GREATEST SWAC FOOTBALL COACHES OF ALL-TIME


Man, I heard some stories about Merritt (especially while he was at Tn State). Not to demean from his accomplishments, but I heard he pulled all sorts of stunts. I remember hearing a story about an opposing coach catching him eavesdropping at the door to their dressing room. Said when they open the door, Merritt fell into the room and feigned lightheadedness from "the sugars" and said he didn't know where he was. :lmao::lmao:

Never heard the one about Hill slapping Casem... but SWAC football ain't for the mildmannered. Even though he could act a fool sometimes, that's what I liked about Doug. He was old school... (just ask Asberry). Now Coach Rob would never do something like that, but don't let folks mislead you about Eddie. He was as classy and gentlemanly a guy as you'd ever want to meet, but don't think he didn't have his guys ready to whup some azz. He didn't cheat...but he'd try to beat the brakes off your azz thru any means necessary.

JSU has usually had some mean coaches. Merritt, Hill, Gorden, Big Daddy was cool but didn't play.

I think Comegy fits the SWAC head coach "attitude" to the t. You listen to Comegy talk to the team before the game and you will ask for a uni to go and play. LOL. Not alot of Sunday School words in that circle. lol

Now we used to hear stories of how Eddie had them boys up there practicing before everybody else or how he rob all the other teams at Gram of any potential football players. LOL. I remember Hill saying Casem and Rob were both practicing in the country before anybody else knew it.

My old man played for Merritt back in the day when he was in Jackson and he was a trip.

Merritt stole players from under folks noses and I will never forget the time Merritt had Tn State show up at Memorial in their blue home uniforms. Of course JSU had their home unis on. Merritt claimed he didn't know. JSU sent for their away uniforms for the second half and commensed to whooping TnState's arse. Tn State was leading at halftime.

I could go on with Merritt stories. Joe 747 Adams was JSU bound until Merritt got to him. Just sneaky. I wish Prince Hall(Noland "Super Nat" Smith,Sr of the KC Chiefs) was still posting on this board. He played for Big John and he lives in Jackson. I am sure he can tell you some stories.

I was at this game. Odd seeing both team in home unis. At least they weren't the same blue. I look in my sister's yearbook from that year and the football pics have several pics of that game with JSU wearing both blue jersey and white jersey.

The year of the fight between Bob Hill and Casem was 1967, my freshman year. Something happen down in Alcorn the previous year. They said Bob Hill told Casem he was going to kick his *****. Before the game, Bob Hill walked over to the visitor side, slapped Casem and tore his shirt.

Bob Hill would probably still be the coach today if he hadn't slapped Dean Johnson, Peoples said he had to hire him after that. I believe that Bob Hill was the first Jackson State player to play professional football also. He played with the Colts.

Thats what I was about to say. Eddie once tried out for SU's team, and was cut by Mumford. Mumford owned Eddie. Thats how he ended up at Leland.

So how did this come to be a "Bash Eddie Robinson" Thread? Yall need to grow up and realize that it ain't about where a man coached but how he coached. Eddie Robinson did more for Black College football than any man in the history of the game. That's not a knock on Coach Mumford, Nicks, Richardson or anyone else...it's simply a fact.

Coach Rob gave props to Coach Mumford, Nicks, and the late, great Jake Gaither at FAMU. He admitted that as a young coach they taught him a thing or to by beating up on his young embyiotic team that he would later develop into a national power and household name. Sure he lost to those men in his early years...I think he was 1-9 versus Coach Mumford. But what he did was not only learn to win on the field but also take our game to another level.

If you have other coaches that you deem as being more highly ranked, then that's your perogative and right. However, to put down on such a classy guy and leader of men actually shows that some of you would have done well to have known someone of his character. Also, your putdown of Coach Rob actually demeans the very coaches who Eddie learned from while competinig against them.

I wasn't bashing Coach Rob. You can not bash Coach Rob. I wish more people had the dedication, determination, and allocation of talents to be faithful to one thing for so many years as Coach Rob. However, I was stating facts. In no way it was meant to disrespect Coach Rob.

No bruh, I wasn't pointing a finger in any direction per se... these are all great coaches. To be honest, part of our competitiveness towards each other is a reflection of those men. Shiit they tried to beat the hell outta each other when the could. But it made them all stronger cuz you had to bring your a game or your "A" was the game.

Just didn't want a good tribute thread go into smack...lawd knows that happens a lot ( guilty as charged...lol).
