the band if a function of the school not the athletic Department.

Does the SWAC give the Band any funds or scholarships?

I would love to see them enforce these suspension rules.

Good point. Outside of mandating the playing cease after breaking the huddle, do they really have that type of authority?

Does a game official have the authority to penalize a band for playing while the ball is in play?

Didn't the SWAC suspend SU and PV for a game for that band fight that took place a while back?

Of course they can/

The way I see it (for those that are complaining) the SWAC band directors are to blame for all of this. For years, the bands ignored what was going on the field so that they could do what they wanted to do. You all had you chance and you blew it.

Good for the SWAC!

I can agree with that too.

Absolutely right. I remember too many times the head coach, assistant coach, trainer, players motioning to the band to stop playing but the band would rip it anyway. :lmao:

Was it the SWAC or was it the schools? I dont remember.. Let's let some former band member chime in on that one.

I just dont believe the SWAC office can exercise this type of Authority, esp if the school backs the band.

I want to see the SWAC suspend the big money making bands. E.g. Southern and Jackson State.

Oh well. I still don't think the bands are that bad and I am a big critic. I sincerely hope bands start staying at home if folks think they are such a distraction. I have never seen SU band disrespect Pete and the football team. I also see Mr. J closely watching the action. Maybe some of these renegade band directors trying to make a name for themselves have caused some of this. Might as be like the PWCs and only have the home band show up for the most part. I know I wouldn't want to play in this era. Glad I marched in the 80s.

Question...

Will these rules against the band actually make the football teams perform better?

If we haven't noticed, since these stupid band rules have been implemented, SWAC football hasn't done anything to write home about. SWAC football...as an entity....SUCKS. I suppose this is the bands' fault too. Give me a break...lol

Whoever made these rules can take'em and shove'em. They need to worry about how to improve the actual Athletic Departments, instead of worrying about what band plays what , when, and how.

The SWAC has really taken a few steps back with this...

Have you ever been to the circus know as the State Fair Classic in Dallas?

That isht is gott dayum disgrace with the GSU and PV bands both leading the charge. I mean they don't give a dayum about what is going on the field.

:smh:

I've never seen a band....

...make a QB throw a ball repeatedly to a receiver constantly covered by three defenders

...make somebody fumble

...make a receiver miss a wide open catch

...make a defender get his but burned in the secondary

...make a football team play worse, but I have seen them pump a team up when they were down.

...make the top 100 high school athletes in the country continuelly go to the same schools, but ignore HBCU teams

...make the runner up of the Rose, Cotton, or any Bowl game say "Man we could've won if our band wasn't so loud"

Nope haven't seen none of that, but I have a declination of talent head to certain schools as time progresses on. But I guess we'll just blame the bands(who still attract a quality of musicians and students that are equal to if not better than their PWC counterparts)

Peace and Practice

I got to give you a "Peace and Practice" on that one LOL

And I suppose the football teams compensate for the "circus" of a football game, that is led by the bands?

That's not the point. Never has been. It is about the quality of the product when presented from start to finish.

I understand if this goes over the head of some of you.

I haven't either. But I have seen football teams penalized for bullisht that bands do in the stands.

Nice try though.

and I've seen silly arse Swac refs that miss the obvious calls and then make up others that never existed. I guess he was grooving to the bands that was playing at those times.

Slim send help.........

If you haven't realized, SWAC "football", as a product, is a laughing stock. It just sounds like the "football faithful" are bitter because the bands are LITERALLY saving our precious product that is SWAC Football. Subjecting our bands to these rules ain't gonna improve the quality of our "product" at all....

If that were true, then there would be no need for these rules then...right? There is absolutely no way you can justify them.

I already have and some of the examples have been stated in this thread. Ask some of the GSU band heads about how Grambling almost lost that game against BCC in Cincinnati a few years back when the football team was penalized playing why the ball was in action.

The SWAC has no reason to make rules like this if there are no existing problems.

OK, so what does that have to do with the bands? One thing has nothing to do with the other.

The point is that the Swac is too busy worrying about when the bands play that they still can't get their own officials to call the game. Swac officials are a joke in football, basketball and even baseball.

It is...I still don't understand your point.

Thats the California in you..... LOL
