You Grambling folks are so impatient and mean. You can't judge that kid according to what he did against TCU. Doug knows what he is doing. I think most if you hate the fact that he knows what he is doing.

Dray was 13-19 with 3 drops vs New Mexico. Dray has outplayed JP this fall in practice, while JP has struggled throwing numerous int's in practice. I like JP also but Dray earned the job.

GRAMBLING — Dawrence Roberts' desire to prove himself as the top back on the field Saturday took on added meaning this week.

The SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year was looking forward to Grambling's Week 3 matchup with Alabama State and former Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell, and now he'll also be competing with his teammates for carries.

Coach Doug Williams said on Monday that freshman Jeremy Runner has been the highlight of the Tigers' backfield thus far, but Roberts is eager to show he's the G-men's man.

"This week is a big week, especially for me," the Clearwater, Fla., native said. "I feel like the coaches are not trusting me right now, so I wanna show them they can trust me if I can get the ball ... The thing with me is I'm hoping and praying I get carries and make the most of my opportunities and make plays."

Williams said he hadn't seen Roberts run the ball "as hard" as the coaches would like him to, while Runner has been "the guy that's showing enthusiasm running the football."

Is Roberts a Broadway Recruit?

I have always believed that no matter the talent of a group of players, any GOOD, SOLID coach can COACH them to be a winning Championship Calibur team..Real Talk.
 
I'm somewhat puzzled... During Fall Camp, Coach Williams praised Roberts for his work ethic and how he was leading by example and looking impressive. Then in week one against Alcorn, Roberts was ripping off long runs and picking up first downs (didn't play second half due to needing an IV), then he gets 5 carries against TCU and if not for his quickness and moves, would have been thrown for losses on 3 of those. Now all of sudden he's not running hard? Interesting!

The first pick was thrown into triple coverage. There was a protection breakdown on the fumble, and by protection breakdown, I mean the line escorted three defenders to the QB. Still, he has yet to develop a feel for the pocket, and it's not like New Mexico disguised that blitz. I still haven't figure out why Stump tried to throw Hawkins under the bus on the last pick.

Apparantly, Doug must not think Broadway's recruits are worth much. This often happens at FBS and FCS when a new coach comes in to replace a coach that is fired due to poor performance. HOWEVER, in Grambling's case, Broadway was a WINNING coach. Naturally, if a coach such as Broadway leaves WINNING, then the next coach is expected automatically to win due to Alumni believing that the previous coach left a "winning recruiting class". A Good Example of Grambling's current situation is the early 2000s Miami Hurricanes when Larry Coker took over for Butch Davis. Any person who claims to be a good coach can take a previous coach's players and "coach them up" to be Championship Calibur. In Doug's mind, he feels that he needs to get HIS players to be successful.

The more Doug criticizes players that Alumni SEE can produce, the more he indirectly says that Broadway was a better coach.

Doug already has already run off a QB that many alumni felt was productive (And don't bring grades into this conversation. I'm talking production on the field). Running Roberts off (A PRE-SEASON OFFENSIVE SWAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR) will severely damage his credibility.

:emlaugh: lol Man, this intra-alum bickering is tickling the hell out of me. :lol: Who started all this? lol Hell, I don't bicker w/ the intelligent more recent young(er) alums of Prairie View, because they're intelligent and it's expected that they have GREAT(er) comprehension and reasoning abilities since it was THEY who singlehandedly RETURNED Prairie View to its current athletic competitivity by increasing THEIR OWN fees to fund athletics :read:. But these old(er) coots? Dumb muthafukkas. 87% of them since only 13% of us were even qualified to be in ANY university setting from the outset :D (PV's olden >13% 4-yr grad rate). When it comes to athletics, they're stuck on a special blend of stupid. lolololol :D

I disagree! Doug isn't petty on things like that... remember, he played Mario Louis last year and the entire Offensive Line was recruited by the previous staff. I disagree with Doug on things, but he doesn't play favorites in regard to who coached them or recruited them. Can't let you go there with that one!

True MB, Doug is not playing favorites. My point of view is, Strangly to me, Doug is just doing what he feels he needs to do to win. To me, he feels that he must recruit his type of player to be successful. Of course a coach is not come to say that outright because he does not want to offend Alumni who saw Broadway as a winning coach. Coaches are not going to always be honest with alumni. If I were in their shoes, I wouldn't either because you can't tell everything in order to be successful. BUT, the TRUTH (Most of the Time) will always reveal itself on the football field in the end anyway. An example of this is Comegy because Comegy is INFAMOUS for his "Coach Speak" as we like to call it.

But also MB, some Coaches have this strategy of riding a player a little bit "too" hard in practice in hopes that he'll either be better or in hopes that he'll quit. With what Doug is saying in this latest article, one would have to lean more toward the latter than the former.

I don't think he's "down" on Roberts as much as he's "high" on Runner... Now Runner is a good player, so is Roberts and he's proven. I don't know if Doug has a preference or not but the smart thing (imo) is to use every bullet in the gun. If his intent is to "spark a fire" under Roberts (which I don't see where it's needed), clearly it has. Roberts is a tough kid and strong willed... he kinda put a challenge to the coaches "Give me the rock" seems to be his DEMAND. Personally, I'd give it to him, Runner, and Cedric Skinner until they all had to spend the nite in the ICE tube!
