Southern Coaching Semi-Finalist

Re: Southern AD confirms his interest in Bethune-Cookman's Jenkins

Hey, I'm just saying that I know how these things go. SU will not be opening the checkbook that wide with other areas of concerns outside of athletics. You all are going to hire someone based on what you all can afford now. This is not 1990 or 2000. Everyone's checkbook is tighter and Odums come to you all at a very good, cheap price.

Of course they are man. You see that with all these coaching hires. Folks denying stuff until the hire happens. LOL. Nothing new about this. Broussard is actually being upfront about it and did the right then to contact Jenkins boss first. Some folks even at the FBS level don't do that. They have boosters and such make contact.

As for any of these coaches using our job as leverage. Doesn't every coach do that? If Texas comes after Nick Saban with an offer. Don't think he will not parlay that into some leverage at Bama. Look at Les Miles. Dude has someone drop a rumor about him every so often to leverage extensions at LSU. Twice with Michigan and just now with Arkansas. He knew he was going no where. It is a business. We have to be prepared to move in a different direction if we offer someone and they get it matched by their current school. No different than any school when trying to pry away a hot candidate.

I understand what ur saying...and I Get it....its a business...i just stated what it seemed like to me...i understand why he would do it if he were doing it which is kool get your money....but he made it seem like I said SU was going to loose sleep over it.....i wasn't....i seen atleast 3 that would be ok picks

We might not break the bank. But we don't have to be totally cheap either. Those other candidates will take less money. Spady, Hendrick etc are not going to cost any more than Odums is going to ask for. Don't think Big Worm if offered the job is going to not ask for at least 150K. LOL. It is the principality of it all.

Maynor is the only one who will try to break that 200K threshold. But even he has to understand that WS State can only give him so much more money at the level he is already at with him being paid 160K. They already look crazy paying that kind of loot to a D2 level coach when some FCS playoff semifinalist programs do not pay that amount to their head coach. BCU is not going to pay Jenkins 180K to keep him. Don't see it. Hell they finally started paying a football coach some money after getting the Shine Wyatt discount all those years. Whomever the other coach is that is not named probably isn't going to be breaking the bank either. Don't think SU is that hard up to pay decently. Broussard just gave all our women coaches some raises and we paid Banks a decent salary. Not Spivery money. But enough to get him in there. We just have to be smart on how we do it. I don't even think we pay Broussard what we paid LaFluer. So we saved money there with a better AD. LOL.

Unless one of these coaches ask for Doug like money, I think we will be okay with the salary. Most of us just hope we don't overpay for our coaches like our HBCUs have done in the past and some currently.

Are you Odums agent? Haven't you got Get Ready's memo that Odums does not pass the paper bag test. LOL.

Beans you really like the color of our Columbia Blue & Gold NUTZ huh??? :smh:

Dude you always instigating isht..

Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could see Beans is just trying to stir the pot and strike nerves. :emlaugh:

I think what you see is a nervous AD at BCU knowing that his coach is a hot candidate for a job that can pay more than his can. Nothing more and nothing less. Same thing happened when they lost their baseball coach to Bama State. I actually believe Jenkins is sincere about our job. But of course if BCU gave him a huge raise as a counter offer then he has no choice but to consider it. Especially living in his home state where there is no state income tax. I just don't think the BCU folks will give him that big of a raise to outbid SU. But in saying all this. Who knows if Broussard will even recommend Jenkins to the board after he conducts his interviews. He has 5 other candidates. Some will weed themselves out I am sure. We just got to let the process go forward. At least we are seeing stuff up front before names head to the SU Board. In the past, we didn't see much of any search until the candidate was in front of the board. LOL. Hell, last time I don't even remember our last AD even putting up a posting for the job. Them cats fired Pete so quickly without a plan. Well they (TC) had a plan. They wanted to slip Doug in there. So as long as no shenanigans like that is going on. I am content with the way things are happening.

Re: Southern AD confirms his interest in Bethune-Cookman's Jenkins

Pay/overpay is all relative. I think Comegy is overpaid at 190K but if he had us at or near our potential as a program I'd say he is a steal. Also it depends on where we get these guys from. If we hired a John Shannon, anything over 125K is too much since he's making less than 100K now at Biloxi high. But if we decided to go after one of M$U's assistant coaches - well there lowest paid guy makes around 200K. If SU wanted an LSU assistant they'd better be prepared to break the bank. If someone wanted to pull Buddy Pough form SC State - he's gonna cost 200K at least. I'd pay 250K or more for the right guy because a thriving JSU program is worth a lot of money.

I'm liking this hire situation....everything seems organized this time....i would have gave Pete his last year...if not that I would have been better prepared with the next coach

Re: Southern AD confirms his interest in Bethune-Cookman's Jenkins

Lol...

