Southern Vs. Jackson State 1984

The field was taken more serious back in the day, today there is no creativity whatsoever! It seems as the mentality is lets get this fieldshow out of the way so we can go to the stands and its shows!

I don't think I was saying we were not good. But we lost that night bruh. Simple as that. They had a better show. That is all. The tape does no justice. They got the house that night. Outside of my CB Leonard Julien singing that night on the field was not what we wanted. But we knew that going in. The upperclassmen never wanted to do that show from the beginning. They knew JSU was coming with some smoke after what happened in 83. Doc wasn't expecting a new and very young band director in Dowell Taylor would be up to the challenge.

You can ask Oops who he thought won that night since yall see him down there all the time. Illinois Jag done already said it on here. We were crabs. I was pissed because being from Jackson I was out there blowing my arse off and marching my arse off that night. But their show just flowed better than ours. We had microphone problems....had a tuba player slip on The Bird routine and the fact the song was just old at the time for that season. Folks had done it. So it wasn't that we were sorry or something. But the staff....namely Roy Johnson screwed the pooch that week. Even Doc was pissed after the game. He worked the isht out of us the next week.......zipped the Dolls for their piss poor performance that night......(the JSU game was their only performance that year)......Tn State caught an arsewhooping that next week because of that homecoming night. The only solace was that we beat JSU on the football field.

We appreciate yall thinking we were on point. But as far as we were concerned that night........we took an L. I will argue anyone who was there that night to dispute it. If they do.....they are straight up lying and having too much pride to admit another band just had a better show. Aint nothing wrong with that. Hell that was the last time we took an L to them mofos while I was there.

See Jared.......you were not part of the Juke that night. You would have felt the same had you experienced it that night. That was the pride we had making us pissed. We knew we were a better band, but the show we had was not what it should have been. Folks were madder than a mofo and I wish someone would post the next weeks game in Nashville on how bad we fugged over TnState. It was a slaughter that night. Mind you Tn State was bringing the heat in the stands....but we were acting like we were on steroids that night. That was what Illinois Jag was talking about being worse than what they had did to JSU the year before.

I repeatedly said I understand all that is being said.. I'm just saying.. my time don't view shows like such.... Of course we know when another band out house us... But if we go back and look at the show and look at both shows on Monday evening and the other band look like crap during everything except dance routine, we didn't give that band too much credit.. (Not saying this is what took place in 84 on this clip) Because JSU looked solid all the way around.. drilling, sound and execution... Only point I am making is, from the way I was brought up and taught, that same show by both, by the crowd I came up under would not frown upon SU for that show.. alls I am saying..

I ain't taking NOTHING from JSU that night by saying, from watching that clip(SEEING and HEARING SU) don't look nor sound like yall got yall AZZ kicked...I know that may have been the feeling that night in the heat of the moment.. But REVIewing the footage.. SU gave nothing CLOSE to a POOR performance... That's where the misunderstanding is coming in at..And the way I and most folk from my time call it.. we would not have called that performance "GETTING YOUR AZZ KICKed'... We would have said JSU out housed SU...

To me it seem more like you all put more into getting house versus emphasis on the actual performance.... And it's UNDERSTANDABLE why... because all or most bands were taking care of the marching fundamental... My time... it wasn't like that...So excuse my way of looking at this clip...lol

Sorry for not thinking yall got kicked....lol

Same thing happened my crab year.. ASU had a great TUBA section.. everything else was the pits.. marching, sound, everything.. but they took our house... They show we did was pushed by DOC, upperclassmen kinda liked it, us crabbed KNEW it was going to SUCK azz.. That was the "COME AND RIDE THE TRAIN" dance routine... after that show, we ain't play it no more... Doc, let that dance routine some what erase from the student body memory and came again with it for BC.. surprisingly it took to a more national audience, VERY WELL... the same dance routine that got booed...It was a hot song.. but it was too much urban stuff out the crowd was looking to hear for us to be playing that commercial isht.... Trust me I understand the feeling...

