If FAMU becomes an establish 1-A

If and when Famu becomes an establish D1-A foe and your invited to play them at home what would you do.

  • 1.Work under the same rules as was D1-AA to be paid
  • 2.Ask to be paid just like other D1-A schools pay their opponents
  • 3.Try to workout a deal where the profits are split 50/50 because of the old ties

Give them a few years and I think FAMU will be a force to be reckoned with in 1-A. Think about all the athletes that want to attend HBCU's but choose not to because of the advantage of playing at a 1-A school. I think FAM will capitalize off that. You will see alot of OUR players going to FAMU.

atleast i hope that's the case.

I am having a hard time believing that FAMU is going to all of a sudden get top tier athletes because now they are D-1A rather than 1-AA. If that were the case that same case would be used in basketball and all other sports since they are all 1A.

As for as playing them as a 1A - FAMU is gonna have to come up off some money. I would think the same payments that J-State got for playing Southern Miss or SU for play Tulane etc...would apply to FAMU. Aint no 'brotha man' discount 'bout to jump off just cause you trying to play an HBCU. These are some of the things they needed to take into account (im sure they did) before the jump.

The real question is "will FAMU continue to treat HBCU's the same?"

In other words, will they still agree to play home-and-home against us, or will they want us to come to them exclusively because they are I-A?

I believe that if they continue to play us on a home-and-home basis or at a neutral site (i.e. Detroit, Atlanta and so on), then HBCU's will continue treating them the same.

On the other hand, if they want us to come to them exclusively, then they need to get up off some change.

My sentiments exactly!!!!!!

Often times we are really quick to run with a statement. But there arew two ways to look at just about everything.

I am having a hard time believing that FAMU is going to all of a sudden get top tier athletes because now they are D-1A rather than 1-AA. If that were the case that same case would be used in basketball and all other sports since they are all 1A.

Most whom honestly look at the picture in regards to Florida A & M moving from I-AA to I-A would not suggest that Florida A & M University will all of a sudden land "top tier" recruits as suggested by Majiksity agreed with by TSU/BAMA.

Many are only suggesting that it is reasonably simple to view other programs that are not top tier BCS level programs that have shown that they are able to recruit solid caliber players that are able to have winning programs and often time compete and even beat BCS level programs, while there are also BCS level programs with a great deal of revenue that are not able to provide their programs with winning seasons, especially given the assumption provided by reports from Florida A & M University that they will provide the near the 85 scholarship limit, renovate their current stadium to seat between 30K-40K, a state of the art weight facility as well as a athletic facility in regards to a new arena along with television exposure.

If you are going on the assumption that Florida A & M University is serious in their efforts to provide students athletes with above luxuries, then it is not at all reasonable to assume that Florida A & M University will have the ability to land some decent recruiting classes that should allow them to be competitive with Mid-Major programs and providing them with the opportunity to even spring a up-set to BCS level competition along they way as the continue to build their programs as many football programs are looking to do these days.

Maybe I should clarify my point regarding the kind of athlete that FAMU will get : they will get the same quality of athlete that they are getting now - but since they will have more scholarships to offers, they will just get more of the same.

If FAMU was truely raising hell at the 1-AA level and then decided to make the jump - the kind of athlete they would attract might be a bit different, but at the point in which they are entering D-1A, it is not really going to make a major difference. Once/IF they make the move and the prove themselves as competitive then im sure they will get better players. But if the attraction is to play at a HBCU that is the first one to jump to 1A in football - and that team is constantly losing whats the use? Troy State for instance - they are still getting the same athletes they were getting at the 1AA level - they just have more of them - but they are not winning. If they ever do start, then im sure they will compete for the "better" athlete.

If FAMU makes the move - and after the first 4 years or so they are constantly 3-8, 2-9, 4-7 - what is the draw for a player to attend FAMU - versus one attending a Gram, SU, Bama St , J-State, AMMU - HBCU's that during the same time frame might be posting winning records? My point being that the "HBCU" draw is not necesarily going to work - if FAMU is competing against HBCU that are winning at the time - even though they are 1-AA - for the same player - the fact that they are 1A is not goin to be present much of a difference. It is my contention that the student - if they base it on just football - will pick the school that is winning.

Agreed. This is the same reason McNeese is able to consistently outrecruit the ULs....

This is not totally true. You have some people who just want to play 1-A ball. They may not get most of their first choices but they will get some good athletes.

Central Florida and Troy State have recently made the jump from I-AA to I-A.
have those schools attracted the same type athletes that would normally sign with Florida State, Miami, Alabama or Auburn?

Also, we must look at how have they faired against the "big boys" of I-A football since their leap.

