Jackson State's and Alcorn's Athletic Budgets loses funds

I dee-double-dare you to tell your statement above to Appalachian State.

Appalachian State got far more "exposure" and made more money from beating Michigan then they would make if they won 20 national championships. There is no such thing as FCS playoff money or exposure.

Jackson State's budget of $6.03 million was slashed by 11 percent, by far the largest decrease of the state's seven public universities. A JSU spokesman did not return a call for comment. Delta State, whose football team played for the Division II national championship last season, had a budget boost of 5.6 percent to $2.90 million.

First of all, the title of this thread is highly deceptive and misleading. The article title itself tells one who can read what it's about. "Rebels, Bulldogs see boom in budget: Athletic budgets at state's SEC schools grow by a combined $6.6 M"

The state legislature has nothing to do with the article. SWACdecider is a known JSU hater and intentionally put this article up as being that the state of Mississippi cut JSU funding. Either this is outright hate or dude can't comprehend a simple article or maybe both.

The article has to do with fundraising, ticket sales and perks from being in the SEC. This has nothing to do with the Mississippi legislature cutting anything.

2011-12 budgets
School Budget Chg.

Ole Miss $47.58M +8.9%
Miss. State $40.06M +7.2%
Southern Miss $20.19M +2.2%
Jackson State $6.03M -11.3%
Alcorn State $5.06M -4.6%
Miss. Valley $3.32M +1.3%
Delta State $2.90M +5.6%

Shows the percentages being cut from budgets and the money the state is taking away. Might as well say taken away to give to Ole Miss, Miss. State etc.

Where does it remotely say in the article anything about the state taking away money from JSU to give to Ole Miss and Miss. State?:noidea: Folks just making up stuff. LOL!!

Jay I said that on page one..SMH

I said I was done but do some of you don't understand "18.5 Million from League Revenue Sharing".

Their football teams can have a below .500 record for the season yet still see over 1 million dollars just by being an SEC Member. This isn't about blaming the state legislation, this showing you guys how a good conference, ran the right way, can benefit ALL no matter what their record is. The SWAC is not willing to compromise with one another thus this is how we are in the current shat we are in that basically leads to nowhere.

The MEAC is not going to lose those first round games forever. Eventually, somebody is going to break through.

Do you even know how some of those Professional Athletes get Endorsement Deals? Do they just sit on the bench every game or do they show and expose their talent to the world? Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, and Julio Jones didn't get those endorsement deals just sitting on the bench not playing. Their talent was exposed to the world and they exceeded at it thus sponsors saw that and wanted them in commercials to market their brand and product. Appalachian State had a television show one time chronicling their pre-season camp. More than likely, THEY GOT PAID for the filming per episode. When BET went to Grambling and filmed "Season of the Tiger", were they not paid by BET per episode that was filmed?

Did NBC Sports just up and decide, "Oh, let televise this Bayou Classic game and see what it is about?"

By the Way, Jag99,

According to the wikipedia page of NBC Sports, The Bayou Classic began to be televised on NBC in 1990. Did they just up and decide we are going to Televise this game or did exposure lead them to televise it?

You said all of that, and none of it addressed the facts that teams lose money in the playoffs and few people outside of the participating schools pay attention to the FCS playoffs. If the playoffs were that profitable, schools wouldn't be breaking their necks trying to move up to FBS. And somehow, we got a nationally televised game without the playoffs, I fail to see how that supports your point.

And he fails to mention the fact that the SWAC is the only FCS conference to have it's championship game televised on an ESPN network. That's quite a bit of exposure that other FCS schools aren't getting.
The SWAC has the highest attendance rating of any FCS conference, so we must be doing something right to get fans out.
The SWAC has some of the highest attended games in all of FCS football, so we must be doing something right.

One thing about Braveheart123, he'll point out what's wrong with the SWAC, but he struggles at trying to give legit reasons of how schools can raise money.
And for some reason, he continues to compare an FCS conference to the best FBS conference in the nation. That's nowhere near being a reasonable comparison but I'm sure he knows this.

Thank You. I never heard of Appalachain State until they beat Michigan. I can't even tell you who won the past FCS national titles.

I can tell you it had nothing to do with playing in the playoffs.

I know this revenue stream hardly gets mentioned , does anyone realize how much money the swac is making and in many cases losing when unauthorized people sell bootleg swac gear. Royalties are suppose to come to our institutions. When is this going to get more attention and is the conference and the individual institutions policing this. Also Money for the I-AA playoffs isn't realized until a team gets to the semifinals and finals. Is the notoriety of playing for a championship in our division which happens to be I-AA mean more than the finances. I would think the better you are in I-AA the more exposure you get and threrefore the domino effect of getting better athletes etc..

I agree. That's the absolute truth. Then the people that don't give back like they should are the first one's to criticize but their sorry azz can't even by season tickets to help you the school even if they can't go to all the home games.

And the killer is the first excuse is how the school pissed them off...sad I tell ya.

To your first point, we lose a ton of money on bootleg gear. But as a people we're always looking for the hook-up, we'd rather get a shirt for 5 dollars than to spend more on licensed gear. But to your point about the playoffs, it is well documented that there isn't money to be made in the playoffs. Teams that won titles and played multiple games at home have been lucky to break even. Even after paying a fee to host a game, most of the home gate goes to the NCAA. Beyond that, few people actually pay attention to the FCS playoffs. The casual sports fan can't tell you who won the last 2 or 3 FCS titles.

I am an avid sports fan, and I can't tell you who won the FCS championships.

You are right. Most HBCU athletic programs make little to nothing on merchandize, parking, concessions, tickets etc, and pennies compared to the big boy from TV/advertising deals. That is where some of the difference needs to be made up.

Does anyone think that becoming the best at the level that you are in mean something. We are in I-AA football. The SWAC is a division I conference with an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships in every sport except football. Is there any real energy from fans to want to be the best. My philposphy is that if fans and everyone involved Comish, Presidents etc.. take that attitude then at some point it will translate into more dollars. Branding and Marketing the conference at our schools would be easier instead of harder. The SEC literally markets itself and with the huge TV contract(s) the money is pouring in. Until or unless we improve our visability in Football and pack our stadiums every Saturday and I am not talking about the rival games every home game rival or not should be full . If we do that then every school will make money. That will carry them throughout the rest of the year and help pay for the other sports. Classic games are fine for exposure but how many of the "CLASSICS" really pay significant dollars. Other than the Circle City. One can't expect help if we don't help ourselves. Football drives the athletic wheel at all of our schools. We need to maximize our potential.

I dont think the Circle City pays that well. I would assume the best paying Classics are the Bayou, Florida, and Magic City Classics.
