Hi. I'm new.

To the point, PVU & JSU are supposed to play this fall.
So giving an UNBIASED opinion what do yall think
will happen if the bands meet (because they might next year)?
The 2 bands havent seen each other since the late 80s/early 90s.

A battle and a half!!!!!

I'm sittin' here thinking about it.......all I can say is that it will be one he!! of a battle. I hope PV will have a few marches ready because JSU is going to throw them at cha!!! Sorry,...I love to hear good marches before the game!!!! Personally,....based on the type of music I like in terms of meaning, interpretative delivery and richness,....I think P.V. will have the edge musically. IMO they are one of the most chord resolving bands in the SWAC. The richest texture I have heard so far.

:topic: :I'm going somewhere with this next statement because I got something to say.

There are those who say that a marching band can't play music that has a lot of syncopation , tertian chord structure and melodic runs and I say,....:The Devil Is A Lie!!!:redhot: :redhot: :redhot: One should not be afraid of a challenge and settle for the easy road. Face the fear, consider the cost and allow the challenges to make you more musically competitive. It would be like a breath of fresh air to hear other meaningful music for marching bands other than the standard marching band regulars that every band in the SWAC as well as high schools will all be playing.

Let's keep the improvements going people.

Halftime?????

Based on what I saw last year,.......I really can't call a absolute winner. All I can say is that these two bands can hold their own but,.... it would be a bloody battle to the end,....one inwhich I wouldn't mind seeing!!!!!

I could be wrong, but the only way I think that JSU will bring their band to PV is, we (PV) would have to at least field a decent football team or we may have to possibly move the game, If we field a decent football team, there would be a sense of motivation by JSU to bring a big crowd and the Boom to a game that they are not sure to win

NO smack intended, but JSU's football team isn't good anymore. Depending on how much PV improves and with the game being so late in the season, a trip to TX may be necessary for the Boom. It would be a good match up though.

I agree. I was watching the 2004 Honda Battle of the Band tape, Prairie View?s sound remained me of how Jackson State's band sounded in the 1980's.

Welcome to the Band Board, Musikfreak!! :)

And I would love to see those two bands match up. I think it would be very entertaining!!

Jackson State's sound isn't balance, its trumpet heavy. The "Big Band Sound" is gone.

Whatcha know about JSU's history of having that "Big Band Sound?" :D

I know the "Big Band Sound" was started by William Davis at JSU. He was JSU's chief arranger under Harold Haughton after stepping down as Band Director. ;)

I've seen some tape of the BOOM from the 80's. PV's sound is and has been characteristically MUCH darker. JSU had this full, bright sound that had ALOT of brilliance in every voice. PV's sound is much darker and richer. I wouldn't even equate them (JSU 80's and PV now) as similar either except for maybe in the stands. PV even plays jazz and that would be where the similarity would end.

BlueBengal, where did you get your copy of the 2004 Honda BOTB tape? I'd like to get a copy. I was there and it was a great show overall.

Yeah, the way Prof. arranges our music gives it that dark, full
quality. And he likes to arrange jazz tunes too. Yall should
hear Giant Steps. But the BOOM still sounds good
compared to the few 80s clips that I've heard. Except they don't
use dynamics as much and the trumpets throw them off balance
just a tad sometimes. But hey, we could use a few of their trumpets.

Every Year

I hear this every year about PV trying and thinking they can give JSU Comp.

Stop comparing Jsu to 80's and 90's.........

Go back and watch your TXSO vs JSU 04 houston Tape and re think.

#1...The TxSU-JSU game is from 03....And I have the tape, was there, and I STILL feel the same. About the ONLY people who THINK it wouldn't be a good match-up is CERTAIN JSU posters. WE ARE NOT TXSU!!!! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!

So stop comparing us to them, quit ducking and dodging and bring your "On Top Of The Swac" arses to Texas to face up with some competition.

Or is the mighty JSU scurred to face competition from someone other than SU???

Andn why should he stop comparing to the 80's? They had a more ballanced sound back then. Now, your band is your trumpet section. That's all the dude was saying. Dayum. Some people...

i'm not hating but when j-state came to houston last year i was not impressed but i know of j-state and i know they just had an alright day. so saying that it will be a great match up when and if it goes down....maybe we can start a petition to both universities in order to get the trip considered......