As far a guarantee games are concerned. I hear FAMU is requesting some big bucks for the I-A schools that have been calling them. When FAMU starts to call "us" for guarantee games will they be able to guranatee the big bucks? For example, a school like Florida State can offer a small HBCU $45,000 and 10 hotel rooms to fly down to Tally for a basketball game. What type of guarantee could FAMU make?

In my opinion, you have made a great deal many assumptions with several leaps in providing your opinion in regards to Florida A & M University move to Div-I A and their ability to recruit more and better caliber athletes (not top tier) with little reference to proving statistical evidence.

Your reference to the example of Troy State University and suggestion that they are only recruiting more of the same athletes they recruited at the Div-IAA level without reference to how you came up with this assertion is difficult for those that are used to analyzing data before providing an opinion on a subject.

In my opinion, there are so many various reasons why student athletes chose to accept an athletic scholarship. In fact it is to many to reasonable assume that when Troy State University moved from Division II to Division I AA to Division I A that they have not changed the quality caliber of student athlete they recruited, but only the number of them.

This assumption, as stated above, does not take into account the various reasons student athletes chose to except an athletic scholarship.

i.e.
1) The ability to study for your future chosen profession (major)
2) A particular schools athletic graduation rate
3) The ability to start at a given position
4) Location of school
5) Winning tradition
6) Television exposure
7) Quality of coaching
8) Quality of facilities
9) Quality of competition
10) Quality of fan support
11) etc.

The list above is just a small portion of the number of reasons a student athlete will chose to except an athletic schoplarship. The information listed above was obtain by an interview of a student athlete that choose to except an athletic scholarship as well as seperate research paper on HBCU student athletes.

Has the thought crossed your mind that FAMU is not trying to be like Florida State and Alabama right now. They just need to get some good athletes and play some teams on the lower teir like Troy State and Central Florida. They don't have to beat Florida State next year to show that they belong in 1-A.

Orange Tiger,

I would suggest that Florida A & M University will provide a similar payout that most of the Mid-Major Tier Division I A/Division I athletic programs provide for Lower Tier Division I AA/Division I i.e. Troy State University pays out to Alabama State University, North Texas University pays out to Grambling State University, Middle Tennessee State University to Tennessee State University, Arkansas State University to Prairie View A & M University and etc.

Again, in "clarification", let's all agree that FAMU wont attract "top tier" athletes - but they are hoping to get "better" quality athletes with this move. That being said, my points still remain - if they make the move and are losing game after 4 or 5 years after the move - their being at the D1A level is not going to give them an advantage in recruiting against other HBCU's that may be winning during the same time frame. They will still get the same athlete they are getting now - only more of them due to the scholorship increase. And that assumption includes the school itself (great academics, location etc).

I used Troy State as an example because if you look at them competively since their move up - they are a below average D1 team - but probably still would be one of the dominant D1AA teams if they were still at that level. They have not had any kind of national recognized recruiting classes, have not had a winning season - even though they have consistantly played "small" D1A teams that would compare to themselves, and they still dont have a conference affiliation. So on the "surface" it would appear to me that Troy State is still a D1AA team - with D1A scholarship numbers - getting the same kind of athlete prior to the move up - only more of them.

And again I say "in my opinion" FAMU will pretty much get the same thing - UNTIL they prove they are winning at that level. And yea one or two athletes might sign with FAMU just to play at a 1A level - but I dont think that FAMU is going be able to play the HBCU "card" and compete against current winning HBCU's when they are recruting the same athlete. What would be the benefit? If that student also just wanted to go to FAMU because of also the academics and location - then that student just wanted to go to FAMU (and that would be great-we need more students to attend HBCU's for that reason)- it would not be because the football team is playing 1A football.

I agree with that. I don't think Troy State is a much better team than they were when they were 1AA. All moving up did was make it easier to schedule more "Beat Down" paydays. When it realy comes down to it, what the hell does a few close games against the big boys and an upset here or there really mean next to a losing season and no bowl game every year. A 1A independent is definately NOT the way to go unless you are Notre Dame.

I really can't foresee FAMU playing Jackson State or Southern. I think they are going to stick with TNState in ATL and BCC in Orlando. So all of that is moot. Promoters will handle the payouts.

I think that is so true. And quite frankly, I don't think that even Notre Dame will stay independent too much longer. But thats:topic: and a whole nother thread.

To me, the answer to all 3 are the same as it always has been, you just gotta negoiate a deal. Just like we did with Tulane (play at thier home, we split the gate) or Alcorn (we just pay you to come to us ) . IF the money is right on both ends, they will probably do it, it not, they won't. A home and home with Southern FAMU would probably be a big win for both schools, both probably being a sellout. FAMU ain't going to no bowl game anyway, so they can let that be thier 1 AA home game for attendance purposes.

I simply disagree with your assessment and for whatever it is worth you have provided little evidence to convince me to believe in your assumptions.

In fact, your last sentence is very contradictory by the very nature of your comparision.
