Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

But Stagga, wouldn't bldg materials there cost about as much as bldg materials in lets say... Scottsdale, AZ or any other place? Not arguing the cost of living because I'm fairly certain it'll be cheap. But, bldg materials are bldg regardless of physical location I thought.

Building materials are sold regionally. So the Steel could come from Memphis or even jackson, wood from Mississippi, Concreate from mississippi and bricks from Jackson. I'm saying deals will be cut to get in on this Stadium and you never know what politics went into the Unconn deal or the SMU deal. The cost to build in Mississippi is not as High as Conn and or Arizona. Then labor cost will be much lower and you may not have to deal with Unions.

Think about it.
Building material cost are basically the same give or take a few dollars in either direction.
A contractor is going to pay WHOLESALE for whatever he needs to get the job done and have them shipped in at the lowest price.

Labor and overpriced land is what drives up the construction cost.
JSU has been given the land it needs and labor around here pay great wages but the contractor's don't get extorted by labor unions that drive up prices by threating to strike in the middle of projects in bigger more expensive cities.
2 thing's Mississippi got is cheap land and plenty of construction workers.

$66 million is right...................A football stadium basically is re-barb steel and concrete.
Throw in some wiring, scoreboard and a patch of grass and your done.

The Telcom center was built for less than that and it has more shat than a stadium will ever need.
They building a massive convention center now that will be attached.
Again...................That price tag for all the stuff going into that is only bout $70 million and that includes all the mordern techno bullshat that comes with it.

Concrete, Brick's, and Steel all will come from Mississippi.
Remember, they got the go-ahead to build that STEEL PLANT in North Mississippi.

Jackson has all the Concrete and Brick makers you will ever need.
None of the labor or equipment..........CRANES, HEAVY MACHINERY, would have to be leased from out of state either.

Crawler Parts International in Pearl, (used to work for them), got any type of construction equipment needed on the face of the earth.
All those high rise and huge self-propelled cranes that be clogging up the interstates driving 40mph come from that place.

No arguments from this direction. I guess I'm overly interested because of our situation @ PV and the "guesstimations" on cost. We tend to "undershoot" the actual cost vs coming close to ACTUAL cost.

I think UAPB's stadium was the model that PV had looked @. Nice stadium. Expandable, etc. I think it was built for roughly what.... 12-15mill back in the gap? (???????) By today's standards, that exact same stadium is easily starting @ 32mill.

Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

I drive by SMU's stadium at least twice a week, and have been to a few games there... I have to say the sight lines are PERFECT... The stadium is ridiculously COZY and there's not a bad seat in the entire house...

If JSU were able to build this Stadium, the economic potential for Jackson and JSU would grow by leaps and bounds. The MHSAA would beg to play the playoffs there. Maybe even the MPSAA.... And the close proximity to downtown opens up the areas (in between) to new retail, residential and commercial development....

If SMU's stadium is the 'target' arena, then please, by all means, support whatever efforts are underway.......

Gerald Ford Stadium has a modern, eclectic 'throwback' feel to it......

And there's not band 'echo' either (although SMU's pep band doesn't push any wattage, as compared to the Boom and other bands)....

I love SMU's stadium and would love to see JSU build one JUST LIKE IT...

:tup::tup:

Just the thought of what the atmosphere would be like is exciting. I seriously believe the SWAC office is waiting to see if the stadium bill passes the senate.

Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

So that means JSU will raise the additional $14 million to complete the stadium? Also, what is JSU going to do about the homeless people in the area where the stadium is going to be constructed?

What is the dummies point? Man be glad for a fellow HBCU especially a swac school trying to come up. Mississippi needs to do the right thing and build this stadium. If this about USM getting an on campus stadium, the only discussion would be the completion date. You guys need to begin lobbying these fools. It's time for Jackson to invest in West Jackson....The homeless are not the universities' issue dude.

Coalition Takes Issue with State Colleges

Could the Ayers case be reopened? A decision was reached in the college discrimination case in 2000 and initial attempts to revive it fell through, but one of the leading prosecutors in the case is back in Jackson this weekend.

