Playoffs -- Round Two

We had both. That was changed with the initiation of the SCG, so the actual profit conversation begins and ends with the economic (hard & soft) of the return to each school for the SCG versus a playoff appearance.

Slightly anyway...but I think we (SWAC) especially and the FCS division in particular missed out on an opportunity to increase our revenue by not voting to have a 12 game schedule as with FBS schools.

Grambling for sure could have benefitted more from an extra regular season game than from either the playoffs or SCG. The SWAC has the 9 game mandate and that's cool and all (especially since it's a done deal) and an extra game would have meant a possible matchup with a regional mid-major in Shreveport similar to next year's game with LaTech.

Perhaps someone can show where we can make more diviing up SCG game revenue between 10 schools makes more $$$ for us than an extra home game or a deal similar to the "possible" game Gram has with LaTech next year.

:retard:
Glad you posted this.

Me too. While it is the first time anyone has ever posted anything positive about the money made from the playoffs, those numbers are still not very good. MEAC schools balk at taking payouts of $100K from classic promoters but are willing to take $15K from the NCAA.

Some people argue that that SWAC has not released a number for how much we make at the SCG...and that is a valid argument but we do know that most of what we get is free. Our expenses are minimal at best. The conference might have to foot the bill for the teams, bands, and banquet which should cost no more than $150K so even on a year that we only attracted 25K fans to legion field at $25 a pop, we made $625K before expenses. Subtract $150K from $625K and you are looking at $50K per school.

I was fine with it.

While the SLC was for the 12-game schedule, I know that FCS plays the most games of any divisions with a playoff system in place. With the forthcoming playoff expansion, which could see a team play as many as 17 games (if there was a 12-game schedule), it was not worth doing.

For the time being, FCS should take a "wait and see" approach.

And would the SWAC have truly benefited? Your league is the only one in the country in which there are teams who do not have the max. allowed games scheduled this year besides the Ivy League (who chooses to compete a 10 game schedule).

I TOTALLY disagreed then and disagree even more now. The 1-A schools should have never even added a 12th game. They choose to play 1-AA schools rather than each other in those match-ups. You have some of them even playing 2 1-AA schools (ie GaTech last year and Rutgers this year). Why can't GaTech and Rutgers play each other? When the FCS schools added the 12th game, it effectively took away 30-40 (if not more) 1-AA match-ups. Look at our schedules now compared to when those 1-A vs 1-AA match-ups counted every year.

They were VERY smart to deny us the 12th game. Now I hope they go back to allowing 1-AA wins to count only every 4 years.

And several week's worth of press...

The SWAC championship game opponents are announced. It goes quiet for what - two weeks, more I guess if the SWAC title game opponents are known even further ahead of time? And then the game is upon us.

There may be some smack talk on TSPN for the lead up, but on the national radar - even the FCS national media radar (i.e. Sports Network, CSN) - the game does not register a blip until right before.

Heck, the voting for some of the major FCS polls opened before SWAC title games in recent years! :shame:

Texas Error, why don't you tell the whole story instead of rambling on with just your side of the ledger?
Why would SU and Grambling give up a million dollar payday? Would they make that much during a playoff game? Why would they give up being on NBC? Is ESPN's or Comcast's audience larger than NBC's?

Why would the SWAC give up the SCG where it averages 35,000 plus fans for a playoff game, a game that'll be lucky to net 15,000 fans, while losing money in the process?
Why give up free national coverage?

Why would Bama State give up their game with Tuskegee, a game that averages around 20,000 plus in attendance? Will a playoff game net more cash in the overall scheme of things?

Now add all of the above numbers together, plus television coverage.
Now compare them with your theory of ONE school from the SWAC participating in one, two or three playoff games....maybe on Comcast or ESPN.

Which would be more profitable?

Cha-ching!!!!!!

Also, we may bash the location of our SWAC offices, but the city of B'ham shows it is behind the SWAC by #1) giving the conf what... a 500K$ yearly incentive to keep the SWAC HQ in B'ham @ a rate of 1$ per year lol and HOST the SCG (and basketball arena for M&W bball) for free. :read: #2) ESPN has joined into the fray and whatever deal ($$$) was announced for televising games is evident as well.

I don't think the SWAC is in too bad a shape (financially) as some would have others and us to believe. :)

The league office may not be - but the schools sure are not putting the money back into athletics. Among the lowest funded Div I schools in the nation.

You guys are making plenty of profit, but where's the money going...??? And even with all that money, just look at what most of your basketball teams are doing in out of conference play. Something isn't right... :noidea:

I could give a rat's nutt what TP or TT agrees with about the 12 game...it would have been good for Grambling and I think good for the league. Just because some AD's are incapable of taking advantage of it doesn't make it a bad option.

