Locked in a tough re-election battle with Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama aimed to energize his core supporters – African American voters – by delivering a rousing speech and unveiling a new executive order at the Urban League’s annual convention in New Orleans Wednesday night.

The president told the largely African American crowd of roughly 3,700 people that the executive order will seek to improve educational achievement for African Americans at all levels “so every child has greater access to a complete and competitive education from the time they’re born to the time, all through the time they get a careerâ€￾ the president said to cheers.

An administration official tells NBC News the order will create a new White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African-Americans that will “work across Federal agencies and with partners and communities nationwide to produce a more effective continuum of education programs for African American students.â€￾

I don't want to hear this s#!t unless the U.S. Gov is preparing to use this as some form of reparations (as in FREE college education for Blacks).

So let's see. There were some of "US" saying before this that he (Obama) wasn't doing enough for "US". Now that this is done some of "US" still want to complain saying it ain't enough?

:smh:

I thought it was just me. :shame: Seriously, I don't understand folks from our generation and the younger generation yelling for reparations. Especially this generation who has more opportunities than anyone. We truly want everything for free. Sad!!!

Now you know WE are never satisfied! We complain about everything. :smh:

The buzz around work is trying to figure who is going to run it and how will it be staffed. I tend to stay away from K12 issues but if it was a promotion, I might consider it. It didn't come with any money so it will be staffed from existing personnel I believe.

Here is an interesting tidbit. Originally, Obama wanted to expand the HBCU office here to include majority black Elementary and Secondary schools but the HBCU Presidents came out against it. This is the end result.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ronald Mason name floated either. He did lead the black male education initiative for the Administration.

 A black student can go to college for "free" if they apply themselves, get the grades and look for the money/scholarship.

But I'm not all jumping for joy simply b/c an office is planned. It is election year soooo....

I would like to hear more details, see some movement before I high-five him on this.

They signed the order already. It is law now but like you said, who would take on a job in August, knowing they could be out of work in January? It would have to be someone already workin in the administration, gov or someone looking to make a splash.

1st, let me say this: I applaud Pres Obama for finally acknowledging that Black people exist. This initiative could lead to even better opportunities for our children.

But let me also say this: We built this country from the ground up, and were put at a terrible disadvantage that still affects us to this day. America OWES Black people more than some flaky election year initiatives.

Do we have more opportunities than ever before? Absolutely. Is it "enough?" HELL NO. Not even close.

It seems evident to me that many of "us" have bought into this "forget about slavery" ideology that your MASTERS have jammed down your throats.

Wake up.

2kool,
This is not an election year initiative. This was proposed back in 2009 actually. They wanted to expand the HBCU office to include Black school districts. They wanted an office that focused on a K-16 AA student pipeline.

And yet, most of those same kids will go to college and take on a load of debt that they shouldn't have to pay.

If these kids wanna get economic power, stop running the ball and shooting it for those other schools. Come on back to their own and bring the money back.

I get a bit angered at folks always crying about student loans...because you know what? A LOT of folks can get more aid where they can forego student loans...but they don't apply themselves or apply for what's out there. I know, y'all gonna come back with the lack of exposure/don't know/blah, blah, bullshit. Now if they know every damn rap song...they need to figure out how to help their own selves in this arena too. There are scholarship/grants/workstudy...loans are just EASIER. Now I went to college on a full scholarship and kept it. I know folks that got full schollys then lost them partying....and took out loans. They are bytching about those loans still...when it was THEIR fault, THEIR choices that caused them.

Shid...life ain't free. WE don't make really good choices and then its ---> their fault.

I have posted scholarships/grants from drug companies on my academic wall....ask me how many kids apply? NONE. Too many hoops to jump through for them. Lack of initiative is rampant and we need to quit acting like we have noresponsibility and are not the captains of our own destinies.

I paid for my degrees cash by working. Did not ask anyone for nothing. Just worked and paid for them. Nothing in life is free.

And these kids "need to take the summer off to get my mind right" and don't have the first dollar for their education. What bullschatt is this?

That's very commendable...but let me address the word "free."

Last I checked, we've already paid for more that we've received, sir...

Let me post the formula once again:

Cee, You're exactly right. Nothing is free. But Blacks shouldn't have to pay for college. Their "scholarship" should be in the form of the U.S. Government providing their funding and/or reimbursing those who have already took out loans. It's the least they could do.

Remember the line from Uptown Saturday Night? "Never have so few owed so much to so many."

A person who doesn't have a job and would be willing to work up until January. It is better than not having a job a all.

BAM! Folks don't know how to survive. It amazes me at the number of broke, unemployed people with all these criterias...and they are BROKE! Damn get the job, add it to your resume and why did you leave, JOB ENDED or TEMPORARY. It ain't that hard...but if it doesn't come EXACTLY like they imagined/want====> BYE!

Guess being a bagperson is a better choice...they'll have their criterias in tact though....

This generation should be labeled as the "Give me or Free handout" generation. Someone lied to them and told them the world owes them something.

the type of person they would bring in this role more than likely has options. They are not about to hire Johnny off the corner bruh. It won't be as easy as you think. Personally, I think they should let the guy who runs the HBCU office run both of them.

CT,
Come on. You people in Academia are raise tuition without any concerns because you don't compete in a real market place. If the federal government stopped providing Student loans or at least got more restrictive, I bet schools would think twice about raising tuition. They wouldn't need a new student center.

I hope like hell not.
