Southern Coaching Semi-Finalist

Its not bad list, even without the 2 names that have not been mentioned. I still think it is a 2 man race between Brian Jenkins and Connell Maynor. I find it hard to believe jenkins would have said the things he said in the press conference after the playoff loss if he hadnt already got a call from a another program. Bethune Cookman is a great place to be. But the administration dropped the ball on the stadium deal. I think that may have rubbed Jenkins the wrong way. Jenkins or Maynor would be great for Southern because they both are the same. Young, Cocky, Confident, Damn good coaches, WINNERS... I dont think either would give a damn about any type of Alumni or Boosters running off at the mouth.

 2 good choices

Re: Southern Finalist...

Would you be concerned about how long it would take Jenkins to get the kind of players he needs to run the offense he runs. You dont have a running QB, RB, or a run blocking line he needs. Do you think he could make the transition in one year?

Re: Southern Finalist...

Maynor will ask for the moon and stars.

Well he might ask for it. But he got competition. So he can either wait until some HBCU decides to break the bank on him which I don't see. FAMU looks like they are going with Earl Holmes probably and the JSU job ain't open. Not too many big HBCU jobs that will give him the moon and stars. LOL. We all know the PWC FCS schools ain't going to do that. So unless he parlays a job as an assistant on a FBS staff. He is going to either have to be satisfied at WS State or take the best offer he can get from one of our schools. You know we already all pay too much for coaches so if SU offered him 160-180K. He might want to consider that a good offer. I don't know what he is making in NC. But I assume it ain't 180 at the D2 level. If it is. That's crazy. I hope we don't drop 200K again on a coach. But it has been well documented on here how I think HBCUs have overpaid for our coaches.

I will say this about Maynor though. He is winning in his playoffs. So I can't say he is getting paid just to win the CIAA. He is actually kicking butt otherwise. We shall see what happens. I just want to see who is the other coach who's team is still playing. Maynor and Jenkins are good starts to the search though.

Not at all GR. Good question. He would have to adapt to what we have for the first year. The good thing is that we don't have any RBs that will be left after this year anyway. So he would have to bring in his own players there. OL is still young except for Chris Browne who is gone after this year. I think most of it was technique and teaching of the OL. If Jenkins took the job he would have to modify his offense. He has this older white guy from Marshall as his OC. So who knows. That's why I hope if it is Maynor or Jenkins that they give him 3 years with a 4th year as an option with win incentives that allow the 4 year to kick in. Either guy will need at least the first year to adjust. The good thing is, there is one kid at Qb that came from Alabama who is more a runner than passer. But Dray will get his last year in. As much as we have given that kid grief for holding the ball too long. He did lead the SWAC in passing and he didn't have a ton of ints and he was more accurate this year than last season. Maybe some better coaching would allow him to get better. One of the things I thought hurt BCU was that they could not throw the ball with any consistency.

Re: Southern Finalist...

I would hope to have a better list to chose from.

Maybe the BC head coach but his on the field behavior won't be tolerated at SU.
Odums is a dark horse.
The two unknowns I can't comment on.
Whatever, we must have faith in Broussard.

Re: Southern Finalist...

If I were Maynor/Jenkins, I wouldnt let SU give me a 3 year with an option. Since I would have leverage in negotiations SU would have to give me a 4 year deal period at whatever salary we agree.

Also, if I were an SU fan, I wouldnt have faith in Broussard. I would want somebody else to walk him through and approve the entire process.

Let me ask you, who do you want? Maynor and Jenkins are probably the two best young HBCU head coaches out there. Everyone else is an assistant. Jenkins had some outbursts. I am sure he knows that can't be a normal thing as a coach. Not that other coaches haven't gotten away with the same actions at the FBS level and NFL level. You already know our refs will drive you to almost doing that. I still remember Pete chasing the ref in Jackson. LOL. Bill Cowher running the ref down with a photo of a missed called and stuffing it in his pocket. LOL. So crap happens.

Our jobs are good jobs but they ain't to die for. So some the best young black coaches out there going to stay on those FBS level staffs where they make a bunch of money and have a good life with minimal stress. Not many of the the FCS level coaches that are black are in coordinator positions at those PWCs. Most are position coaches. Now that it is fashionable to have a ton of black assistants on FBS sidelines now as well as the NFL. It makes it hard to for our schools to find coaches ready to be head coaches and deal with APR as well as be the face of your program.

So the list has Jenkins, Spady, Hendrick, Odums and two who don't want to be named since their teams are still playing. One is probably Maynor and who knows who the other one is. Could be Stoker at SH State or even Eric Dooley at UAPB. We don't know yet. But I don't think Broussard's list is bad by any means. Odums was going to be on there regardless. This is just the semi finalist list and we will see who the other 2 names are probably once the next weekend is over.

GR, the board still has to approve the process and salary. Broussard just presents the candidates. Don't know why you think it is rocket science to hire a football coach. Hell at the big schools the AD is told who to hire by the big money boosters. LOL. Not like most ADs have a ton of experience hiring football coaches. If they do, that means their coaches either sucked or they left for bigger and better jobs during their tenure.

I just like the fact that the SU administration and board is allowing Broussard to conduct his own search. The board can decide if they like his final candidate when the time comes. Also you can tell he is on the up and up because as he has info, he is releasing it to the public and not hiding it like folks have in the past. That's when you get folks trying to sneak in their boys like Clayton tried to do with Doug which cause our last AD to be able to slip in his pick. At least now it ain't no backdoor tactics going on. He done put the info out there and protected the two guys who are still coaching their teams.

So Jenkins been showing out at BCU?

He has had some sideline outbursts. Just think Comegy when he went off about the refs at Bama State a couple of years ago. I think Doug got a 15 yard penalty for going off on the ref this year at the Classic.

Maynor actually makes $160k which is insane for a d2 school.

Re: Southern Finalist...

Maynor will not be taking the Southern Job for 160-180K...Southern will have to give him 200K +...so give it or go with the others and that is not a lot of money for FCS school our cheap asses need to pay these coaches and assistants!

FCS schools do not routinely pay 200K for their head coaches. We opened that pandora's box. Have you checked the salaries at some of these FCS powerhouses? ND State just paid their coach 196K in a new 5 year contract in 2011. Jerry Moore who has won several titles and coached forever at App State is retiring at 230K as his last salary. Gram pays Doug 225K. Those coaches are winning National Championships. WTF are ours winning? They can't even win a fugging OOC game. I agree that we need to raise the assistant coach salaries up. The reason why they are so low is because we are paying coaches 200K to win the SWAC and nothing else. They don't even have to win an OOC game. Both Montana and Montana State's coaches make around 155K. Ash at Montana State just got his raise last year from 137K to that amount. Baldwin at Eastern Washington is barely making 125K. Yall need to stop with all this. HBCUs over pay for the head coaches. While these white FCS schools who are consistently winning are not. I can understand Jerry Moore making the money he was at App State. But hell dude was there forever and earned his 230K. We just hand that out for applying. I bet Sam Houston State ain't paying that kind of money to their head coach either. I know I posted salaries before in here to showcase how bad it is. Maybe if we didn't over pay for our head coaches we would have some damn money to pay our assistants. We pay our head coaches 200K and our assistants chump change. Maybe that's why the power house FCS schools that win are winning. Their head coaches know they can't pay quality assistants if they take all the money.

Hell that's how Broussard got his job. He was not the first choice for AD that was presented to the Board. There will always be a person(s) overseeing the process.
