Obama Plans Office on African-American Students

Can't believe some of ya'll are against reparations for the betterment of our community. :shame:

This isn't free Cadillacs with a trunk of cash we're talking about. It's about education and waving debt. :shame:

I don't think reparations like this can be considered a betterment for our community as a whole. Cause if they wipe them out...everyone with them gets wiped out and thus...what has changed? AAs need to be more focused on goals that take them someplace in the long term IMO. We have a bunch of quick fix feel good goals...but seems not to invest in those things that will make a huge difference in our lives and communities over the long haul. Getting rid of student loans..that'll just give folks more money to buy another new car...its not like they will invest it into a 401K...so I'm not for wiping out student loans. Counseling on the front end and helping them look at some other viable options on the front end if they don't want the payment which will be left on the back end. (which by the way the student loan comp is implementing).

The notion that some people want 18-21 year old kids to accrue the equivalent of a mortgage over four or five years before having the ability to even own a house is astounding.

I thought it was just me. :shame: Seriously, I don't understand folks from our generation and the younger generation yelling for reparations. Especially this generation who has more opportunities than anyone. We truly want everything for free. Sad!!!

Co-Sign Cee's statement up there^^^^^^^^

It's disgusting how nobody wants to stand up on this. Especially with Black people. All we got from the civil rights movement were voting rights and equal public treatment. We're still WAY behind in wealth growth...primarily because most of the Black folks who could make a difference with this carry this "I got mine, you get yours" mentality that helps no one but themselves. Can you imagine how we could benefit from 2 or 3 generations of debt free higher education? Forget about scholarships because those are private and limited.

Black people were FORCED to build this country, and we never got what America OWES to us.

wow...so, while you are waiting for these reparations...what are you gonna do in the meanwhile? Just refuse to be educated? Or get smarter about how you fund your education?

This argument kind of reminds of the women and child support issues. "They continue to cry, bad mouth and run behind dudes who won't pay...but who feeds the baby in the meantime? It Starves to death or you get a job. Same here. The options available are: This, this and this...NOT that right now.

I don't know about that got mine/you get yours mentality as much as "you need to be proactive in your life choices and not look for a crutch" mentality. I do hope you are working on/with some people on a great proposal to change the status quo...since you feel so strongly about it

The cost of tuition has gone up more than 4 percent annually, while worker salaries have not jump dramatically at all.

CT,
Are you okay with today's tuition prices?

I'd have to say right now, yes. Do I think that each tuition hike needs to stay in play X number of years before increasing...yes. So with this years rate increases, we should have to stay put until 2017 then a cap on how much to raise.

But no matter the cost, WE/US/Folks with children have to do a better job of educating ourselves/our children on what other resources are out there to fund an education then MAKE THEIR TAILS FILL OUT THE APPLICATIONS!

Pops, minimum wage was 3.85. Get that excuse out of here. Regan killed every program in the world to help folks. Huntsville had no bus system. I walked to work and walked to school everyday. In the rain and cold I walked.

3.85$ per hour? Where they do that at?

It was 3.15$ per hour. :D  Ahhhhhhhhh yes, the good ol' days. Washing dishes in the back of a restaurant @ age 13 getting called "ni.$$er Ricky..." Remember vividly like it was yesterday. What a great learning experience and teacher for self to seek betterment and master the "game." :read:

Hard work can AND will always pay off in the end. I'm a testifying witness, along w/ numerous others.

We are way behind because we choose to be.

When we have black folks trying/doing something outside of sports & rapping-we trash them and won't support them.

When WE steal money from our people we don't get rid but we PROTECT them. We just had a situation where a person was caught for the 5th time abusing state funds-yet won't get touched because they are black.

When POOKIE gets shot and/or arrested everybody comes running to defend them, Donald who behaves and needs help get the middle finger.

We come running to defend jocks even to the point of going after whoever it is that busted them for breaking whatever rules.

A check won't solve all this mess but folk looking in the mirror and getting themselves right.

What good is that check clearing your debt and you RUN to buy more stuff to showoff for loser who don't care for you?

We want more money? How about STOP investing in the court system? We have no issue taking our kids to court 50 times a year. Probation? Truancy?
