Memorial Stadium: JULY 1, 2011

If the scalpers paid the face value of the tickets I don't have a problem with it, I have seen with my eye people not paying face value at the ACC window.

There are scalpers in and around most venues to begin with. Those same people buying tickets will pay for parking and will also visit the concession stand as well. You can't win 'em all.

Which FCS school owns the largest stadium?

I'm very optimistic about this opportunity. Great things are in store for Jackson State University.
Yale...........65,000 seater.

This is the part I like. "Jackson State University shall seek appropriate state funding through the Department of Finance and Administration for completion by the Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property for all expenses incident to the necessary safety, repairs and renovations as determined by the Department of Finance and Administration to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium."

In other words, JSU is not totally responsible for footing the bill for repairs and upkeep of the stadium.

That's why I highlighted that section. That verbaige will allow jsu to repair/renovate the stadium out of your states capital outlay budget. The good thing is, it will become law on July 1, 2011.

....I'm laughing inside at the fact that JSU will finally get its on-campus stadium when you really look at this situation. JSU has three years to return the stadium back to the State. Now let's be honest, things haven't exactly been looking up for the JSU Football Team lately has it? All the off-season drama might fold over unto the football field. If JSU has a losing team, we all know that JSU fans will not fill up the stadium. No JSU fans in adequate number for a big Memorial crowd = less revenue to cover expenses. The State will see this and will want the stadium back for expansion of UMC...but JSU can hold the stadium hostage during that the time to make the State fund them their own Stadium on campus.

JSU Fans, I have a question for you...Have you guys considered talking with the City of Jackson in tearing down the old and broken down MetroCenter Mall on HWY 80 to possibly build your stadium there if there is no place on campus? Just a Thought.

1. JSU will not a losing season this fall so the stadium will have great crowds.

2. JSU and Dr. Meyers wants an on campus stadium so you can forget about Metrocenter Mall or anywhere else on Highway 80.

I thought "the goal" was a new on-campus stadium.

It is.
That has never changed.

UMC wanted the land outside of the stadium and the stadium parking lot so they could start building in those areas. They could not do that with DFA owning the whole thing. The state know JSU can't go without a stadium so the put the stadium and parking lot in our control and turned the land surrounding that area over to UMC.

DFA is the largest Department in the State of Mississippi. Their hands touch everything that involves the state of Mississippi. They never really wanted the job of looking over Memorial but they had no choice when the stadium commission was abolished. All funds for Memorial has always come through the Department of Finance, DFA, and then routed to what was then the Stadium Commission.

I know that scalpers are around most venues, but where are they getting tickets that they can sell below face value. My experience has been seeing scalpers trying to sells tickets above face value before the start of the event and only lowering the price after the event has started.

JSU has three years to return the stadium back to the State.
and do what/play where, at that point. And during this 3 year period, who is paying to maintain it?

again, if the goal is an on-campus stadium, it seems this delays it, for awhile.

Look beyond the surface.....

carry on and hope it works out

If no stadium is built, we still play in Memorial.
That 3 year clause is our "ownership out" clause if any monster debt or monumental repair jobs should arise that they failed to mention before turning it over to us.

Basically the same ole same ole people.
We will try this deal but in the end, when it is all said and done, JSU can aford to wait them out.
Them being UMC and The State of Mississippi.

It's not mandatory to return the stadium to the state in 3 year. Hopefully during the 3 years somehow a plan will come into fruition for an on campus stadium; if not we'll continue to play in Veteran.

Uhhh, MH, those questions have already been answered. With all the redtape now gone, UMC can actually negotiate with JSU to assist with stadium funding if they desire the land bad enough.

Why would JSU return the stadium back to the state when the state is responsible for it's upkeep finances?

That's a tall order. Even if you have the most competent of adminitrations at the helm. But I sure hope so, myself.

I wouldn't count on JSU being able to afford to wait them out. The stadium is old and the costs are going to mount.

I think it would be a good idea for JSU to be in negotiations with UMC to buy the stadium as quickly as possible.

MH every state has a division, department or agency in the governor's office that actually runs the day to day operations of the state on behalf of the governor.

SUJagFan, did you read this part of the clause?

"Jackson State University shall seek appropriate state funding through the Department of Finance and Administration for completion by the Bureau of Building, Grounds and Real Property for all expenses incident to the necessary safety, repairs and renovations as determined by the Department of Finance and Administration to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium."

I did.

There are costs associated with running a stadium other than maintenance and repairs. Those cost may be lower in a new stadium on campus, so there is an opportunity cost as well.

That is what this deal allows us to do.
All this is a real world fact finding thing for JSU.

IT ALLOWS JSU TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT IT TAKES AND WHAT IS INVOLVED IN RUNNING AND TAKING CARE OF A FOOTBALL STADIUM.

How many employees it take on game day.......Concessions, parking, bathroom, lighting, water, press, teams, locker-rooms, medical staff, security.

Home many employees it take for day to day maintainence...............Turf, keeping the field painted, cleaning after the games, etc.

How much money will be needed to pay employees.
How much money need to be generated for X amount of people comming into the stadium.
What kind of events and how to schedule those other events outside of football.......What kind of money will that bring in.
What to do during the idol spring and summer months to generate revenue.

What would be the impetus to plan, or should I say, fund a new on-campus stadium, if they have just given you one?

Maybe you are missing it.

Ole Miss wants the land that the stadium sits on so the Medical School/Ole Miss want Memorial torn down so they can expand. Such an expansion would bring in millions to Ole Miss and the State. It is in everyone's best interest to tear Memorial down but one thing stands in the way: JSU football.

They have two options:

1. Tear down Memorial and leave JSU football with nowhere to play; or,
2. Strike a deal where Memorial will be torn down and the land given to Ole Miss and build JSU a stadium on campus.

Mississippi will never enact #1 unless they want a race riot!

We already know how this is going to go down. We already know where our stadium is going to be. The state gave us some land behind campus to build it last year but I am not sure if that is enough land. They may need to acquire some more parcels from some people who are not yet willing to sell or property from owners they can't find. From my understanding, this deal was worked out years ago by Mason. The battle won't be with getting a stadium. I think that's in the bag. The battle will be how big and how much. They could easily railroad and give us an 30K bleacher stadium like Norfolk State has. :smh:.

That's the problem. If JSU doesn't have an idea of what those costs are now along with expected revenues, then the likelihood of this venture being profitable is slim.

That's why I think JSU needs to put a FOR SALE sign on it on July 2, 2011.

You all don't have several years to figure it out and try to wait other people out. Mess around and get it wrong a couple of years and end up selling it at a distressed price.
