A ‘Day with the Boom’ reaches record enrollment

A “Day with the Boom” reached record enrollment after 900 plus students signed up this year. It was more than JSU music instructors and directors anticipated. “We were all surprised about the major interest of this event,” said Mr. Roderick Little, associate director of bands. “This is a testament of what the program means to students who aspire to one day join the Sonic Boom or further their education at Jackson State University.” A “Day with the BOOM” is an opportunity for high school students (9-12 Winds, Percussion and Dancers), and all other students interested in Jackson to spend a day with The “Sonic Boom of the South” and gain firsthand insight on the band through music rehearsal(s) and a performance showcase on campus.

What makes this documentary unique is Beyonce’s undeniable homage to black culture, but more significantly her tribute to HBCUs and HBCU band culture. She previously shared that some of her dance moves are inspired by Jackson State University’s Prancing J-Settes. In the doc, she further reveals a long-standing wish to attend an HBCU, and she seems to visually showcase this desire to viewers by placing noted historic black colleges and universities, like JSU, in her documentary. It is a gesture that displays the singer’s love and respect for all things black. And during a voiceover in her familiar raspy tone, Beyonce shares some of what she loves about her people.

Jackson State University featured in Beyoncé documentary (Video)

By Summer Tadlock | April 24, 2019 at 7:20 PM CDT - Updated April 24 at 8:12 PM

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mississippi’s very own Jackson State University was recently mentioned in Beyoncé’s ‘Homecoming’ documentary on Netflix!
Beyoncé’s Coachella performance took inspiration from J-Setting and other dance styles of Historically Black Colleges and Universities marching bands.
One of the HBCU’s mentioned was none other than JSU’s Sonic Boom of the South and Prancing J-Settes! One of those dancers is Mary Sampson.
“Just seeing Jackson State.s name on the screen... It’s like, I’m Jackson State! I am apart of that. When I think of JSU I think of me because this University has done so much for me. When I see that I see that she is recognizing JSU and my work as well.”

The Sonic Boom of the South Pep Band will perform in the second annual South Jackson Proud Parade on Saturday. The procession will begin at 9 a.m. at the Save-A-Lot grocery store on McDowell Road and will end at Cardozo Middle School.

“Whenever possible the Sonic Boom supports functions, which allow our students to develop a sense of community with surrounding neighborhoods,” said Dowell Taylor, director of bands and music technology.

The event is sponsored by the Association of South Jackson Neighborhoods along with Jackson leaders and clergy.

Hollis Pippin: Hollis Pippin was born on May 03, 1950. He grew up in Jackson, Mississippi—where he graduated from the historic Brinkley High School in 1968. In the fall of ‘68, Pippin attended Jackson State College. As an avid dancer, Pippin served as a drum major for JSC’s marching band as a freshman. Pippin went on to twirl as a featured twirler, choreograph for the Prancing Jaycettes (J-Settes) as well as serve as a member of a vocal group—the Soul Train Gang. His accolades extend what is stated. I pay homage to Mr. Pippin.

What started off as an innovative way to break free from traditional baton twirling has turned into a dance phenomenon, inspiring the likes of Ciara and Beyoncé. J-setting is a unique form of dance, originating in the 1970s when the ladies of the Jackson State University band traded their batons for a creative dance style that would not limit them physically. Today, J-setting has become a sensation, making its way into pop culture and finding legions of fans.

Dance is a powerful, personal form of self-expression. A new film tells a story about dancers overcoming prejudice and fear to express themselves with a style of dance called “bucking.”

That movie, called “When the Beat Drops,” opens this year’s Out on Film Festival.

Bucking was derived from moves developed by the Jackson State University Prancing J-Settes dance team, and adapted by gay men around the Southeast. The documentary focuses on the bucking scene in Atlanta from the 1980s to present.

Dancer Anthony Davis is the primary subject of the film and recalls seeing the J-Settes for the first time as a member of his school’s marching band.

“To see the grace, the dynamics, the agility of these young ladies doing things that I knew that guys were not supposed to do was just extraordinary,” Davis tells City Lights host Lois Reitzes, “and I loved it from the first day that I seen it.”
