MVSU "Mean Green Marching Machine" Invited to Perform at the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade

‘Ask Elon and the Other Billionaires to Pay’: Mississippi Valley State Band Faces Swift Backlash After Asking for $350K in Donations to Perform at Donald Trump’s Inauguration Parade

The Mississippi Valley State University marching band is under fire from HBCU supporters on social media for requesting donations to fund a trip to the nation’s capitol next month after being invited to perform in Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration Parade.

Reports say Trump personally invited the “Mean Green Marching Machine” to perform in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20, when he will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. However, the president-elect didn’t send any money to help with the travel costs, food, gas or hotel stay.

Still, the school shared the exciting news on social media, with Dr. Jerryl Briggs, president of Mississippi Valley State, saying, “This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi. It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community.”

The engagement might have gone unnoticed if not for the band’s appeal for $350,000 in public donations, which ignited a firestorm of criticism online, with many calling the fundraiser “thirsty” and asking why Trump isn’t footing the bill himself if the band’s attendance at the event is so important to him.

“Help us raise 350k to go??” Yall don’t even have the money to go lol He’s not paying y’all?? Are y’all slow?? I have so many questions,” one person wrote on Instagram, echoing the backlash.

“Ask Elon and the other billionaires to pay. Why did the incoming admin invite them but not offer to cover all the expenses?” another said.

I think the overall response is “get someone else to… do it,” another person wrote.

Many expressed surprise at the band’s willingness to support Trump, citing his policies against teaching Black history in schools and eliminating diversity programs.

“A black school endorses a man that doesn’t want Black history in schools,” someone else said. “Wants to take away funding of HBCU but go off. SMH.”

Others called out Briggs and the band director for accepting Trump’s invitation, saying, “We don’t have to say yes to everything.”

After two days, the GoFundMe has raised just $1,285, but as of Monday morning, the band has raised over $45,000. The current goal is set at $70,000.

People really using this as an opportunity to sh!t on Valley. Folks being elitist and acting like they are for the culture.
Or, just people that actually believe in standing for something lol. I know that doesn't matter to some of yall.

Social Media is gonna SOCIAL MEDIA as usual.😒;)
MVSU band will be just fine after returning from marching in TurdBrain's inauguration parade.
We will carry on as usual....
So you're fine with it then? I better not see none of yall crying about FAFSA at HBCU's next year when he kills off the Department of Education. Considering how many black kids rely on it to fund schooling...no big deal right? How many are going to be able to get their own private loans to pay for an education? Some of yall are embarrassing.

Hell it was on every black radio station this morning lol. But some folks want to convince you it's not a big deal. These the people that listen to dudes like Umar and Tariq Nasheed.

I am not a fan of them doing inauguration. However, I get that its the decision of a few people and not the multitude. Also, I think its a valley issue and I see way too many non-valley peeps (including from my own school) too heavily invested when they wouldn't doing anything to support Valley themselves.

That's the crazy thing about all of this

It's fellow SWAC alums PUBLICLY going in on Valley. I expect this from non-HBCU alums using this situation with no vested interest in Valley or HBCUs for clicks but it's another thing to see SWAC alums doing so especially after many of these same alums were just shilling for a Brahman Indian/Hindu/Irish woman cosplaying as a black woman with a long history of anti-blackness

Just as it died out with Talladega so will it with you all. Social media is a haven for piling on and fake outrage at times.

When the next thing comes around to pile on and play upset the same types will be piling on then.

It is a big deal. When it's for the person who is putting folks in charge who will do EVERYTHING in their power to hurt the school (and all schools to be exact).

Folks forget what the department of education does for schools and students. If it goes-so do a lot of those kids and funding.

Are you ninjas in here really comparing George Bush to Trump 😂 now that is some sick self hate shyt. 😂 Yes Bush 1 and 2 along with Regan will burn in hell like they deserve but Trump is the lowest piece of shyt to ever be President and his black supporters are the worst shyt on earth who deserves to be black balled from the African American community. By the way I no way support the fake WMD war Bush started but let's be real those Arabics in Iraq and Afghanistan think lower of black Americans than the KKK. They'd chop your head off and hit you up the rectums like they do their own sons. 😂 Valley Band director is a clown. I wouldn't give them dust off the floor to March for Trump. This is no honor. It's c**n mentality.

An one more thing for the road. If Valley can raise $350k to go March in a dam parade for ignorant Trump why aren't they doing the same thing for the athletic department? You trying to raise money in a few weeks for marching for a racist and let these kids compete week after week without support. Make that make sense! I'm a big fan of Valley and root for them but the math and common sense ain't on this one!

IT AIN"T JUST TRUMP SUPPORTERS! JUST SO YOU KNOW! SEE THROUGH THE LIMO TINT! LOL
Imagine being from Mississippi of all places as an HBCU and actually supporting this lol. The funniest part is the folks in here talking about "fake" outrage. Honest question, what exactly DO ya'll give a damn about???? I Just can't fathom how seeing this as a good thing makes sense. These the folks Harriet Tubman was talking about when she said she could've saved more folks if they knew they were slaves. Marching for your own students to lose financial aid is wild.

 IF thats what YOU got out of what I said.....then good for you...thats not what I said. But, carry on.

It is fake, after Valley does their march down Pennsylvania Avenue people will move on to the next thing. The only thing that has made since in this whole thread is the question why would Valley raise money for this when they have need to raise money for other things.

Honest question for you, what makes you think financial aid is going anywhere when the majority of white students are on it also? What makes you think it is going somewhere when financial aid existed before the creation of the Department of Education(DOE)? The same aid existed in what formally was the Department of Health Education & Welfare (DHEW) prior to Jimmy Carter begrudgingly creating the DOE. That same DHEW is now the Department of Health and Human Services.

Do you even understand the opposition politics behind the abolishment of the DOE? Since it is obvious you don't, I'll tell you. It has served and been used as a wedge issue from the moment of its inception by republicans just because democrats created it, more recently the body of laws and policies germaine to it are a hindrance to school choice advocates that want to get their hands on tax payer money to fund private schools and even more recently to fund the creation of more private, white supremacists, christian nationalist schools and institutions.

Piling in on Valley is small time. That parade will be over soon and relegated to historical insignificance, but the white supremacists christian nationalist aren't going anywhere. In life you have to pick your battles; understand what the big picture is, because war is constant.

As for Sister Tubman, what she was saying is she couldn't get some of them to see the big picture because there minds were sadly conditioned to think small, their spirits where broken and their will had been crushed. She was was not looking down on them, she was sorry their mental condition prevented her from rescuing even more.them.

I think the bigger question is - what happens if they DON'T go?

How do you think the mainstream media will spin it, if MVSU refuses to participate in the Parade? How will "they" frame it?

Any political or social fallout will only hurt MVSU, and our HBCUs, because we'll all get lumped in there together.
