Here come the ESPN firings, worse than we thought





ESPN is firing over 100 employees today as its business continues to collapse.

For several years I have been writing on this site about the coming business implosion at ESPN. Today, with the announcement that over 100 on air talent at ESPN were being let go, many will finally come to realize what Outkick readers have read here for the past several years -- ESPN's business model is fundamentally broken and there is no saving it. The continuing collapse of ESPN is the biggest story in sports -- the sub-prime mortgage crisis with bouncing balls.

From 1979 to 2011 ESPN was part of the greatest business in the history of media. But from 2011 on we're going to witness the biggest media collapse since AOL. It's creative destruction writ large and ESPN is a dead company walking. Today sucks for many employees, but it was inevitable because the sports rights bubble has burst and the fallout is really just beginning.

Clay Travis is an idiot for saying ESPN lost subscribers because of politics. The layoffs have more to do with rights fees, over-the-top growth and how the public chooses to consume media (cable bundles, online streaming and cord-cutting).

There is no real safe spaces in media these days regardless. My company recently laid off 289 people in one day mostly because it was losing advertising revenue -- the lifeblood of newspaper funding.

Travis either doesn't understand how the industry works, or he's trying to play to his conservative fan base.
 
But yeah ESPN deciding to go all in on college football (and meddling with it) and NFL while not adjusting to the times was its downfall.

I knew they were bleeding money left and right but didn't know it was this bad until recently.
 
So when do the folks who cause this mess get their pink slips?

Those people who lost jobs did not piss me off to the point I dumped my ESPN Magazines subscription when trying to charge me a different price (mind you I was with that magazine from day one until 2008)
Nor have the same damn stories talked about nonstop-unless you have an update of new info I don't need the same stories repeated again every 20 minutes.

Although it's now being reported ESPN is trying to get folks back at lesser pay with the nugget of those folks can't get more elsewhere. They dumped enough folks to form a new sports network.

idk if its just me but its been looking like "ESPN light" lately... I can somewhat tell the difference on my favorite tv channel

ESPN has let go of yet another longtime NFL reporter. John Clayton, who has covered the NFL for ESPN for 23 years, has been laid off, according to Sporting News. Clayton’s ESPN Radio show in Seattle will remain in place, as the local ESPN Radio affiliates are not actually owned by ESPN. But he is done covering the league for ESPN on television and on ESPN.com
