SWAC Powershift From The West To The East.....

Disclaimer: NO SMACK INTENDED!

Do you really think so? You say, "It seems that in 2010 the East is the stronger of the two", but based on what? No jokes, seriously, the ONLY school in the East that is STRONG is Alabama State, being that they have won 3 out of 4 CONFERENCE GAMES!

Fist bolded statement:

I agree, it is still TOO EARLY in the season to determine. As for the East playing better f/ball, I can somewhat agree on that, and my reasoning behind that is because one school in the East, Alabama State, is carrying the East right now. If, and I do mean IF the East is or does become the stronger of the 2, a large part of that will be because of the Hornets.

Second bolded statement:

If how the stronger of the 2 Divisions is based on how each is playing ball right now, it is still too early to determine (in my personal opinion). But if you base this on conference play, which is the route I go, then it's still too early to determine. UAPB, for example, has only played one conference game, and while we did lose to the Hornets, we still have a chance to prove ourselves. Our remaining schedule is Southern, Prairie View, Alabama A&M, Alcorn, Grambling, MVSU, Jackson, and TXSU; tough schedule, but we do have a chance, and I'ma be optimistic. And unless I'm mistaken, most of us (SWAC schools) have schedules that look similar. In other words, based on conference play, it's still too early to determine.........unless you're Alabama State, which is currently carrying the East. Yes, Jackson State won their first 2 games, but they were non-conference. Yes, Southern won their first game, but that game, too, was non-conference, and they lost to UAM, but again, non-conference.

Third bolded statement:

Again, I somewhat agree. Remember, most of us (SWAC schools) made some major changes in our coaching staff.......and whether it's winning or losing, those changes are showing!

My answer for this thread was Its way too Early to tell because there is plenty of ball left to be played. As far as the assessment I was using to compare how the teams are playing ball RIGHT NOW was based on : Wins and Losses to opponents, common opponents (that opponents in and out of conference), the strength of that opponent, the margin of victory between common opponents, stats both offensively and defensively, coaching etc. As of right now GSU, JSU, Alcorn, and Bama state are playing some pretty good ball and that was no knock at PB it was just a personal opinion of mine based on the games I've seen, the strength of play etc. None of us have really scratched the surface of conference play but I'm more than confident that our boys will get it done and we may see 1 at most 2 more losses in route to the Championship. I fully expect them to handle their biz when and if they make it.

Note: I did say that it "seems" that the balance of power has shifted. In my mind, PV's loss to Bama State kind of shifted the balance, but as some of you have said, it's still early.

I see your reasoning Jay, but was Bama State's win done in a convincing manner (18-15)? They did win the game, however, I think it was more than likely due to PV's "lack of effort" than Bama State's talent level. Nobody's fault but our own. 9 times out of 10 we win that game.

I think the East's toughest teams, as of now, are Alcorn and Jackson State.

Uhhh, bull dawg, as of now, the West is not stronger than the East. Bama State beat your second and third best team, in PV and PB. Alcorn beat Bama State and beat them handily.
As of now, the East is playing better ball.

JSU more than likely will run through the West, but like somebody said, we can't take any team for granted.

Ya'll??? Dude, I'm from A&M, from the East and I'm not saying the West is stronger, I'm saying you have no basis for saying the East is stronger.

There have been only 5 cross divisional games:

TSU beat A&M
A&M beat SU
AL St beat APB
AL St beat PVU
GRAM beat JSU

The East won 3 and the West won 2 this is hardly dominance.

He just told you what HIS basis was...see post #27

Let me rephrase, there's no LEGITIMATE basis for such a claim. One game does not a power-shift make.

This whole argument seems to be founded upon false logic. I think JayRob's claim is an overreaction to an unexpected win by Alabama State (a team everybody thought would be running it's coach off by midseason) over a Prairie View team, everyone expected to be extremely good, but may just be anaverage squad this year.

It would be more accurate to talk about conference parity, instead of presuming a changing of the guard.

Nor will the JSU defense pose the obstacle to their run game as Grambling's did...also factor in that both KJ Black and Babers will have four more weeks to heal up. Their schedule prior to playing yall is Valley, Pine Bluff, Lincoln, and Southern. Not to put down on any of those but that's not exactly a daunting schedule of games so they might not have to use either of those guys extensively.

I observed us against both teams and to be honest PV has the better defense of the two and their receivers seem just as capable. The margin of victory should have been about the same...granted yall came back and made it close late, but that was more due to a bobbled fumble inside the 5 that would have made it 35-14. PV stopped us defensively... we ran up and down the field on yall all night.

Dang MikeB, will I have to use the same duct tape on you that I had to put on P88's mouth, let JStank keep being cocky and laughing at ole no good PV :lmao::lmao::lmao:

I fault myself for opening this bullshyt, I knew it would be just that, congratulations J-Rob you are true to form!:retard:

Somebody move this foolishness over to the smack board!

PV's had a decent defense over the past three years, but your offense this year hasn't kept up for some reason. Black isn't the player he was last year.
For instance, you only scored 16 against Texas Southern, 17 against Grambling and only 15 at home against Bama State. Alcorn scored 41 on them. You get my point?

I'm not saying that JSU is a shoe-in to win the game, but what I am saying is that you'll more than likely have to score more than 2TD's and a field goal to win the game at Memorial. Nobody's taking PV for granted though.....believe that.

