Hell what about the linebackers?

Grambling has a lot of depth coming back, but not any guys with a lot of stats. The top returner in terms of tackles and experience is Antoine Smith. Antoine had a good season last year but suffered some injuries late in the season...he will be counted on this year.

Currently, the starter at middle linebacker is former LSU transfer Marcus Yanez who has been on the roster since 2001 as a red-shirt freshman. He is being pushed by current red-shirt freshman Dimitri Carr (former all-stater from Farmerville High's state championship team). Carr was awesome in the spring and has bulked up from 210 to 6'2" 245 lbs of muscle. The outside linebacker is being battle for by veteran/ special team wiz Fred Wicker, John Petty and David Hicks. All of these guys are good looking prospects and athletes. Petty started at tight end as a true freshman but was moved to linebacker. He also gets lots of rep at both the strong side backer and the middle linebacker post.

JSUs front 7 is unmatched....we are on a higher level when it comes to LBs and DLs. Thompson, McGowan, and Lewis are unrivaled in a confrence that really doesnt focus on defense much. And they are being pushed by a back up set that would start anywhere else.

Dimitri Carr is a star in the making. Look for big things from him along with his teammate T. Cleveland at TB. But I agree STC, we were weak last year at LB. We lost 3 starters from a corps of LB's that were some of the best in Grambling history. There was bound to be a slight drop off. Taylor, Dukes, and Co. took time to gel and get better. Give this group a chance...

Why am I not suprised by what GR had to say........now you have the best DB's along with the top front 7, so I guess that means you have the best defense in the SWAC.......that sure sounds familiar GR. You said the same thing last year

The bottom line is we have the best defense going into this season and we had the best players last year. Any honest person would say that.

Does Gram have the best defense?
You know yourself the answer is no.
I happen to believe we do and that is the bottom line.
Now we have added the best coach to go along with the best talent and that is the deal.

So STC, are you calling MikeB and Suge a lie? They seems to think that you all had the #1 defense. I know you will tell the truth.
 
JSU's linebackers will shock the world in a good way. No Elgin Andrews this upcoming year but the replacement is just a guy who was projected to start until he got hurt his red shirt freshman year while Andrews and Zack Grady was still here. Maybe you heard of him Jason Lewis. McGowen and Thompson are converted strong safeties on the outside LB position so you know speed and hitting power is there. These are not little DB's either. Covering slots won't be a problem either with those guys. And there are a host of other guys who can play. Watch for Mosley, Adams and #2 Marion Marks.

Carr will be hard to keep out of the starting lineup. Redshirt David Hicks was running 1st team in the B&G game with the Black Team. Made some nice plays on hard running Michael Oree (who had a breakout scrimmage). Lots of depth from lots of linebackers in recent signing classes.

Terry Cooper plays linebacker in the nickel package or sometimes lines up at rush end. Dude was a redshirt freshmen who had 10 sacks as a spot player. Recruited as a strong safety but growing into a front seven mismatch. Too much speed coming off the corner or on a blitz!

Precisely...we are going to be powerful and fast at LB this year. Thompson and McGowan might be faster than the safeties. This years defense is going to be even better than last years.
