Flashback Friday!

What started off as an innovative way to break free from traditional baton twirling has turned into a dance phenomenon, inspiring the likes of Ciara and Beyoncé. J-setting is a unique form of dance, originating in the 1970s when the ladies of the Jackson State University band traded their batons for a creative dance style that would not limit them physically. Today, J-setting has become a sensation, making its way into pop culture and finding legions of fans.

Dance is a powerful, personal form of self-expression. A new film tells a story about dancers overcoming prejudice and fear to express themselves with a style of dance called “bucking.”

That movie, called “When the Beat Drops,” opens this year’s Out on Film Festival.

Bucking was derived from moves developed by the Jackson State University Prancing J-Settes dance team, and adapted by gay men around the Southeast. The documentary focuses on the bucking scene in Atlanta from the 1980s to present.

Dancer Anthony Davis is the primary subject of the film and recalls seeing the J-Settes for the first time as a member of his school’s marching band.

“To see the grace, the dynamics, the agility of these young ladies doing things that I knew that guys were not supposed to do was just extraordinary,” Davis tells City Lights host Lois Reitzes, “and I loved it from the first day that I seen it.”

After watching Boom videos over the weekend, I'm convinced a fundraiser needs to happen to replace old instruments.

Some of the instruments look very outdated and I'm over the different color instruments b/c it's distracting. If JSU wants to be on SU level, they need to fix that until then they will always be second fiddle to the Jukebox. JSU have the sound, size and arrangements to compete but they missing on the aesthetic

The Saturday after Las Vegas, when the Sonic Boom marched out against Tennessee State in Memphis, all the horn and woodwind players were holding brand-new instruments, funded by the cash-strapped university at a cost of more than $460,000. The old instruments were wearing out, and the new ones, all made by the same company, sounded more harmonious with each other. “It increases our competitive edge,” says Sanford. “But nothing happens cheaply with a band this size.”

Yea, that's what I thought and regardless we would still have been just fine and second to none! (And btw thanks for posting my fav "Boom" article of all times! LOL! It just doesn't get better than that!

That man/women spent his/her holiday weekend watching Boom videos.

I mean... I guess that’s what folks do when their band is garbage. They admire & watch the best band(s). Kinda flattering but a compliment coming from a txsu fan don’t mean sh*t.

Newsflash, you just watched OLD clips. I repeat....OLD clips. Those clips aren't today's clips. Every band has had different instruments. You just happened to see classic clips only of The BOOM.
Had you seen OLD clips of other bands, you'd see that.
As far as 2019, what different instruments did you see in The BOOM?

His WHOLE weekend!! And then has the nerve to criticize OLD clips. What person with a shred of common sense does that and then compare old band instruments to today's instruments? LOL.

If only you knew how wrong you were lol. We had new instruments the last dew years and we also had all new instruments before southern got theirs. This is why its good to mind our business when we don't know what we are talking about. I see some folks delight in looking like an a** lol.

I watched last year videos and I seen what I stated. That's unacceptable for a high caliber band such as "Thee" mighty Sonic Boom of The South

I watch my alma mater too, but I've always been a fan of Da Boom before I even knew what college I was going to attend. I can't like any school band outside my alma mater?

And I spent less than 1 hour watching videos waiting for my car to be fixed you big jerk. And now Haymer is in our camp, let's see how much trash you talking come fall ... the Ocean is about to really make the SWAC seasick and jealous
