SCG played in Jackson MS. ???

This just dawn on me. After the incident in Bham and the question as to why it seems we?ve been playing every championship game in Alabama came up again.

I thought of my number one venue that I?d consider playing the SCG at then realize playing there would contradict my position on a big social issue.

The venue I?m referring to is Veterans memorial and the issue at hand is that dang confederate flag.

This isn?t meant for any type of smack but honest and open discussion. What do you think? Would you want to play there while we condemn others for bringing championship games to other venues across the country because of the very same reason?

Man I love playing at that stadium. :(
 
That's probably one of the biggest reason that it would not be played there. If that flag was pulled down, I would say go for it. But, that ain't gonna happen because jsu continues to play under it every home game. So they wouldn't be even inclined to pull that flag down for the conference.
 



The whole confederate flag thing is overated to me.... I have been to Veterans plenty of times and never even payed attention or even saw the confederate flag. Memorial Stadium would be a good spot for the Championship game, but it would be faced with the same problems weatherwise as Legion Field... but on a sunny day it would be a great spot.

That's a sad comment. But, I guess if you didn't grow up in the era where that flag and what it stood for caused so many to suffer then maybe I could understand. No, I probably still couldn't. What's that saying about not learning from history? I guess slavery is overated, too?

Three points.
1. The Commissioner has already said the SCG contract does not expire until after the 2007 game so we have at least 3 more games in Alabama.
2. I personally would not move our game to a stadium that flies the Confederate flag. If they don't respect us, we should not be giving them our money.
3. We need to find a Dome so the weather won't be a factor (Houston or N.O are the best bets)

My guess is the SWAC will always have one or more events in Birmiongham as long as the SWAC office is getting free office space. NOTHING in the sports world is free and the commish has probably agreed to keep bringing fans to Alabama in exchange for office space. I've noticed that even though the game is not doing good in Alabama, he never talks about moving it lately.
 
If not Jackson, Shreveport would be a nice little spot to consider. Plenty of casinos there too.

First off, Birmingham is horrible. Point Blank!

Secondly, NOBODY COMES TO ANY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. It's too far away for the majority of the schools and the weather is consistently dreadful. The only game in Birmingham (in recent years) with a decent crowd was the football SCG in 1999 (SU vs. JSU). I performed in the pep band at the Swac B-ball Tourney in 2002 and 2005, and the SCG in 2003 and 2004. If SU, JSU, ASU, or AAMU don't play, nobody will be there.

Now, with the whole confederate flag issue, that is bull*****, too! How can we not allow our teams to play a championship game in MS, but we can play one or more regular season games there? That's hypocritical! If they wanna stick to their word, the SWAC shouldn't have even let the MS schools in the d@mn conference due to the flying of the flag.

Blue, I understand where you are coming from! I, myself, am not a proponent for having the SCG played at Memorial Stadium either because of the flag issue. For so long, the confederate flag has symbolized what "most" African-Americans despise---the history of racism, oppression, and hate! :shame:

What's so disheartning about the entire situation, is that Memorial would be a great place to play the game! :tup: Unfortunately, the traditional whites that control Mississippi will still continue to affect what could be positive outcomes for blacks in this state :( by eliminating any possibilites of the removal of that flag! But I guess since Jackson in particular, is black dominant, they don't want to see any good come to the city.

If the city was majority white, and Jackson missed out on some popular events, the flag would be down the next year! :nod2:
 
What we have to realize is the weather has hurt the games a few times. Black folks, outdoor and Dec weather should not even be in the same sentence. Even without the flag, I would not be in favor of Jackson.

This game needs to be in a weather friendly situation (DOME) and a good social city. Jackson lacks both.

You need to check the attendance figures of the SCG before you continue to post stuff like that. Playing a regular season game is different that hosting a conference championship. Please tell me you know the difference. I don't think the conference championship should be held in Jackson. Monroe or Shreveport would be better. Even though we wouldn't have to worry about a home field advantage with the game being held in Jackson, I think the messege needs to continue to be sent about the flag issue.

and the question begs to be asked-----

1. what kind of crowd do you all reasonably expect for the SCG?

even the first one, which was a new event, with Chamber of Commerce weather, the schools with the largest avg. attendance playing, bands from other schools, many neutral fans and the attendance was 47K.
Since then, the attendance has largely been fans of the schools involved

and State Trooper, SCG 3 had 38K and you say this wasn't "decent"? :confused:


as an aside, since this topic comes up ALL the time, it would be interesting to know if the folks who're always shouting that the SCG needs to be moved actually attend the SCG

These are all excellent reasons why we dont need an SCG period. Everyone talks about moving the game, I'm still trying to figure out why we're still having it. It doesn't help the conference as a whole and there's virtually no interest in the game beyond the participants. If you ranked this game among all the BCF classics, it wouldnt even be in the top-15.
 
My 2 and a half cents:

If and when it is moved, a DOME stadium should be the venue. The probability of the weather being bad is pretty high at that time of the year.
 
Who cares about the weather? My people we need to stop worrying about nonsense like this. IMO Football is made to be played outdoors. The fans and the bands need to get over it.

I really don't see why we have a SCG anyway.

Back to the subject at hand. I don't feel quite comfortable with the game being played in a stadium with the confedarate flag is raised. It represents hate, racism, and false hope for us.

To answer your question, I care about the weather (and many others). That is why I made the comment. I do not like sitting in the rain and cold. Of course, I do when my Jags are playing but it is not my preference. Unfortunately many people that made the long trip to B'ham in 2003 stayed in their hotel rooms or left the game early because of the weather. Last year it was relatively o.k. put still no picnic. :lol:
 
It's not a confederate flag. smh. The flag at the stadium is the MISSISSIPPI STATE FLAG..... It's kinda like how Alabama Car Tags have HEART OF DIXIE on them. I wouldn't want that sh*t on my tag...but it's the state tag...what can you do about it. .. .. I smh everytime i see a A&M or ASU tag with "heart of dixie" on it ..celebrating the nickname of the region that was known for racial oppression for years after emancipation.

lol... learn about your own flag even. Most of the old confederate states used designs similar to the confederate flag that they all once used as a show of loyalty even after the war. Alabama's flag was even designed to resemble the old confederate flag. So was Mississippi's.... The confederate design is in the corner of the Mississippi's state flag.... My point... all of our states Miss. Louisiana Alabama Texas Arkansas... have enough racial bullsh*t in their pasts to write thousands of books....none of us are in the position to say we're not going to have it their because of the racial history. lol. Sh*t we'd have to move the championships out of the south.

I say lets move it to Detroit. LOL.

ummm "heart of dixie" isn't on the ASU tag, :scared:
 
How about alternating the game from year to year to have the East/West representative to HOST the championship game. This way you don't have to compete with the high school championship games wrecking the fields.

Outside of a JSU/SU matchup, there is no need for a dome because it will not be many people attending.
