Grambling signs 30

I think most of us have missed the boat on this one. TOPS is not given by the university. It is given by the state of Louisiana. I recieved TOPS on graduating high school. If I would have choose to go to any state school then I would have gotten tution paid for through TOPS regradless if I would have gone to Grambling, LSU, or Northwestern State. No school controls who the state gives the scholarships to. That is done when the child is in high school by looking at the individual's GPA and ACT score.

As for the number of signings by Grambling... This has nothing to do with number of football scholarships avaiable. You must send in a letter of intent to the NCAA for every person who is going to play football. Including walkons... So, the number of signings may be big but it has nothing to do with who received scholarships. You must take into account that not all of the players from each year's class continue on with the program. Some decide not to play football and some transfer. Also, Prop players cannot received scholarships on leaving high school.

Taking all of that into effect... The numbers look big but aren't want you may be thinking. There are a lot of kids in LA that want to play for both Southern and Grambling. Doug just doesn't limit himself to football scholarships available. When he recruits, he tells the kids that he doesn't have a scholarship available for him but he still wants him. Explains that there are other ways to get into college. Grants, Loans, Academic Scholarships, Waivers, Other Atheletic Scholarships (Track, B-ball, etc)... That's how all the big boys do it at other schools. This is far from limited to Grambling.

This is the same thing that a college recruiter would do for a regular student. If the student wants to go to Grambling or whatever college, the recruiter will explain all the ways that the student has available to get there. These kids we are talking about just happen to want to play football and Doug wants them to play for us. Most of these kids wouldn't even go to college if not for the opportunity to play football.

You are right, they just don't announce them as football signees. Either they are football signees (letters of intent) or they are perspective students. You can't have it both way.

If you are going to play a sport in college, scholarship or not, the appropriate paper work must be filled out in order to be cleared by the NCAA.

This thread is a whole new level of hateration by some. :smh: Look at the bigger picture. Regardless of what university the child signed with recognize that this is another child being given and taking the opportunity to get a higher education.

Apparently, Doug has studied the criteria laid out by the state and the limitations set by NCAA and is interpretating them to see how they can be used to GSU's advantage when he's recruiting. Don't assume that something illegal iis going on just because your coach hasn't mastered recruiting.

Instead of asking how to do something successfully, our people say something negative. The lack of seeking knowledge is one of our greatest downfalls. Instead of congratulating each other,we put each other down.:smh: And we wonder why our race is so far behind.

***Excuse me*** Kenn, I think we need a hateration forum for the haters to vent. There need not be a reply button on the thread. Replies aren't necessary, just hate postings. Maybe it'll get out of their system quicker if they release.

You know what is truly sad, is that what I see all over this post is people talking about an issue that they know nothing about.
I have seen so many false statements from both sides about recruiting, Letters of Intent, finacial aid for atheletics, TOPS, and the likes, but it is just too much to try and tell all of you people how wrong you are about some issues.

I repeat my earlier statement. If anything rules were violated we will be dealt with accordingly, but considering this is the 2nd year in a row we have signed 30 plus players, there must not be any wrong doing taking place.

The signees didn't list any of the represented HBCU's as prospective schools. Notice that Doug was able to lure some of these players for Division I programs. This is a sign that we can attract the best talent available. When I say, we I mean the entire conference. Granted no school can match Gram's name recognition nor Doug's rep from his Superbowl Days. But you must remember that most of these kids don't remember Doug as an athlete. What they see is a man who is winning championships and continuing a legacy of Greatness. Don't mean to boast, but dayum when you're this good ...THE TRUTH SOUNDS LIKE BOASTING!

Let's put name recognition in perspective. Your name is much better known to older people than the younger ones. By the time these cats we're recruiting today were born, Gram wasn't nearly as dominant. But your name is still LARGE, I agree. I won't discount the Doug factor. First time I met him in person I was excited, and I was in my mid-20s. So, I know these kids can get hyped about him.

In all seriousness, this shows that our conference can recruit agasinst others and come away with our share of players. It takes a lot of hard work by the staff and alumni in those areas to
get the job done. Lord knows I talked to the Banks kid whenever he came by the house. I kept telling him he needed to attend school with his older brother and add his name to the list of outstanding players at GSU.

He used to tell me he wanted to go up against the best...I told him to ask his brother if the guys he was competing against were garbage or potential NFL guys. I pointed out to him that once he got to Grambling he would not be homesick because of the many EBR parish students there and the closeness that developed. His older brother even commented on how "old neighborhood hostilities" between kids from various parts of BR got squashed once you went away to college at GSU.

I think the visits helped, the conversations and the final visit by Doug to the kid's home. Bottom line----> We can get these kids, but we got to work!
