Figured finalized last month show that JMU took in $37,301 on the three games, mostly in ticket sales, but incurred $22,462 in additional costs because of housing and meals for the athletes during the school’s Thanksgiving break.
That translated into a $14,839 profit.
Interesting!!
The SWAC Championship Game (1-game) would have to generate $148,390 in net profits to generate $14,839 for each conference member. To provide the SWAC office the same share and the winner of the championship game double that share, the game would need to generate $178,068 (i.e. a 12-member football conference) in net profits. At $25 dollars a ticket for a championship game, that is 7,123 more in attendance than what it takes to break even based on attendance alone.
Further illustration, for a post-season game between two conferences of 22 football participating members, such a game would have to generate $326,458 in net profits to generate $14,839 for all conference members. To provide the two office the same share and the winner of the championship game triple that share and the loser double that share, the game would need to generate $400,653 in net profits. At $25 dollars a ticket for a bowl game, that is 16,027 more in attendance than what it takes to break even based on attendance alone.
To provide some perspective, the city of Birmingham provide the SWAC with $500,000 a year incentive in keeping the conference headquarters in Birmingham as well as hosting the confernece championship game. One should also note that ESPN is providing contract for participating the MEAC/SWAC Challenge to each team for over $150,000.
