McNair became the Braves' interim coach Saturday after Jay Hopson left to become Southern Miss's new coach. This past season was McNair's third as the program's assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

Like his late brother, Steve, McNair played at Alcorn State (1986–89).

As a coach, he was instrumental in the development of graduating Braves quarterback John Gibbs Jr., the Southwestern Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2014.
