New Orleans HS's Vs. Atlanta HS's

Ha! Are you kidding me, ATL would win that by a landslide, hands down. Don't get me wrong, N.O. has some nice bands, well i should say one band, because the only major band down there that i know of is The Marching 100, of St. Augustine. There band was the truth back in 1991 I believe when I first saw them in a parade. There were huge in numbers and the sound was amazing, but within the last year or so, the band has shrinked. I don't know but i am suspecting because of Hurricane Katrina, alot of students probably were relocated.

The ATL bands are legendary, Southwest Dekalb, Stephenson, Redan, need i say more.

Pre-Katrina-N.O. by a landslide ( You wanna talk legendary??? St. Aug, Kennedy, Mac 35, John Mac, St. Mary's)

Post Katrina-ATL by a landslide.

If you compare the N.O. in it's prime to ATL in its prime there is no comparison. The N.O. gave ATL the blueprint.

Dude stop lying. Now I don't know about the late 90's but if you go back to the 80-91 yall weren't jack. Man St. Augustine got blew back to NO by the one and only BTW at MLK parade 85,86 and I ithnk they were there in 87. Also those fake BTW folks in NO found out the hard way on Bourbon Street that we don't play. :emlaugh: We even blew them out at SU's homecoming in Fall 85.

Uh what HS is that Cee? I was in the Juke back then........I sincerely do not believe ATL bands as a whole could mess with New Orleans HS bands in the early to mid 80s. 35, Kennedy, St. Aug, John Mac, Fortier and others were a force. That's who populated the Juke back then. Not to mention the Houston High Schools during that time period were monsters. Forest Brook, Smiley, etc....

Seems like the 90s came and the ATL bands stepped up their game overall. Not saying there were no good HS bands in Atlanta in the 80s. But not in the numbers that the NO had back then.

Now in the 2000s and since Katrina......and even maybe a little before Katrina, I can see ATL and their suburb HS bands being better overall than New Orleans. More money is probably being spent in the music programs out there than it was in the N.O.

It sounds like you are speaking only from the schools you know. Come on now... what justification is that? (Thats who populated the Juke)... does that make a justification for the argument?.... Im sure people from FAMU and many other colleges during that same 80s era could say the same thing about the ATL schools.

Keep in mind its somebody from ATL in probably EVERY HBCU band... and ATL runs ALOT of different HBCU bands

Dude my frat bruhs and sorors who pledged at FAMU from New Orleans (35 HS) got over there and took over in the late 80s.

Unlike most of yall schools. SU saw FAMU back then. So I knew the makeup over there. The ATL kids were not running the 100 in the 80s like they have in the 90s and 2000's. I just know what kind of musicians we had that went to play professionally from those NO HS. Same for Houston. My boys who were from the ATL HS(like Mays and Douglass) that went to SU would tell you the same. Stephenson was not even a thought back in the early 80s. Neither was Redan, or most of those suburban ATL schools. Those schools rose up in the 90s as the black folks moved out to Stone Mountain, DeKalb county and such. The pure inside the city limit ATL HS bands were okay........not on NO Level in 80-90. Doc would see tapes of them HS in Atlanta and shake his head back in the day.

BTW, JSU had some cats from New Orleans as well back then that could roll. So did TxSU in the mid 80s. They had a slew of New Orleans talent back then. So it wasn't just the Juke. I reference the Juke because we were a top band back then that was full of N.O. talent with nobody in the band from Atlanta. FAMU was primarily Florida HS kids.

The Juke has had more kids come from the ATL and that area since the 90s and the 2000s. We got a bunch now. Back in the 80s........zilch. I don't remember the Boom being full of ATL kids either. Gram or TxSU.

So they all must have went to Bama State, AAMU and Tn State.

PSI Snake where you at Frat.......you and Lovejoy should be able to answer that. Yall almost as old as me. Where there a bunch of you ATLiens in H'ville in the late 80s?

Now yes. Back then no. I remember SWD came to the N.O. in the 90's for a BOTB's and got thrashed by St. Aug. As a matter of fact I'd put St. Mary's (an all girls school) in their prime up against SWD at full strength and I guarantee you that SWD would've went home with their feelings hurt.

I think Fam has always been more populated with Miami Students. And Didn't SWD turn showstyle(black) in like the early mid 90's ? how is that legandary?

But I'd say NOLA. More history, more heart, IMO.

outta all my CBs/CSs and folk that came in after me, NO peeps were better players and leaders...
in 03 every section that had someone from NO in it, had a N.O. Crab Section leader...

I think you are correct. When we would meet up with the FAMU KKPSI bruhs back then, they were from everywhere but the ATL for the most part. In 86, when they came to BR.......they had about 50 plus PSI in the band and most were from FLorida and some from up North believe or not. Detroit and Chicago used to send some kids to HBCU bands back in the day as well.

I'am from the ATL and I'll tell you like this ATL bands don't have anything on those bands from N.O. unless your talkin about mid 90's when you had Cedar Grove Southwest Dekalb,Mcnair And Mays highschool on the seen especially Cedar Grove... I had the pleasure of taking on St.Augustine,Kennedy,Reed,Easton and 35 we also got down at the Southern University Botb's in 1998 what a night to remember.

JR , I went to Booker T washington with Mike Herndon and Charlie Mac them Bama St boys. Ask them I raised them boys. but Snake will tell you Atl bands were better in the 80's than in the 90's. Not saying N.O. bands were sorry they just wasn't ready for us. DJ Video guy has tapes of BTW. We always brought that fire. We were on FAMU style and we basically sent a pipe line down thru there. No disrespect but SU and JSU bands didn't realy get that much pub in the ATL doing that time. FAMU,Tn ST, Bama St and Morris Brown bands were the most popular. SW Dekalb would not even have been a top band during me and Snake days. They stil don't get respect from older head Atl band members. Might as fact the guys who put SW Dekalb band on the map are good friends of mines.

The thing about the ATL there was a variety of different styles of bands you had some that marched like Su,Famu,Jsu,Mbc,and Tsu

You must be a youngster. Those schools either were 90% white or like Mcnair didn't exist when Snake and I were in highschool. Mcnair was Walker High in 80's and you said Mays was good. :lmao: That right there tells me you are young. Like I said I don't know anything about Atl bands now because my ear was during the 80's, but back then we were on a different level.

yea in the 80's. unless you thawt he was talkin bout the 80's then I'll agree with him on Ceder Groove...lil bastids was on it in the mid-late 90s

Yeah they were corp style in the 80's. My cousin MC Shy D went to Cedar Grove during that time. I'm old school man.

Yea New Orleans HS Bands took a serious hit after Katrina, but the pride is still there. (the Funk & Power too)

N.O. is where it all started and it will continue. (we are born with it in us)

I've seen ATL bands and I'm not impress at all.

N.O. Bands like St. Aug, Walker, McD #35, and others can still compete even though they are all in recovery stage.

Note: as a matter a fact, didn't Walker go to ATL last year and wreck shop.

Put ATL best 3 Bands against N.O. best 3 Bands and lets see what happens.

Go Figure!!!!

LOL yea I'm youngin but I've done all my studying on the old school I'll post some clips when I get a chance I just got my hands on the 1983 Atlanta Public Schools Band Festival at Lakewood... you know the trip thing about it is most of those schools don't even exist anymore
