Re: Plans for stadium at JSU reach stalemate

Personally, I can't see how people can't see that we are getting over bigtime in Memorial. All we have to do is show up and pay $15K while the white folks pay the rest to keep that stadium going AND in shape (multi-million dollar renovations). No other team in the nation gets a deal like that.

Well, I too thought that is a very good deal. You basically get a 60K seat stadium for $60K to $75K per season (4 or 5 home game rental price). You don't have to pay for the up keep, you keep 93% of the gate receipts, 50% or concessions and 50% of parking. All that for a 3 mile drive from campus is pretty good. Having an on-campus stadium will probably dig into the pockets more than the current $75K per year stadium rental, but the gate receipts are pretty much going to remain the same.

The thing most don't or won't realize is people are basing there opinions on flawed data, JSU average attendance at Memorial will not reflect the same as it would at an on campus facility. There are little to no controls in place at memorial as for as fraud is concerned when tallying ticket sales and receipts. Counterfeit tickets are the norm at all JSU games in Memorial and non of those proceeds of figures go toward the actual numbers that would allow the powers that be to accurately assess the financial position of the proposed stadium as it relates to JSU. Electronic scanning would prevent this at an on campus facility which is not an option at memorial. I personally witnessed a group enter 2006 Homecoming game with tickets from 2004 game. Tickets are being sold everywhere around the stadium at 50% face value. This is one of the main reasons the big disparity with actual attendance numbers and those reported by Ticketmaster. Everyone knows what the problem is but have no authority to do anything about it because of a lack of control over the venue and its operations. So that sweet deal that some speak of is actually a myth. We are truly being led astray!!!

So the man has his hand in the ticket sales? Well, would that not be the case at an on-campus facility? I'm not that hard up for money, so when someone off the street offers me a ticket at 50% face value, I respectfully decline and keep walking to the ticket booth because I know how it affects the revenue stream of the institution.

This not a case of the man having his hand in the cookie jar it's one of a lack of institutional controls over the operations at a facility. It would not be the case at an on campus facility because we would inact strict controls over the environment ie... JSU employees at the gates, electronic scanning to prevent duplicate tickets from passing through the systems... I applaud you on your restraint to say no but others are not as strong.

This is not a sweet deal and the Governor has publicly stated that JSU is not being treated fairly. A sweet deal is collecting all revenue and the State picking up the tab.

However, on the flipside, I have said for months the lawmakers will use these flawed numbers to determine what size stadium JSU should have and that stadium will be less than 33,000 because USM's stadium currently seats that amount.

back to square 1 it sounds like to me
For a cynic, it would. But for anyone who knows the political game, it's understood that this is the beginning of a process. You think they're abolishing the stadium commission for no reason. Those folk been running that stadium since it began. And now they're not needed???

JSU will have full control of Memorial before it's over. And then we'll get an on-campus stadium.

$60M proposal for apartments, hotel in stadium area in limbo

Bill to extend leases on nearby property on governor's desk; whether plans hinge on his approval unknown

A $60 million hotel-and-apartment development is proposed near Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, but its fate is murky.

A legislative measure to extend leases near the stadium for the development is pending Gov. Haley Barbour's signature. But there's no guarantee he'll approve the bill that also dissolves the stadium commission in mid-2008 and mandates a study of the facility's future.

If you open the PDF and read from 209-219, you'll see that JSU won't have to pay to play. If the Governor signs this bill, the State will be soley responsible for picking up the tab. Now thats what I call a sweet deal however, I'm still in favor of an on campus stadium.

209 (2) The Department of Finance and Administration shall grant
210 Jackson State University the right to hold any of its sports,
211 ceremonial and concert events at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial
212 Stadium without any rental payment
, and shall allow the proper
213 signage designating the stadium as the home stadium of Jackson
214 State University. All profits realized by the Department of
215 Finance and Administration after paying all expenses and costs,
216 including management fees, from any event held on stadium property
217 shall be deposited to the credit of a special fund and authorized
218 for expenditure by the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of
219 Higher Learning exclusively for Jackson State University.

Not all Jackson legislators are pleased with the bill.

Management of the stadium worries Sen. Walter Michel, R-Jackson, who opposed the bill.

If the state's finance agency takes over operations, then taxpayers will be expected to pay. Currently, the stadium is self-supporting.

"Who's going to pay for the light bill?" Michel said. "Whose going to pay for the parking?"

Whatley said the commission collects about $200,000 annually from leases with Schimmel's, Back Yard Burgers, and Pennzoil-McGee's Express Lube and Car Wash.

The stadium operates on money generated by events and the leases.

Jackson State football games, high school championships and other events allow the stadium to "break even," Whatley said. The budget is more than $1.5 million for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

Jackson State gets free rental?!
I wonder if this would've made a difference with the SWAC office in terms of allowing Jackson to be the home office and home of the SCG?

No more faulty attendance numbers. Now we'll really know how many fans JSU averages every year.

Its on the Governors desk and all he gotta do is sign.

No, this wouldn't have made a difference with the SWAC office.

The only way we get accurate attendance numbers are to install electronic scanners to prevent all the counterfeiting that has been taken place and have ticket staff that pays more than a passive glance at the actual ticket to assure it is a football ticket and better yet one to JSU's game for that day. Will we step up and do this is the $$$$$$$$$ ??.

You got that right. Last year, I purposely handed my ticket to the taker (some old coot from the Lion's Club) with the back side showing. NOT ONCE did they flip it over to see what I was handing them. Just tore it and handed me the stub. Damn shame, really. :smh:

Stadium Commission faces Barbour's pen: What's next for 'Vet'?

By Sid Salter

Jackson State Athletic Director Bob Braddy still wants an on-campus stadium for his university - like all the other football-playing universities in the state have had for decades.

But Braddy admits that the fiscal and political odds of that dream becoming a reality are long and says that the future of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium as the home stadium for the JSU Blue Bengal Tigers relies on accountability. That's a refrain repeated by legislators, the current management of the stadium and others familiar with stadium management in Mississippi.

"We welcome the opportunity to have control of Memorial Stadium," said Braddy. "We want accountability. We just hope the state's not going to just throw us out there without the resources we need to be successful. That's only fair."

But the stadium's future remains uncertain as the 60,492-seat facility battles declining utilization, poor attendance at the few events it holds and legislative concerns over future real estate development opportunities on stadium-adjacent prime real estate.

Couple those realities with the fact that JSU - the sole college football tenant of the stadium - is the only football-playing university in the state without an on-campus stadium and both the fiscal and political pictures become even more cloudy.

Same ole same ole.
But at least now it's front and center.

Everybody know this JSU/UMC and Memorial issue is not going away.
They are just delaying what's gonna happen anyway.

Exactly, UMC and investors are ready to do business if the State will stop playing games.

Well...Jackson State can STOP playing games when the STATE gets off its AZZ and gives JSU its money for its OWN stadium on campus....

Eventually Stag something is going to have to be done. We know that UMC is going to have their way.
