Thirty is the magic number of first day signees for Grambling

Grambling, LA - One year ago the Grambling State University Tigers were faced with replacing 27 letterman from the 2001 season. They answered the dilemma by receiving 31 national letters of intent on National Signing Day 2002.

A year later, Grambling only needed to replace 10 letterman but still they turned in one of the best recruiting class the Tigers have seen with thirty first day signees.

"We are very pleased with the players and level of talent we were able to recruit," said head football coach Doug Williams. "It's a testament to the hard work our coaches put in in the off-season."

John Jones DB 5-10 175 Winnfield, LA Winnfield H.S.
Played DB, QB and WR; 3-year starter at quarterback, 4-year starter on basketball team, 4-years triple-jump on track team; All-District Quarterback.

Alfred Mike DB 6-0 180 Houston, TX Madison H.S.
Cover specialist; 1st team All-District, 42 solo 16 assisted 58 total tackles, 12 interceptions. 4.48 - forty yard dash; also recruited by Colorado, TCU, Texas Southern and Mississippi State

Hosea Atkinson DT 6-4 305 Houston, TX B. T. Washington H.S.
24 sacks, bench press 425, 13th rated prospect Heartland Publications, 3 years All-District. Also recruited by TCU, Nebraska, Texas Tech and LSU

Derrick Hubert DT 6-2 290 Houston, TX B. T. Washington H.S.
1st team All-District, 4.85 - forty yard, bench press 405 llb, Power Clean 315; also recruited by Mississippi State, Morgan State, TCU and Texas A&M

I was thinking the same thing, knowing that the max of scholarships is 63. Now how many of those new 30 are prop 48 kids. I know a lot of those from H-town don't have the grades....
 
remember, ya'll all were laughing at us this time last year and now ya'll want to know how we do it. i do know that one of the DT and the RB from h-town has the grades.
 
don't forget scholarships are a one year deal. so would you renew a scholarship for a kid who has been in your program for three years and he still can't break into the two deep on the depth chart? just asking, but i already know that DOUG would'nt.
 
Like I said before. Many of these kids are not on schalorships...especially the recruits from the state of LA. If you know how the system really works, you can find legal loop holes to make it work for you.
 
I'm guessing their tuition is being paid for outside of the athletic budget. Good for the football team, not so good for the school if that's the case. Either way, it looks like a great class.
 
SOG, you correct and it works for awhile, but you know someone will have to account for graduation rates and NCAA Certification down the road.

How is this not good for the school if the State of Louisiana is waving tuition for in state students that attend Louisiana public colleges?

MD,

Gram's athletic program has one of the best graduation rates in the state. We have proven that we will let players go that don't do the work in the classroom. (See Brad Hill)

There already has been some murmors last year doug asked coach graves if they give him up and coach had to put him in check. He's really setting his self up for trouble putting it in the paper like that is the issue if you don't see it you have no reason to question

I wish Doug and Gram all the luck in the world (except when they play S.U.).

Doug has a built in recruiting tool. He was a Super Bowl MVP and have contacts in the NFL. No one should be suprised at what Doug and Gram does recruiting wise.

It is time for that hardware to come back on the bluff!

Cant wait until it all kicks off again in 7 months!

Doug has been able to have success with most of his prop signees. Don't know how he convinces most of them to accept a
red-shirt year when they come off "prop" status. It really helps them to get back in the groove athletically and academically. Some of them have even graduated and regain the prop year.

Of course all of the kids don't stick around. It is very competitive and playing time has to be earned. We lose a few along the way, but the assembly line keeps on churning out good players.