Actually, we (this FCS division) allows the NCAA to have too much influence. They decided to create the 1AA division to separate us from the "big boys" to appease the "big boys" who grew so big that some of them said "Screw you NCAA, we'll create the BCS and have our own Bowls that you can't control or influence". The FCS division should have taken the same approach and went with 12 regular season games, assigned conferences whose champions would meet in pre-determined matchups.

The NCAA pimps the FCS division with these playoffs... keep bending over!

To ensure that the Heritage Bowl or Black BCS Title Game is fully successful, the MEAC must be with us every step of the way. Maybe we can rotate the location of the games like the BCS does in FBS football. We already know the game has to be in a dome, and we all know why. How about:

Houston's Reliant Stadium, The Louisiana Superdome, Atlanta's Georgia Dome, and Jacksonville's Alltel Stadium.

The game can take place in the days between the last BCS bowl game and the BCS National Title Game.

The Heritage Bowl is not coming back for the same reason it failed the first time around, lack of interest. The MEAC is a Playoff conference and that is not going to change. The HB will always be suspect because the MEAC will not send its first (and sometimes second) place teams to play. So where is the interest?

Not so fast my friend! (thx Lee Corso) Right click and save my response: The HB will return as a season ending game and what's even funnier is that it's primitively played as the first game of the year as the SWAC-MEAC challenge. :read:

In the playoffs, the teams that have to travel generate zero dollars. In fact, most of them end up losing money. Most home teams barely come out even. A 52,000 dollar profit over three games is a flat out joke.

You SURE about that?

Maybe not be coming back by the same name but some type of SWAC/MEAC Post Season Challenge is being discussed.

HB never failed due to lack of interest

This is not smack! But are you intimating that in light of going 0-19 in the Playoffs, the refusal of Coach Comegy to play PVAM this year (even though JSU has only a 10-game schedule), and the SWAC's inability to win any FCS out-of-conference games in 2008, that the SWAC's reluctance to participate in the Playoffs is because it feels it is not competitive?

Not quite. I believe the SWAC could win a playoff game in the future and was darn close in the past, but the presidents could care less about athletics and they are too scared (of changing status quo) or unwilling to even consider the playoffs especially when there is no financial incentive. The idea that games have to be moved is bogus. The idea that the SCG is a great money generator isn't true. Money and the Bayou Classic date aren't the issues. The president just don't see what the SWAC has to gain. I'll bet few of them ever played sports beyond elementary school, if that. They have no clue what a national championship would mean so why take the risk of dropping to 0-19, 0-20, and 0-21 and make little money while doing it. I see the benefits in recruiting and promotion in winning in the playoffs but they don't and probably never will.

PLUS: COLLEGE FOOTBALL -- HERITAGE BOWL; Game Discontinued After Little Support

The Heritage Bowl, played in Atlanta between two of the predominantly black Division I-AA football conferences, is being discontinued after nine years.

Major reasons were a lack of fan support and the end of a two-year television agreement (1998-1999) between NBC and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Last year's game, in which Hampton of the M.E.A.C. beat Southern University, 24-3, drew 29,000 to the 74,000-seat Georgia Dome

Thats a newspapers opionion and not fact. The FCS Championship never had this many in attendence nor have they ever outdrawn the SWAC Championship. So when are they going to end the FCS championship game.

I've said this on other boards and I'll say it here, the 'Challenge' is a waste of effort and resources. The only people with an interest in this game are the respective schools' fans. It was originally billed as a competition between the winners of each conferences' previous year. The attendance for the first two years in B'ham were 18K and 19K, in a 74K seat stadium.

In 2007, it was decided to junk the previous year's champions and have FAMU and Southern play. Attendance was 29K in a 74K seat stadium. In 2008 the game moves to Orlando with the previous year champions, Hampton and JxnSt. Attendance 10K in a 73K seat (yeah there was a threat of a hurricane).

The point is that if both conferences want this game to work, it should be played on alternating campuses. It would probably be sold out, and the hosting school will be able to showcase its campus and facilites, thereby, hopefully, causing more local fan and community interest and an increase in financial support.

TT,
You can keep posting all this FCS bullisht if you want to. But every one of those Presidents, ADs, and Coaches of all them winning FCS schools all wish they could move up and be like a Troy or Boise State is. It aint no damn glory in FCS. I asked some kids up here in Minnesota and they have no clue to who won the FCS title. But they shole know about the 1A mythical champion and could tell you about the Bayou Classic since it is on NBC.

