Southern at Northwestern State

Ok what can SU gain playing SLU, a school that has around 700 folks at their home games. What can SU gain by playing Nicholls, a school that has 800 folks at their home games . What can SU gain by playing Northwestern. I'm waiting. This should be interesting. Why should we give them a recruiting opportunity with our crowd and help fund their programs with our fans, if we are recruiting the same kids.

You need to play some good FCS teams other than Jackson State. .... everything is not about money. It also gives your fans some drivable games.

Well...for starters...you might gain insight into what quality football looks like...why even field a team if you're not going to actually try to be the best??

You play them and beat them and it helps recruit that kid who has those schools on their list that we recruit. When you play them and beat them, they can't say to a recruit that SU don't want to play us or we are better than them.

ULM, ULL, La Tech already have an edge on us because for that kid who just has to be at a FBS level school, they will go to those schools over us, McNeese, NWState, SELA, and Nicholls. I don't mind playing them FBS schools in La every so often but we really are not recruiting against them so to speak. Especially those kids who are already set on playing at the FBS level no matter how low of a level it may be. LOL. Those kids at them schools are the LSU wanna be kids so they have already overlooked the FCS schools in La. I also think we should play the Sam Houston States, Stephen F Austin's every so often as well. If play them and beat them that helps recruiting. Unless SU is thinking FBS level in the future, playing FBS schools every year isn't a good idea.

I ain't worried. Soon we ain't going to be able too with these BCS schools and conferences saying you need strength of schedule to get to these big bowl games. Soon all the FBS conferences are going to stop playing us. Wouldn't be shocked (and I hope) that UGA buys us out of that game coming up.

I know Nicholls and SE don't have fans, but they are FCS. Nobody is saying get in a long term contract with them. Just do a home and home for 2 years and move on to the next one. Do one with McNeese, SELA, NWState and Nicholls. See which one of those is the best matchup long term and maybe play them more often than the others. But we should have a Southland team on our schedule every year unless we get some better offer.

Well I will not go that far. But we need to play schools we recruit against. If we want to gain insight on what quality football is like on the FCS level, we take a trip to ND State or play Sam Houston State, E Washington, etc..

I believe it was said some time ago that SU needed to play opponents that would help to supplement its athletic budget. That is one reason we did not return the game to McNeese. Playing a game at McNeese's Cowboy Stadium with its 17,000 seats would not have benefitted SU at all financially. It was worth it for SU to simply pay them the $60,000 contract exit fee and schedule a game against a FBS school such as ULL for a contract fee of $100,000 plus the revenue generated from the sale of 6000 tickets, in 2009. Northwestern's Turpin Stadium seats only 15,300. SU cannot make money in such a small venue. In the past, NSU could ony promise a return game. But the difference was that SU would put 10,000 butts in Turpin while NSU might at best bring 500 fans to Mumford. So to even the playing field, NSU has agreed to pay SU more than $40,000 to play in Turpin this year, the largest amount it will have ever paid to a FCS opponent. Likewise, ULL will pay SU more than$250,000 to visit Lafayette next year and ULM has offered a similar sum for some future date. These schools have come to realize the financial benefits of playing SU, let alone filling every seat in the house. To grow our athetic prowess and our athletic budget, SU simply has to make every OCC game a profitable venture. With a fanbase the size of SU's, we can afford to be creative in the amount of contractual revenue we demand. Why not use our extraordinary traveling fanbase to our financial benefit?

I would not do a home & home with let them come to Baton Rouge

You know the McNeese folks think they are the stuff now after they beat South Florida. Sam Houston and UCA will have them singing a different tune soon enough.

Why not? We need to play these FCS schools in the state as well. I don't mind playing those FBS level schools for a nice check. Especially ULL since they are so close. But the NW State game does make sense to me. I wouldn't mind playing SE La too since they are close in a home and home.

A big no to a home and home with Southeastern. Their stadium is super small. I don't even think it seats 5000 fans.

We can play, but let them come to BR I would never go to Lake Charles

Didn't they come to Baton Rouge already? That's what home and home is supposed to be like isn't it? You play at my place and I play at yours? Isn't that how it works for most contracts?
