OLD SCHOOL MUSIC vs. TODAY'S

Are today's singers better than the singers of the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's?
Who's better than Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, The Temtations, The O Jays, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Sam Cooke, James Brown,..................

I don't think that today's singers are necessarily better or worse. I think there are a lot of artists that have great voices but don't get great material. I mean personally I don't think that Michael Jackson has the best voice...but he's a great artist. He writes and he performs. If he had to just depend on the voice he might not have lasted this long. Look at Whitney...great voice but I think they say she's only written a few of her songs.

Today's singers are far worst than yesterday's singers. Hell, Wanya from Boys II Men can outblow ANY male R&B singer that's out today. Any of them!!! The female singers today suck too(literally). That can only explain why half of them have record deals. We had Regina Belle, Anita Baker, Melissa Morgan, Vesta Williams, Chaka Khan, and a whole bunch of other ladies you haven't heard of in a long time. If todays top notch singer is Keysha Cole...then this is a sad moment in R&B history.

Best Album Ever!

Actually I think it's Mary J. Blige but I see your point. Music changes along with time.

Sad to say, but today's kids may consider Mary J old school. Wow...we're getting old.

No contest between Old School vs New School. For every New School artist I can name at least 20 Old School artist who were better.

Re: NO TONY!!!

My alltime favorite band is The SOS Band. That was my very first 8 track...yes...8 track.

The stuff they are playing isn't that great but I can't really say that today's singer are worse or better. I think my taste is just different. I am not feeling this stuff that is being played today but I think alot of that has to do with my age. Juat like my folks weren't feeling the stuff I was listening too when I was younger.
Now a days though, you really don't have the SANG, you just have to have good beat and a nice hook to be a big time seller of music.
MY first 45 was "Human Nature" by MJ.
The best Albums would be:

There are some good singers out there today. My answer depends on what genre you wish to consider.

Gospel: Today's singers are better than old school. Soloists, Quartets, Choirs, ... everything. And that is saying a mouthful when you look at the great lineage of Old School cats.
R&B/Pop: There are some good singers out there... Brian McKnight, Indie.Arie, Alicia Keys. However, they are not nearly as deep as they were in ANY of the previous decades. Back then, EVERYBODY from Luther Vandross to Betty Wright could sing. Now, with so much rap, rhyme, and hooks that go nowhere, singers are much harder to find.
Jazz Singers: Mixed bag
Classical: Same
Jazz Musicians: Same as R&B/Pop. Thankfully we have Marsalis, Redman, Boney James, and Bela Fleck

Donny McClurkin and Yolanda Adams are excellent Gospel singers today!

I disagree with the Gospel. The new school is taking Old School R&B and selling it as Gospel. "Mary Mary" is sampling the Honey Cones "Stick Up" and Kirk Franklin has made a living off Old School R&B.

Good singing, is good singing, and I don't care what era you're in, the voices are the same. Alto, sorpano, baritone, tenor, voice tones haven't changed, and they won't. The thing that's different today, than it was yesterday, is us as the audience.

As an audience, starting with our predecessor's, they, and we demanded good music, today's crowd doesn't demand good, or better music from performers. Why? Because they know they can put anything out there, with a sampled beat, and it will be a hit.

Today's kids are not musicians, they don't take the craft of music seriously, and that's a big reason why the songs today suck. Everything is systhesized on a board, instead of having a band come in, and belt something out, and put together a nice arrangement that goes well with the singer.

In New Orleans for instance, before me, and while I was growing up, just about every kid in the city wanted to be in somebody's band. Being in the band meant something, and you actually had more juice being in the band, than you had playing sports. But today's kid have more options than band, and too much free time, and they are choosing those options.

Teenagers, and children were the backbone's of church choirs, but you go into a church today, and you find very few young people in the choir, and I say that because, if you look at the great singers of our time, and before us; a good majority of those singers honed their skills right there in the church. They had to know how to sing first off, and they gained stage presence by being in front of crowds at early ages, and they also learned how to sing with a group, and with musicians. I just don't see that anymore.

Also, there were a lot of school, and radio talent shows, and I don't see that as much. If you had any kind of chance of making it, you knew you had to bust your arse in those talent shows, because if not, you'd surely get booed off of the stage. You also had to work, because you knew there were people from all over the city that could actually blow, and you just couldn't come out there whining your way through a song.

Let's face it, until we as an audience decide to demand that these performer's know how to sing, and perform, instead of just looking good, and being sexy, we'll continue to get the crap that we're getting now. All that has to be done, is stop purchasing records, and stop requeting radio stations play them.

In reality though, it doesn't matter the genre, rap/hip-hip, R&B, gospel, or neo soul; like today's movies, stuff is just being recycled. There's very little imagination in artistry in today's world, no originality whatsoever, whether it's movies, poetry, television, and music.

NICE

Best album which was overlooked by many:

Excuse the bad English...

They're just puttin' out songs just to be puttin' them out. No quality whatsoever!

Give me some Loose Ends, Con Funk Shun, Bar-Kays or Temptations anyday.

NN...Co-sign...Wanya can blow any of these new cats out on a bad day.

Old school music was about the funk.New school music is about the hip hop flava.

And I agree with Jelli,

Off the Wall was the best album....

I just think you today you really don't have to be a great singer. For example, I remember looking at the BET awards when Gladys Knight sung Midnight Train and it sounded like hte record because in her day you had to be able to sing live. Now days you don't.

NOBODY, today...that's for sure.

How many times can we debate this same issue! Seriously, of course we are going say the old singers are better....we are old. And no matter what you do you are going to always think that your era was the best era. Music, sports, etc.

I cant believe i am saying this but I agree. I that is what I was saying. IT's the same thing with rap. We are going to like the rappers from our time better because it was our time.

I really hate the fact that many of today's artist are not musicians. Where are the garage band groups of today (Tony Toni Tone)?

I think todays singers are just as talented, but the fact that they don't even attempt to use instruments sort of takes the SOUL out of their music.

My teenager even realized that she actually recognize much of the music from the 70's, 80's til now and she realize that much of the music from the early 2000 will never be heard again. The scope of the music put out today won't last 5 years.