Let's be real. The FCS playoffs aint doing much for those schools. Their alums and boosters are. The money they make from participating in the playoffs aint paying no bills. What yall don't say is how big some of those FCS schools are in enrollment compared to HBCUs. And Jerry Moore can stop lying that the Michigan win was not more important the winning the NC in FCS. That was the politically correct thing to say. That Michigan win got them more exposure than any title they won and a big arse payday to boot.
He can sell that isht to somebody who actually believes it.

I talked to a coach at U of Minnesota about the FCS plight and even he shook his head. LOL. Pimping at its finest. If this model was so great then the 1A programs would be all over it. I wonder why the playoffs don't matter to them......hmmmmmmm I know. Big money bowl games. The way the FCS is run is a joke. Even though the SWAC aint taking care of business like I would like them too.....that FCS playoffs aint the end all be all either.

Richmond, Montana, App. State all would bolt if they could find the money and resources to do so. Again aint no glory at the FCS level. The top athletes don't give a rats arse about FCS ball until they get snubbed by a 1A program and have to either transfer or they got told they were too small or whatever.

You are right JR. I remember an article about how much money some school lost winning the 1AA championship and that most schools lose money. Just because 1 school made some chump change doesn't change anything. The fact that is was newsworthy to write an article about making 52K total off 3 games tells you something right there. We make over 5 times that on the battle of the bands the night before the Bayou Classic.

Mr. Tiger,
What is the purpose of this? I am asking from the following standpoint. The number 1 reason we don't participate in the playoffs is real simple. Our presidents (all 10, not just 3) don't want to. LET ME REPEAT, THEY DON'T WANT TO. Maybe I wasn't clear. They DON'T WANT TO.

You can try to look up all the rules, bylaws, etc. you want and it doesn't matter. You are worried about the wrong thing at the wrong time if the playoffs are your goal. If you want the playoffs, your first job is to convince your president (of your school) to support it. Right now, they don't. It is that simple. As long as they don't, nothing else matters.

Now why they don't, imho, first it is a money loser, second they rarely bracket the teams fairly, third, the way they have if set up, if it does make money, they NCAA is going to make most of it.

IMHO, the reason the playoff are there is to keep the 1AA out of the Bowl Money of 1A. Most of the 1AA schools do not have a big enough following to support a bowl structure. Think about it. This 1AA crap is only in football (I know they call it FCS now) You can play them in the regular season, but when the Bowl Season (big money time) comes, it's a different story.

Well, Black College football doesn't have that problem, we can support post season games and End of the Season Classics. I would much rather go to Birmingham (even though Birmingham sucks) and watch Southern or Grambling play Jackson St than to go to Butholeville Montana for some meaningless ass playoff game (IMHO the whole playoffs are virtually meaningless, nobody gives a damn about them).

Back when we had the Heratige Bowl, it was listed in most publications with all the rest of the D1A bowls. Damn near if not every year, the SCG has outdrawn the 1AA Championship Game and the Heratige Bowl had a better TV contract also.

Appalation State got 10 times more publicity from beating Michigan than winning them sorry ass playoffs.

Game, Set, Match..........

Heritage Bowl Suspended for 2000
February 10, 2000

ATLANTA - The commissioners of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), along with the Executive Director of the Historically Black Collegiate Coalition (HBCC), announced today that the Heritage Bowl for 2000 would not be played.

The existing agreement, entered into by both leagues and NBC Television in the fall of 1998, was for two years (covering the 1998 and 1999 games) with an exercisable option by either party for subsequent years.

The Heritage Bowl, which is owned by the SWAC & MEAC conferences, will take the time and reevaluate all aspects of the event. including television and marketing rights, and conference structure as It relates to who plays in the game.

The Heritage Bowl has been a showcase for the country's two premiere Historically Black College conferences," said MEAC Commissioner Charles Harris, "Although we are disappointed with the postponement of the 2000 game, we are optimistic about the potential growth of this post-season event"

SWAC Commissioner Rudy Washington explains, "When the concept of the Heritage Bowl was conceived nine years ago, it was an Innovative Idea on the Division I-AA level and its founding fathers are to be commended A lot of work went into making the game a major playmaker in the post-season picture. Unfortunately, local support for the game in the cities that hosted it wasn't substantial enough to merit continuation of the event. Accordingly, we felt that it was in our best interest to discontinue the game at this time.

HBCC Executive Director Craig Cason, whose company has previously marketed the game states, "The timing for this suspension Is right. The committee will take a hard look at every aspect of the event to determinewhat it will take to get It to the next level.
