JSU To Play In Baton Rouge Regionals

SU was tied with the #1 team in the country with under 2 minutes to play, in basketball. What are you talking about. The conference had a decent OC seasons with two victories over SEC foe. SU beat Texas a&m and AAMU beat Miss state.

Is this the normal occurrence in the SWAC?

For one being more competitive in OOC play Im not speaking of one year when SU beat USM in a Regional Tournament...It would be better if we can stop using the morale victories thats all Im saying!

I agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying. We seem to be happy with being the little guy that upset the big guy once or twice. SU should have been to a few College World Series by now with all of the talent that has passed though.

I tell everybody that SU 2003 team my freshman year with R.Weeks was a beast all around maybe not CWS but they should have made more noise than a ULL squad..But teams like those dont happen often...Even with Coach Johnson he has had some really good teams that didnt win the SWAC...I just dont see it with this years squad mainly from a pitching....no hate just saying..

It may not be a normal occurrence, but SWAC basketball does seen to be changing for the better. Consider the seasons SU and Valley have had recently. Consider the recruiting classes several schools signed this year. Maybe it's just me, but I can see the SWAC becoming more competitive in basketball over the next few years if they continue on the path they are on.

Baseball is a different animal. Black kids in general don't play baseball like they did in the past. The more talented youths seem to focus on football or basketball which makes the talent pool for the Black baseball player very shallow. It'll be more difficult to become competitive that way. The only other resort is to recruit white and Hispanic players. Many of which wouldn't be at HBCUs if they had the talent to play elsewhere.

SU's 2001 and 2002 team might have better than 2003. Mike Woods was on the 01 squad and Fred Lewis was on the 02 squad, was suppose to play in 01 but was redshirted. I think he was involved in a car accident. SU had the arms but didnt have the pitching coach they needed. What put 03 over the top was Dewan Day was dominating his senior year.

Yep I went to every home game for that 03 team. Unreal and talking to a lot of folks we've had some just as good or better in the past. Hopefully our schools start to invest in these sports because IMO we can win. SU, JSU, Bama St, Alcorn, TxSU all have big time potential. Folks act like LSU has been a powerhouse for a long time. LSU's baseball program was garbage until Skip Bertman came there in the 80's. In Louisiana you had UNO and SU making noise and also GSU then Bertman came along.

Yep I went to the 01 and 02 games too. I heard that there were better squads than those on the yard.

And that maybe the big reason why SWAC baseball wont be as good as it can because of the investment into that sport...But Johnson has done alot for JSU considering who was HC before him...And Bama St seems to be making some noise too...Jus tired of these blowout loses to schools like Central Arkansas those are the programs we should be legitimately competing against...Im not counting SEC schools (SEC and ACC are the big leagues of college baseball)..

You welcome..

That's fair.

Pitching depth. That's the only thing that really separates the SWAC for everyone else.

Your coach was the idiot that let him pitching 9 innings one game and sent him right back out there to start the next game :smh: . Damn shame. Don't blame the kid for transferring to a better program :) . If he would have stayed, Salters would have destroyed that kids arm .

Hmmm. You may have a point there. Pitching depth just may be the major factor.

However, over the last week or so I've been reading the message boards of teams who were worried about getting a host site (Arkansas). Worried about getting in the tournament at all (aTm). Reading what they felt about their teams. Defense and hitting comes up a lot too. Errors. Double plays. Batting averages. Slugging percentages. It seems that folks always feel their team is lacking something to make a real run at a national championship.

Pitching depth may make up a huge part of the gap, but I'm not sure it's the only thing missing. Of course, what else Is missing may vary from team to team.

That's all SU was missing from 99-04. From 02-04 SU had 24 players drafted, tied with Cal St Fullerton for most in the country.

You keep bringing up SU though. What other SWAC school can say that? That was an anomaly when you consider the entire conference. I'm thinking other schools may be missing more than pitching depth although I do agree that it is a major component. The major missing component.

The key to going deep in the tournament is pitching and defense. That's where the SWAC usually falters in the NCAAs. The best SWAC teams have one or two really good hurlers. The LSUs, Texas', Rices, Cal-State Fullertons of the world have an array of those pitchers - at least depth in the starting rotation.

JSU will probably not see LSU's best pitcher in the opener. They will save that guy for the next game. Jackson State can't afford to do that because they lack depth. That's the difference between the SWAC and the traditional powers.

True, true.

Pitching and defense.

JSU may see LSU's fourth best starter. A true freshman who I believe started against Alabama on Friday (I may have that wrong. Too lazy to check.) You could tell he was a freshman, but his stuff was crazy good to be so young. Save their weekend starters for the rest of the regional. Huge advantage for them.

If I was Jsu coach, no way I would throw my Ace in game 1.

No way LSU pitches their 4th best.

You don't think so? I highly doubt they pitch Nola, Glenn, or Eades - their weekend starters.

The true freshman I was talking about is Hunter Newman. I looked it up and he actually pitched the Arkansas game on Saturday. Other than a few freshman jitters and minor control issues, the kid looked dang good. He has a 1.57 ERA and if LSU can get that first game win with him it sets them up great for the rest of the regional.

Just my thoughts on it. I could be wrong though.

Why not. He is the kind of pitcher that LSU struggles with.

My goal would be to stay in the tourney as long as possible. Get your kids as much experience as possible which should help next year.

I'd rather pitch my ace the second game because I'd want to win it and thus give my kids at least one more game. Rather play three or four games than go two and out.

Which they may go two and out anyway, but I'd at least want to give my team a chance.

That's my mind. The probablilty of winning that first game is low. LSU will wait and throw NOLA in game #2. As a matter of fact, I would throw the #3 at LSU and try to win the next 2 elimination games with my 1 & 2 and let the chips fall where they may for the finals. I believe Jsu 1 & 2 have a good chance of beating Sam Houston or ULL if they play with no fear and concentrate. If Jsu can get pass game 2, they will be looking at the next team's #3 pitcher. My guess it would be either SH or ULL in games 2 and 3. The key is winning game 2.

In the games that SU and PV won in regionals who did they pitch to win those games against #1 seeds?