You have to remember that Black missed the TxSU game, was hobbled and first game back for the Bama State game and Grambling was a tough early matchup for any qb injured or not. He's a dual threat guy and is a bit hobbled. But their offense really isn't bad... just needs time. Now their defense gets after you...I'm serious. I rate your offense better (especially if yall can get a run game) but I can see PV offense starting to put points on folk late in the season. The thing that JSU has to be concerned with is will your defense improve it run stopping. Babers is still a good back...he's hobbled and can't break tackles due to the ankle. But if there's a sliver...he can dash still.

Gonna be a good game... PV is capable, bruh...really!

MB, don't think our defense won't get better. Our MLB should improve week to week just as you say Black should improve. PV showed on Satruday that they don't have the horses to run with JSU. Yeah, you may have fumbled and that helped us stay in the game but we took that fumbled and scored......got the ball back and marched down to the 12 yard line. PV was hopeless when they fell behind....as you will be the next time we play you.

Don't forget sTu starts off slow (x-fers getting to know each other) and finishes strong 5-1 in last six games of 09 season. Don't be foolish, sTu has some talent and jc's seat warmer is stuck in the on position.

The loss to PV had much to do with the team just not being perpared and poor coaching, Uconn was just :smh:, sTu gave away the TU game. This team should be 3-1 or at least 2-2. Damn you jc! This weekend is a big big game for sTu. I want to see jc's game plan and how prepared he has this team.

I dont think the coaching is going to get much better but the talent is there.

This is one of the better years the SWAC has had in terms of competitive teams across the board. I've watched some good games.

My opinion from the games I watched between Gram and...

Jackson has the highest scoring potential offense in the league. If they integrate the run into the offense more, they would be more difficult to slow down. During our game, I wasn't concern much with the passing game. Grambling's philosophy since Broadway arrived was allow for the underneath stuff but not the deep pass. A mistake by a corner (going for the ball instead of making the tackle) gave up a hugh gain. Overall, I was more concerned with Jackson's OC slipping in a run with the defense concentrating on the pass so much. He didn't do that. As for the defense, it can't do anything but get better against the run. Their LBs took bad angles putting them out of the play and giving our RBs one on one's with a DB. Lots of arm tackling too.

PV has a nice defense scheme overall. I think they are a little light up front in their defensive line and tend to blitz a lot (at least in the Grambling game) making themselves open for play action and the deep pass. They tend to crowd the middle of the field pre-snap with safeties playing within 10-15 yards of the line of scrimmage. Their offense is efficient and moves the chains. They are very balanced with the mix of the pass and run. They do seem to stall out once they cross the opponents 30 though.

I haven't seen Alcorn yet so I can't speak to them.

For the teams I have watch so far this year, this is how I would rank them:

1. Grambling
2. Jackson
3. PV
4. AAMU
5. Southern

Good observations: The OC mentioned that and said he kinda got away from some things that he liked to do so I'm sure that will get corrected. They've put more focus in on the run but as Comegy said those short passes for 4 and 5 yards are just as good especially if its open. A nice lil run game here and there wouldn't be so bad though.

As far as the defense goes they put in some new schemes that looked pretty nice the last game to stop the run. I'll hold off on any improvements until i see them go up against another good back. A lot of that arm tackling crap had a lot to do with how they were practicing. Up until the GSU game they were only 2 hand touch tackling in practice trying to avoid injuries. Lets just say now heads are being rolled around lol. You play how you practice, they should of been doing that the whole year.

Yall are definitely well coached, I look for every team to improve going forward.

We've had some quality play... I'm surprised at SU's collapse. Somethings wrong there...Maybe UAM is better than we give them credit and also A&M underachieved/underperformed in their loss to TxSU. That game was close then all of a sudden big plays started happening for TxSU (Who I think will improve once their turnover problem goes away)

Didn't Bama State just give up 41 points to Alcorn? If that's the case, how can they be better than Alcorn?

If you go back and read what I posted, I never said that Alabama State was better than Alcorn. I would not ever post one SWAC school as being better than another. :) What I thought I was trying to say was that IF the Eastern Division should become the stronger of the 2, then a large part of the credit goes to Alabama State.:)

I agree with you, oh Nasty one, which is why I posted the remainder to UAPB's f/ball schedule and also mentioned that the other SWAC schools also have to battle each other. But I do see the reasoning in Jay's basis, since you basing things on games that have been played.

Note: I did say that it "seems" that the balance of power has shifted. In my mind, PV's loss to Bama State kind of shifted the balance, but as some of you have said, it's still early.

I think it's a wonderful observation, Jay, and thanks for letting me put in my 2 pennies! :swink:

I can see where UAM could be better than what we give them credit for. They play in the same conference as Delta State and the talent level isn't that far apart. Those teams are some of the most fundamentally sound and most disciplined teams one could face. But with that being said thats still no reason for SU to be playing like they are. UAM may be better than we give them credit for but they arent that much better, SU is just not that good.

As far as the A&M TXSU game, we all have those types of games where we underachieve/underperform (beginning of 2007 season for us). How they play going forward will show what type of team they really have.

Your staff is aiight but right now you are living off of an experienced defense.

I like how they game plan, Comegy could use a little help in that area. Didn't particularly care for him drawing up plays etc AFTER the GSU game was over, do that at the Half.

Man, I'm stunned...no smack this time (not yet anyway). I don't think it's scheme as much as it's just these kids ain't playing that well. I really haven't watched them this season but looking at the numbers they are not handling things up front.
