Dance Evolution: Prancing-Jsettes (video)

3 On Your Side: Bring It - Dance evolution - MSNewsNow.com - Jackson, MS

Nobody gets Jackson State fans more *ready* than Captain Morgan Hightower and the Prancing J-Settes.
And it's nothing short of a thrilling performance by the Sonic Boom and Prancing J-Settes.

Chloe Crowley gives the cue,
"One more time"
And the show begins.

We caught up with Chloe Crowley and her girls at a special practice gearing up to break out their sizzling hot dance moves.

With the J-Settes of the past, "they never touched the grass," explained Crowley. "A lot of people would pattern our style and call it acrobatics. We do cartwheels, flips, round-offs, then give you a little pop pop here, pop here, and a little groove and everything."

The Jackson State University family is saddened by the passing of Dr. Jimmie James, Jr., the former chair of the JSU Department of Music.

Dr. James, a 1960 graduate of Jackson State University, retired chair of the music department and legendary halftime announcer, passed Sunday, June 25, 2017 at about 7:30 pm.

Dr. James received a bachelor of music education degree from JSU and graduated cum laude as JSU's first tuba major. James began his professional career in 1966, six years after graduating from the then Jackson State College. The Hattiesburg native was most commonly known as the voice of the Sonic Boom of The South, a position he held since his first year of employment at JSU. Dr. James cultivated a unique ability to awe thousands with his signature introductions of the JSU marching band during the halftime performances.

One of his most well known introductory lines is, "Fine tune your sensory apparatus."

Dr. James retired from JSU in 2009. During his 43-year tenure, he served as a professor, band director, director of musical activities, coordinator of the Graduate Music Program, director of the concert band, assistant band director, and director of the brass ensemble. In 2011, Dr. James and wife Carrie James established the Jimmie and Carrie James Endowed Scholarship for students studying music. In 2014, the Recital Hall in the F.D. Hall Music Center was renamed in James' honor.
Shortly before his retirement, JSU released this video with Dr. James talking about his experience at JSU.

Please keep the family of Dr. James in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Maybe its just me but I have always felt that something was not quite right whenever I hear the introduction of the Boom as they crank up "Get Ready" and march into the Stadium since Dr. James retired and stopped his patented entrance introduction! To those who weren't fortunate enough to hear his "Booming Melodious Voice introducing the Boom over the years I offer my regrets! Other announcers may be good but he will always be our standard! His unique voice certainly must have "fine tuned (my) sensory apparatus" because again I feel something is not quite right when I don't hear his voice ringing throughout the Stadium as the Voice of the Sonic Boom of the South! Congratulations to him and his Family on a productive life that was well spent. RIP Dr. Jimmie James Jr.!

J-5 drum majors, J-Settes, JSU extras have ‘just’ right stuff for C Spire commercial

Film directors and producers cheer when a perfectly executed scene becomes a showstopper, and they experienced such a moment when the Sonic Boom’s J-5 drum majors and several J-Settes pranced and gyrated in a segment of a C Spire Wireless commercial that will begin airing statewide in August.

The swanky moves were a sight to behold for visiting crewmembers from Los Angeles and other parts of the country as a few members of Jackson State University’s internationally renowned band shimmed down a row of rousing “fans” during a simulated tailgate party recently.

The commercial is designed to help the wireless provider kick off football season in Mississippi and spotlight C Spire’s “We Work For You” campaign.

JSU was among several state universities enlisted to help market C Spire’s message about the company’s products, services and investment in university football.

Another aspect of the commercial is to convey that C Spire is capable of enhancing wireless services via mobile satellite cell towers in places such as the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, for example, where thousands of gridiron fans gather to watch the JSU Tigers in head-to-head matchups against rivals on the turf.

Roderick Little, marching band director of the Sonic Boom, described JSU’s involvement as “excellent from a public relations standpoint.”

Furthermore, Little said, “With the Sonic Boom of the South being one of the most powerful public relations units of the university, I think it’s only right that we participate so that we can continue to represent our university in the very best light.”

As for JSU student participants, Little said this opportunity could be as close to show business as they may experience – especially with all the tailgating props, cameras and food.
