SUJag,
Say you have a credit card and it doesn't charge you interest. All they want is for you to make your purchases through them and pay on time and they will pay you an incentive for using their card. Well, here comes Capital 1 and they want you to make your purchases through them, but before you can make the purchase you have to pay a fee to gain the card and there is an interest fee for everything you purchase. Follow me. Your previous card didn't need all of that. They just wanted you to stay with them and they promise to give you free purchases without any fees as long as you pay on time.
Which card would you prefer?
Some people forgot that the city of Birmingham paid the SWAC for continuing to have the SCG at Legion Field. How many cities do you know of that are willing to do that? The SWAC came up with none other than B'ham.
To be honest, the city of Birmingham has already secured the land for a dome. They have made strides to get it built. I predict that by 2007 (the end of the current contract) the dome will be 1 year from completion and the SWAC will sign a contract with the city of Birmingham pending said completion in time for the 2009 SCG. Then, they will sign a multiple year deal.
If you don't show up, it won't be because of the weather. It will be because you never planned to participate in the first place.
Bad example. In each case, there is some benefit. What is the benefit of playing a game in a city that half of your conference has stated through not coming that they will not come for whatever reason (weather, travel, no interest, etc.)
Fact: I have made the last two trips to B'Ham for this game and froze out there both years.
You mentioned a dome ... well, the SuperDome is supposed to get renovations and so is Veterans Memorial. Are we supposed to use those just because they are getting a better situation like you say B'Ham is?
These are the true facts that no one can deny: Six years in B'Ham (We should say five because the first year was a abornomality) have produced similar results.
-- An Alabama team has been in those five.
-- A Louisiana team has been in those five.
-- The confernce puts on nothing to accompany the game.
-- Less than favorable weather has been the norm, especially the last two years.
-- The conference has tried nothing new.
Now, you answer this. If those two credit cards companies are working for your business, and you tell each one of them what you need to be convinced to become a member of theirs and after FIVE sessions, they still don't get it, what happens to that potential client? THEY try something else and the credit card company numbers are going down constantly (sounds like the SCG, don't it?)
My idea doesn't require huge rent money like some of you think. We have four conference stadiums over 20,000 seats (Alcorn, SU, AAMU, and JSU). I find it hard to believe that these schools would rail the conference for rent money. Then, we utilize several other stadiums that would be adequate with MORE seating and no permanent tenant: Independence Stadium, War Memorial Stadium, and Ladd-Peebles Stadium. I think we could organize any of these stadiums before the season started.
The problem is that the SWAC has LONG be afraid to challenge themselves to do better. Examples: state of SWAC Basketball, state of Eastern Divsion baseball, football decisions, etc.