I guess it hurt you all more because JSU was actually a real good band as well that year... But I still don't say yall got yall azz kicked...LOL

Your numbers are skewed. And, your reality ain't SU's reality. Not now days, it's not.

First off....you can hear the "S" from anywhere in the stadium. That's fact.

I think you sleep'n on how much the stand game has grown all the way around. Heck, the meac has even gotten deeper into it. And, you KNOW how they used to get on the SWAC for sounding SWACish and only caring about the stands....:retard:

95%?....nah, playa. I ain't buy'n that one....

Just like I tell any JSt.er, when they swear SU ain't kick'n as much arse as they say...."look at the numbers/views/comments".

Same thing here.....folks run to those stand clips. Folks can't wait for someone to make a clip with both bands playing the same song. 5th Quarters are big...and, often turn into conspiracty theories about why it's NOT up, if it's not up in a timely manner ( ). And, recently...due to a band right in your own back yard...Zero Quarters have an aisle in the bandhead video store.

So, if you wanna say halftime ain't any less popular. I'll return and say that the stands have gotten that much more popular, due to the internet.

Im going by what I see...and, those halftime clip numbers are suffering. Not saying folks don't look at halftime clips. But, they just don't get as much play.

So, don't hold it against someone for not believing that 95% of the crowd that came to see the bands, are mainly there for halftime. Folks like to be fake and hold up some kind of "musical" front or oath, and say their main focus is halftime....when they're the main ones there 2 hours early...and, staying until the lights go out. And, mad as he!! when it ain't no fifth.

Don't take my word for it. Peep it for yourself.

This post will open up another can of worms in reference to the crowd appeal to the hard work that is being put on the field vs. 20 years os so back...

SUtrp96,

After 24.5 years, I will concede your point; the video does not convey what we felt that October night in 1984. You are correct, all judges may not conclude the opinions of JR, others and myself. However, the halftime performance we provided did not meet the need of our customers (those sitting in the stands) based on THEIR measure of success. Although we had a standard we considered higher than most, we too had the responsibility to entertain. We failed to entertained at the level that excel above that given by the Boom. Although, what is seen on the video offers much redemption for us, we cannot discount the response of those in the stands. If we do so, we will only perform to please ourselves and not those who come to be entertained. It is a disservice to the Jukebox to ignore the needs of fans and only do shows pleasing only to the Jukebox; this would be like producing a great product that no one like enough to buy.

There is much merit in Tigerpride statement; most people (not band heads like us) come for halftime. If we don't care if halftime is entertaining, we are sure to loose halftime support.

What happened in 1984 was a good thing, it showed us that a good performance is not just precision, fundamentals or perfection...it must be entertaining.

JR, you are off your game. The week after the J-State game in '84 we had a game against Alcorn that we did not attend. The Tenn St. game had to be at lest two or more weeks later. The show at Tenn St (I think) was the same as we did at Texas Southern earlier that year (purple rain).

Good Day and God Bless

LOL. Man I can't remember everything from back then.
For some reason I thought the Alcorn game was after the Tn State game. But you are right.......we didn't go because I remember Doc saying the stands on the visitor side was not big enough back then.

We did the same dance routine to Doves Cry and Jacuni did the Purple Rain deal in Nashville to close out the show like we did in Houston earlier. But the TxSU game we did different opening drill and then we did that April in Paris cut by Count Basie that my section leader Carmouche played the solo on because he was from H-town. Rose Jackson then danced to Glamorus Life with my CB Darrin from Detroit playing that Soprano Sax solo in the middle of it.

We totally changed the drill for Tn State. We did Seventeen by Rick James did the score...then for my first time we did the Circle Drill and Star to Hearts to Heart like yall had done in 83. Then the Super 5 did that What People do Money in place of the Dolls or Rose Jackson. Winston Moore and my CB Wallace did the Rap while the super 5 did their thing. I can still see Andre Ross(still the coldest DM I ever saw at SU) getting on his tip toes at the end of that routine and getting major house.
