Man,
You had to be there. That's all I will say. The upperclassmen were pissed about that show from the outset. No one wanted to do The Bird......they told Roy all week we were going get waxed with that isht because it was too late to do that dance routine. The Ocean open up the season with that dance routine and so did other bands. Roy kept telling us to wait and we'll do it later. The highlight of that show was my CB Leonard Julien singing Luther Vandross Superstar with Rose Jackson (played Larenz Tate's GF in Dead Presidents) was dancing.
Our show wasn't wack........just didn't get the HOUSE that JSU did. Believe me, you could see on our faces when we got back to the stands. Doc even knew it.......he drove our arses the next week and zipped the dolls for their piss poor performance(only one they did in 84) for the Tn State game the next week in Nashville. Super 5 replaced them.
Don't know what your homeboys are saying in New Orleans. But ZN, Big Thunder and others will tell you that they got us that night on the field.
BTW, you read wrong.......nobody got a pass in the stands. We did our thing........we just didn't talk about like they do now. It wasn't about the stands for us because we already knew no one was on our level and only Tn State gave us a true battle in that department. Back then folks worried about Halftime. You had 10-12 minutes out there so you got to do alot of damage if your show was on point. Be careful on what all your homeboys say. Alot of them have their picks and chooses on who did what against us. I know damn well none of my frats from New Orleans are saying that we didn't lose that 84 battle. If they are.........well they aint being objective at all.
Ione JR, a lot of that don't set with me..
If the stands didn't mean much to you all like you say.. Why was SU so deadly in the stands? Why would SU have a reputation for being vicious in the stands if stands was taken so importantly.... Again, why bother preparing stand tunes outside of the crowd pleasures?
The stand footage I grew up on of your time don't reflect that attitude.. To me it look like everything was held with high regard...
And if your band is in attendance at a performance every aspect of it should count... Maybe it took some of your N.O. LB's/bandmembers to watch footage to not feel the way you feel about that battle and others.. I done been to tape parties several of times and seen all of this footage, which is why I don't really post on much of it..
Former DM "Dinky" has all of the 79-80's footage.. Brinky and the whole game be over there bragin about stands and field.. They often say how you said no one could really fug with yall in the stands.. that was the same for my time..It just came 2000s when other bands started being more prepared for stand battles.
With that said, "THIS IS ME" speaking....You don't come to a battle with a gun half LOADED if you know the opponent gun is FULLY loaded....
I promice you SU would not have the reputation they have if the "STANDS" was a none issue... All that counts!
And I have a hard time understanding how you hold your head down when someone out "DANCE ROUTINE" you....Maybe that's the New Orleans in me..Where I come from.. It was RARE bands did dance routines and you were call country if you did em....
I saw several footage of crowd reaction... And it still amazes me how the crowds in New Orleans would react greater than most SWAC crowds on a consistant basis with out Dance Routines... ie. St. Aug, Kennedy...
Long story short all of that stuff "should" count.
Now I can understand being disapointed because you didn't get to do the dance routine of your liking, but to feel like you got waxed after watching all that work you dudes put on that field that night is beyond me...
Maybe it's a difference in culture... Because I have to admit, everyone that marched with me didn't look at band the same way most of us did....Most of us being N.O. folks and the leaders of the band who were kind folk to many of them cats you marched with... We got our mentality of band from those folks.. Your (Celestines, Santa Cruzes, Herb(Jughead),Oops, Beaver(Oops cousin)...etc..)
Cool fact { Rose Jackson (played Larenz Tate's GF in Dead Presidents) } I ain't know she was Juke..
