1. Eddie Robinson (Grambling) - ...
2. W. C. Gorden (Jackson State) - Because of the way his teams dominated during his era. His fingerprints are on so much of what JSU is all about. I'd venture to say that as a coach he sent the second most players to the NFL from our conference.
3. A. W. Mumford (Southern) - I believe SU went undefeated for four straight year at one time under Mumford. My grandfather played for him and i've heard some stories about his teams.
4. Marino Casem - Mostly because he was able to be successful at several different SWAC schools. Impact-wise, he's up there on the list.
5. Billy Nicks (PV) - Another of the old school that make you wonder what our programs would be like today if we could still garner the top BLACK talent in the nation each year....

Uh Big........Casem didn't coach PVAM. LOL. I know that's an oversight.

2. AW Mumford- Southern...... NCAA Hall of Fame coach
3. John Merritt- JSU...before he left for Tn State. JSU was winning the SWAC regularly. He is the coach that put them on the map. They took a step backwards after Big John left. Folks seem to forget about him.
4. Billie Nicks - PV......creator of the PV dynasty back in the day
5. WC Gorden- JSU......simply a dominant coach in the SWAC.


Honorable Mention

Marino Casem- Alcorn/SU.... The Godfather was consistently good in a era with Eddie Robinson and WC Gorden in the SWAC.

Pete Richardson- SU..........5 SWAC titles in 14 Seasons.

Where's your list of names? I had to give Pete and Doug honorable mentions because of the multiple championships that they have won as head coaches. I really think James "Big Daddy" Carson would have won multiple championships also...dude was a helluva coach and had JSU playing dominating football. In fact, in hindsight, Eddie Robinson was being matched against two head coaches each time he played JSU (WC Gorden and Carson, the defensive coordinator).

Actually Rob face 4 head coaches when he played JSU.

Gorden, Markham, Carson and Hughes(sorry TP)

I can't remember if Cardell Jones who coached Alcorn was on those 80s JSU coaching staff. If he was that would make 5.
 
I think Bob Hill deserves honorable mention as well. He resurrected JSU's program post- Paige and McPherson :vomit: and assembled much of the staff that made JSU dominant program. Those subsequent staffs spawned several head coaches.

JSU's modern swagger began under Hill.

That is a true fact. Can't forget about Bob Hill. Plus he had those teams with Payton, Slater, Brazile, V.Perry and countless others that went on the NFL.

Didn't Gordon coach Payton also? I know he was coach when they had Perry Harrington and Jeffrey Moore (not sure if he was there with Ricky Patton) who was the immediate successor to Payton at running back.

I used to hear Payton reference Bob Hill all the time... "My Coach at Jackson State, Coach Hill, always told me that if you're gonna die...die hard". Man, he really took his coach to heart. That was the hardest dude to tackle that I've EVER seen in my life. Such determination!!!!!

Gorden was the assistant coach at JSU when Payton played. But yes he did coach Harrington and Moore when both ran over a 1000 yards a piece.

I think Payton's wife Connie is Bob Hill's relative.
 



To those who may not be aware, Mr William "Billy" Nicks is also a Collegiate Hall of Fame coach enshrined in '99 (I think?).

I'd have to mention Bob Hill before I mentioned Merritt... Now if he had stayed at JSU longer I don't doubt he would have made HUGE impact. We did win our first SWAC Championship with him though. But when you look at the full body of work:

Merritt: 2 SWAC Titles, 1 Black College National Championship, 62-38-5 overall record at JSU.

Hill: 3 SWAC Titles in five years, 40-12-1 overall record.

Hill was on Paige's and McPherson's staff... but got so frustrated with the losing under McPherson that he quit and just coached baseball. He told the prez he could take McPherson's SAME PLAYERS and win the conference.. and he did.

WHAT ABOUT CHARLIE BATES FROM WHAT I KNOW HE WAS RAN OFF BECAUSE HE COULD NOT BEAT SU BIG 3 GSU FAMU AND JSU ON CONSISTANT BASIS BUT STILL HAS SOME SWAC TITLES IN GRAMBLING HAY DAY.

The stories I've heard about Gordon and his assistants going at it at practices. Cardell was definitely on staff, too. That was a lot of knowledge on that staff. Old players have me :lmao: at the stuff said between them coaches. Gordon didn't take any ole thang, and his assistants let him know what was up.

Anyway, my list mirrors everybody elses. Eddie Rob, Ace Mumford, Nicks, Gordon and Casem. Richardson and Doug definitely deserve mentioning. Considering that I never saw a Mumford or Nicks coached team, Pete and Doug would be in the top 5, if I only went with coaches I've seen.
 
On the subject of great coaches.... Anyone wanna share the story of when BOB HILL kicked CASEM'S ASS in the middle of the field at Memorial?

I just hear the part when the sound of Bob Hill's SLAP across Casem's face was heard. They be too busy laughing to finish the story.

Yeah that's when Bob Hill slapped Casem if I am not mistaken. I can't remember how old I was. But I was at the game. My old man was :lmao: when that happened. Bob Hill had a hair trigger temper from what I was told.

JSU has usually had some mean coaches. Merritt, Hill, Gorden, Big Daddy was cool but didn't play.
