SWAC going FBS? (SCSU nor TSU never got invites to the SWAC but BCU did)

Great post. I will say, I’m interested in the details of this plan. I suppose we could transition 6 members to FBS who meet the criteria and then bring the rest up when they’re ready since they’ll already have a conference invite. (https://bleacherreport.com/articles...sidering-a-move-to-fbs-unity-maybe-the-answer)

Who would be the strongest members to start the move? Last year only JSU, ASU, SU and FAMU met the 15,000 attendance threshold. Alcorn and Grambling were just short. How many schools currently offer the full compliment of 63 scholarships?

I've always said we can move up as a conference, as long as we progress up as an athletic conference together. We need to honor our past and stop trying to relive it. Those days are long gone. We should be thinking on a much higher level, such as, we can do almost anything those Power 5 schools have done. One way of being successful on the next level, we need to take full advantage of all available resources we have and stop waiting on others to show us how it is done. IMO, part of the reason why the MEAC conference is losing members, the surrounding DII HBCU programs have viciously attacked them for not being a true DI conference, basically doing whatever to say they are their equal, which they are not. We shouldn't be thinking regressive, but progressive. It's the only way we can stay competitive as an athletic conference. Plus, once we have been at the FBS level for a while, the awards will pay off monetarily. And who knows, we might get a school that could challenge those Power 5 schools on a regular, like Boise State did. The best way to survive and to prove our worth is to challenge them on all levels. The world will not sit still and wait for us to catch up.

And what money we are going to do it with? We still want to go to war with Nerf Guns. The SWAC has been D-1 Basketball for years and where are we? If we are going to do it, support it right for us to compete and not be the brunt of ESPN laugh moments!

The money would come from a phat TV contract like most other P5/G5 conferences.

‘Getting a tv network like the Big Ten, ACC and SEC would help too. But have it on a streaming service like Hulu, Sling or YouTube Tv to adjust to the cord cutting.

Did you watch the video??? Especially the part when the Commissioner stated that we would receive about twice as much as we receive now for playing Power 5 schools. In order to support it right, we need to make sure that the individuals that we put in-charge are the right people to move us forward first competitively. IMO, Broadway did exactly that at NCA&T. This is just not a monetary thing, but an opportunity for our institutions to develop and grow from within. If we want to be respected, we need to show that we can compete at the highest level possible.

Seriously, we talk about lack of resources. But, how many of our schools have actually started to look into building a athletic facility? Seriously, done a study? I bet, we have not done one study.

If we ever are serious about our schools. We need to do the basics, and quit trying worrying about things that you can not control.

That's gonna be the biggest challenge.

If you don't have a president and AD on the same accord, then it won't work. Plus you need stability in those positions

And most importantly, they have to know what the f**k they are doing.

How many of our schools are ready to give all Full Scholarships? You can't give partial like they are giving now on the FCS level. A lot of our teams are not even close to giving the 63 they can give as a FCS team and they are not gonna give 85 as a FBS team.

I want us to compete at the highest level that we can. Will we get the players and resources to do that? Tired of us going to war with water pistols and the only time we are on ESPN is 60-0 beat downs and that after they call off the dogs at half-time. Do most of our schools have the right person to move us forward is a great question to ask.

you’re saying that like we’re the only ones that get beat down like that.

You have to understand, some of us have a regressive mentality. If you don't believe me, read some of the comments on other message boards posted by some of our DII HBCU brethen. Some of them actually believe that ALL HBCUs should be competing on the DII level or lower.

Dr. McClelland said that if a move happens, it will be the whole conference moving up INCLUDING Valley and UAPB and not a partial move (because you can't have a 6 team conference. That would basically mean 6 SWAC schools would be independent for a year or two)

As he stated in the video, PV was in a lot worse position than Valley has ever been yet they never got kicked out yet the internet ADs on here wanna relegate Valley to D2 when financially we are probably more solvent than almost every school in the SWAC.

The only schools that are in position to move up in 3-5 years from where they are now are PV, Alabama State and Southern because they have budgets that are about the same as or larger than ULM (the FBS school with the smallest budget). TSU, JSU, Grambling and Alcorn would have some work to do to get to that $13 million threshhold but it's realistic

Valley, UAPB and AAMU would have some work to do and that 5 year time frame would show if we have leaders in place that are serious about fulfilling Dr. Mac's vision or we need to clean house

I see that garbage sometimes. That mentality, It’s hustlin backwards like a mugg.
If we all D-2, then we’d complain about not getting media attention and potential to make money like even a Group of Five does.
Now is the time to start building up for a conference wide move up. Those who can, proceed with the plan. Those who can’t, stay in FCS or drop down.

AAMU had a $13M budget last year

You only need 6 teams to play football. Since we’re already playing D1 in other sports they won’t be affected. Do y’all have stadium expansion plans to meet the 15k minimum average attendance.

Horrible idea

Why is it so horrible??? Being comfortable and complacent at one level is a lack of intelligence, which goes against what colleges and universities stand for. Colleges and universities are institutions of HIGHER LEARNING, which means institutions of intelligent people who SHALL ALWAYS challenge themselves to grow and achieve at the highest level possible.

Also, I would like add. If the leadership of certain schools don't share the same vision as the conference commissioner, there are various options for them, such as membership in a PWI FCS conference or membership in a DII HBCU conference.

don't put us down there with y'all...we had one of the largest budgets in the SWAC last year.