Attorney Alvin Chambliss flew in from Texas to hear the complaints of the Mississippi Coalition of Black Higher Education. The group is taking issue with Alcorn State University's manner of searching for a new president, Valley State's no-confidence vote for its president, and ownership of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, which Jackson State University leases from the state. Right now there are tentative plans for UMC to demolish the stadium and for JSU to get its own brand-new facility. Coalition members say preserving Veterans Stadium would be more cost-effective. They plan to wait and see if their complaints get any attention before taking the matter further.
"For example, has Valley heard back from the commission yet on its vote of no confidence? Once we do find out from each one of those three universities, we then will decide what the next step on each one," said Ivory Phillips dean emeritus at Jackson State University.

Chambliss says his legal team will conduct research on the matters pro-bono, and if he feels they warrant a lawsuit, he may accept the challenge.

We are still waiting...

Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

It would be more cost effective for the State of Mississippi to turn Memorial Staduim over to Jackson State instead of building a new one.

It won't be cost effective because UMC will still need the land to build a medical research park.

Robertson has facts wrong as he sits on bill for JSU stadium

March 11, 2007

By Eric Stringfellow
Special to The Clarion-Ledger

"I don't think we ought to take state money and be building a stadium when we didn't do it for the other ones," Robertson told The Clarion-Ledger this past week.

That's not exactly the truth.

In Hattiesburg, the state has invested tax dollars into the University of Southern Mississippi's football stadium since the facility was built in 1992. In 1998, for example, the state issued bonds to construct a $1.4 million digital scoreboard.

The state also has assisted with various renovation projects at Mississippi State University's stadium in Starkville, issuing bonds in 1993, 1998 and 2001.

The stadium at Ole Miss started as a federal project in 1915. The state issued bonds for renovations in 1997 and 2000.

Alcorn State University's Jack Spinks Stadium/Dwight Fisher Field opened in 1992. Its construction was fully funded by the state.

Robertson, who could not be reached for comment, clearly has his facts wrong.

It would be one thing to question the timing of JSU's appeal, as Barbour has done. Barbour, in an interview on Wednesday, said JSU clearly is operating in a situation that is not fair to the institution.

The governor said it came down to a matter of priorities, and a stadium for JSU isn't something he's willing to put his clout behind.

OK, people may not like that, but you can respect it.

Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

It won't be cost effective because UMC will still need the land to build a medical research park.

There is land from Taylor Street to Mitchell Street that UMC can acquire for a medical research park.

Re: Robertson has facts wrong as he sits on bill for JSU stadium

JSU supporters should fight to build that stadium to include atleast 40 skyboxes. It is a great investment for the future.

Re: Robertson has facts wrong as he sits on bill for JSU stadium

This is one of the few times I agree with Springfellow on his articles. I believe however, if the governor dont throw some support on this issue I believe it will not happen. It is going to be hard for JSU to get this deal done if he dont back it. Well then again this is election time for a lot of seats including the governor.

I feel the same way but the Governor did clearly admit to JSU not being treated fairly. It will be interesting to see how this turns out in the end.

Re: For once, let's think before we pony up for a JSU Stadium

Ole Miss wants the most valuable land in Jackson and its not from Taylor to Mitchell street. They want the land the VET currently sits on and have made it public to everyone. They will get it in the near future and its only a matter of time before it actually happens. Thats why I wonder exactly what the Governor meant by the timing of the proposal. There couldn't be a better time to present this to the senate, but what the heck do I know.

JSU Stadium...............Here's a kick in the head.......

To all those people that have talked DOWN on JSU asking the state for $66 million in BONDS to build our own.....................USM got their's QUIETLY.
This is after these people bragged about all these renovations are to be done through PRIVATE DONATIONS and FUNDRAISING.

Bonds help USM renovation at Football and Baseball Stadiums.

USM stadium renovations, expansions moving forward

By Tim Doherty
[email protected]

HATTIESBURG ? The state College Board is expected to give its final approval Thursday on a request to issue bonds to help find the renovation of Southern Miss? football and baseball stadiums.

Last month, the Board approved USM?s plans for the $31.8 million Roberts Stadium project and authorized up to $29 million in bonds to pay for the construction projects.

$29 million for USM and they already have one.:what:
People in this state and people HERE have gave all kinds of silly reasons why JSU should not be given the same help.

NOW WHAT.
I wanna hear all the excuses why this "IS NOT THE SAME".

I know who you are.:goof:
Don't make me bump threads back up
.:goof:

Re: JSU Stadium...............Here's a kick in the head.......

Get them Stagg.

They have disappeared all of a sudden.:lmao:
I remember the talk about how these school's, OLE MISS, MS. STATE, USM, did thier building by raising funds on their own.

The people in Mississippi know better.
