Melvin Spears one of the finalist for the FAMU Head Coaching Job

If I was FAMU, the only staff in the SWAC I would be interested in would be at MVSU...the rest does little with much!

Mike:

I am not big on HBCU coaches. They expect too high a salary just to beat other HBCUs. I don't care if it is regular season or playoffs. For well over $200k, I expect a program that is ranked on a regular basis. 1999 seems like forever, but that was the recent apex. SU ranked #1 in FCS coming to Bragg to face a ranked FAMU team. A&T wins the conference and we advance with an at large bid.

Folks were glad SU wasn't in the playoffs cause they were respected and feared.

Paying what we pay now to fumble around with D2 teams is damn near criminal.

Man the good ole days. Cliff I am in agreement with you on that. Then the HBCU talented coaches we could have, we let get away to the FBS schools or NFL.

I look at Leslie Frazier (Alcorn grad) Maybe had someone given him a shot early he would have coached at our schools.
Pep Hamilton (Howard) on Stanford's staff
Vincent Brown (Valley) on staff at Richmond and followed Mike London over to UVA.
Calvin McGee (SU) OC at Arizona and been following Rich Rod everywhere after South Florida hired him early on as a position coach when they started playing football.

We wait until they get out of our reach then want them to come coach us.

But you shole is right about us overpaying. That's why I aint mad with SU hiring Big Worm at his salary of 140K which ain't nothing to sneeze at when you trying to prove yourself worthy of being a head coach. No reason we should be paying 200K or more for a Head Coach.

Please don't fire me. I was just bullshittin. I tried to do like ole boy did at Bethune Cookman...but I wasn't really trying to go anywhere. See what had happened was....:emlaugh:

Well wasn't JSU's current President at Norfolk State when Comegy backed out of that deal and returned to TU? She may have seen enough.

People always ask that, it's been 10 years since Comegy pulled that stunt. Dr. Meyers wasn't at Norfolk then.

You were right on till you got to the end. We need to start looking at osme of these young coaches early. Tee Martin was a candidate for our OC back in 2009 when we hired Wilson. Now he's a hot prospect and way out of our range. It wouldn't hurt to keep tabs on some of our younger guys like Jerry Mack.

But, I still say yall screwed up with Odums, especially @140K. You're against overpaying a coach - is there another team in this universe that would pay Odums even close to 100K?

Why are you so hard on Odums. You just said give a young cat a chance. Well SU is giving Odums who actually got kudos from Clemson's head coach last week as a guy that should do well. He won some games last year and he lost some close ones. We will see if he can improve as a head coach. He has 2 year contract to show that. Nothing is wrong with what

Bruh why do you think Jones hasn't gotten a new contract and his expired two or three years ago. He pimped himself. He didn't produce so he got what he got. If he won 8 games he got automatically extended a year. he just knew he would win a title with that sorry TE QB he had. Egg is on his face. :emlaugh: He has to win this year with losing 22 seniors. Talking about being dumb.......

You can't de-value the job though Jayrob. If you go too low, folks will think you never want to pay. So 140K is about right.