SU is about to be the new LSU lol...How LSU uses Les Miles to push the program, I think Brossaurd has picked up on it and I think "character" will be a major deciding point when selecting this coach...Even though Ws will count, I think dude is looking to see which candidate has that persona to put the program back to the point where it was in the 90s and beyond. I can see the university coming this year putting money (more than usual) to brand this football program...and I can see more or whoever the coach is being the catalyst behind it...Stump started it...

Pete all he did was eat at Pic-a-dilly lol....but Stump got the ball rolling by doing things outside of football to shine spotlight on the football program...I think he put some of his own money, but I think SU has picked up on it by seeing how LSU uses Les Miles as their catalyst to push their program even further. So I think this hire will be that person and lol..I just can't see.Odums doing this...dude is not a people person IMO..and what I mean..I just don't see dude like that LES miles type cat..to be the face of SU football...I just don't see him branding this football program....being on billboards...speaking at luncheons..hosting things in the community...scheduling non-conference tough exciting opponents.....

some times its more about what a school has to offer that will benefit the coach more than just money....SU is on TV more than most schools on this level and some bigger school....decent slots with both local news stations and news paper ....also there is the jaguar Journal broadcasting online and radio...which has alot of listeners outside of SU tuned in

For most coaches, its money. How many guys have you seen take a pay cut to change schools and take on more responsibility? None I'm aware of. Su has a lot to offer but I don't know anyone who'd take a pay cut to your headcoach.

It's even in the job description that the new coach has to help market the program like the PWCs have their coaches do. You have to kiss the babies and help politic the program these days. Help raise money. No longer can you just sit in your office and develop game plans and coach on Saturdays. You have to do more now as a coach which means you better have some damn good assistants to help you with the day to day football stuff. The one coach on our campus who does all of these things is Roger Cador. We need all our coaches to be community active and be the faces of our programs. Broussard understands this. You can see how he has conducted himself so far with being visible and being progressive with his line of thinking on how to sell the program. Our folks are hard people to please and we don't like opening up our wallets. So you better have someone who not only can win football games, deal with APR/graduate your players. They need to be able to connect to our fan base and get them to come back to the levels of the past by winning and also help the AD get additional monies out their pockets for fundraising.

Re: Southern AD confirms his interest in Bethune-Cookman's Jenkins

A coach who is trying to get to that next level and move up....its not like SU gives crappy pay

I don't think we will be asking anybody to do that. That's why you don't see folks like Cal Magee or some other FBS level assistants that are making big money on our list. I am sure they would love to be a head coach but surely do not want to lose that kind of money they currently make. Once guys get that high pay at the FBS assistant level with the LSU, Alabama, Arizona, etc type programs. We can almost forget getting them guys. That goes for the PWC FCS schools too. They can't pry a guy off one of those bigger FBS level programs to come coach at their schools for the most part. Say if ND State who is the best FCS team in the country lost their head coach. I doubt they would contact any coach at those bigger FBS programs to come coach there. Maybe at a MAC, or Big West school that don't pay their assistants that kind of money they will get someone. But you rarely see any FBS BCS type team lose an assistant to a FCS school. Especially at the coordinator position. Those guys still think they can get a lower tier FBS head job and want nothing to do with FCS.

From you looking on the outside...and from what you stated..Do you see Odums in this role...I only ask becuz me I don't see him being this person and I wanted to get another opinion..I don't wanna come off as a hater LOL

Right. Spady makes $105K at Nevada and he is the lone FBS guy. We'll pay more than that for sure, with a lower cost of living.

I have never met Odums. But I have talked to our AD. So I understand the type of coach he is looking for. As for Odums, I can't say I see that type of guy that Broussard is looking for. But I do not want to under estimate his skills at that level. Now as far as X's and O's I do think he has some challenges on game management and such. So I am not inclined to say he would be my first choice to stay on as Head Coach. He says the right things and has decent coach speak but he does not seem to be a guy that wants all that attention on him. If he could just coach it would be more comfortable for Big Worm. Unfortunately we need a make over for the football program. I think Stump did a lot of good with his efforts in the community and his monitoring of the players. We had no major off field issues under Stump and the APR improved. But now we need that coach who can get wins on the field and keep the other stuff going and take it to another level. Not sure Coach Odums is the right guy for that. I do however appreciate the effort he has given as the interim coach.

If Stump was smart enough to get good a good OC and DC and just be more of an administrator, he probably could have produced a winner. He has strong points but Xs and Os, game management as well as play calling ain't some of them. :emlaugh: Good guy though.

I agree  . He realized it after he was fired.

Re: Southern AD confirms his interest in Bethune-Cookman's Jenkins

Honestly, I can not see you guys paying more that 150K this year. I see you all dropping the pot back down to a reasonable price for your HC and trying to upgrade your assistants pay.

Nope. Ain't going to be that low dude or we wouldn't have contacted Maynor.
