Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Do you even understand what you're saying when you type? Gessh

But thanks for informing us of who, would and wouldn't want to participate, HNIC of the entire NCAA.

So oh wise blue one, let us know just who would replace Grambling outside of te SWAC or D2

Since you're so bright

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Also, when you lose a huge title sponsor like State Farm, that hurts.

Sidenote: Bayou Classic tickets just went on sale last week. Funny how this all comes out now.

But yeah, this is pretty damn sad. Bruno is in NO position to say who can or cannot play in the Bayou Classic. To say that Grambling can't play in the BC is almost the equivalent to saying that Southern must play in it. Who is he to make this comment.

I don't know all of the details, but I guess this is what happens when the folks at GSU and SU decided part ways with the Bickerstaff Group (a black owned company) that previously managed and organized the Bayou Classic, for the local (white owned) New Orleans Convention Company Inc (NOCCI) to run the BC instead.

BTW, did I mention that BC tickets just went on sale last week?

Losing State Farm as a title sponsor has nothing to do with this situation. The larger point is that this Robert Bruno guy, who has nothing to do with with the organization of the Bayou Classic, other than to just make sure the lights in the Superdome stay on during the course of an event (something they failed to do during the Super Bowl), had the audacity to speak as if he knows what's better for the Bayou Classic.

He has no role in this issue other than to collect rent.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

To me, there are too many hands in the pot that seem to plague Healthy Classics... In most cases, including this one, Third Parties are slowly killing the Classic.
Last year's Classic was a Snooze Fest.... But it was a great time to bring my kids because it wasn't too crowded.

Let's face it folks, Bayou Classic 2000s is NOTHING like Bayou Classic 1970s, 80s, 90s........... Folks must begin to be creative if this is to survive.

Now let's not get it twisted.... Folks are STILL in New Orleans, however, there is no longer an interest in the game itself.

Exactly....

What we should be asking is why is there a continuous downfall in attendance.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

2004 Classic was the last well attended Classic. People can blame Katrina all they want but its more to that.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

This would be a bad move to take GSU out of this classic. Even though the attendance has gotten weak the BC still has potential to get back where it was. Then again depending on how you slice both schools probably would come out on top if they move the game to a home and home. I didn't do the math so don't hold that statement against me. Most classics don't serve a purpose for HBCU's anyways. As far as the ATL classic, its trash. 25k is weak for a classic game when you can bank that at home. SU and FAMU should always play a home and home.

I was about to reply but I saw this in bold. lol

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

When I think of Bayou Classic, I think of Southern Louisiana. The word bayou refers to the small streams or rivers and marshlands typically found in Southern Louisiana. It is a reference to a place - New Orleans - rather than the teams participating in it.

Of course, Baton Rouge and Southern University are also located in bayou country adding legitimacy. Grambling, not so much.

It will very well still be the Bayou Classic without Grambling.

My family comes from an area that is called Bayou Rapides in Alexandria, LA, which is in Central Louisiana (CENLA). Bayou Rapides is the largest tributary that flows through Alexandria to the Red River. Alexandria is located in Rapides Parish, which means rapids in French for the rapid river (Red River) that flows through Alexandria. There are bayous all through the State of Louisiana, which is why it is called the Bayou State. The first area settled by the French Creoles in Louisiana was Natchitoches, LA, which is located approximately 45 to 50 miles northwest of Alexandria.

Alexandria is on a level plain in the center of the Louisiana Longleaf Pine forests, in which pine is interspersed with various hardwoods. A number of small bayous, such as Bayou Rapides, Bayou Robert, and Hynson Bayou, meander throughout the city. In the immediate vicinity of the city, cotton, sugar, alfalfa, and garden vegetables are cultivated.

Cool. Been to both Alexandria and Nachitoches many, many times. :)

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

did he say bayou's are only in south Louisiana?

Absolutely not. I said "typically". Never said they weren't anywhere else. There are bayous all along the Gulf Coast - Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida - in addition to throughout Louisiana. I was actually just trolling that know-it-all JSU girl. :emlaugh:

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Folks read behind the lines....New Orleans does not want the bayou classic. Just talk to the business owners around New Orleans. Half of them close up shop the week of the game. As everything is in "black" and "white," they want our money but don't want to put up with us at the sametime. Hotels jack up prices, you can go right now and look up a national chain hotel for rates during the weekend of thanksgiving and it will say "not available."

I went to the BOTB in 2011, after my friends and I went to a bar in the french quarter and they told us they were closed at 9:25pm on a Friday. Tell me what bar in New Orleans closes at 9:25pm on a holiday weekend? Its crazy that we continue to go to places that don't want our business. I suggest going to a city that will welcome the long tradition with open arms.

This was more the case back in the 80s and early 90s than it is today. Most businesses I see are open and inviting. The hotel prices are very reasonable that weekend as well (Hyatt regency for $155/night last year vs $400+ for Essence and Mardi Gras).

I hear ya. But what other city?
Houston was NOT a good fit for the Bayou Classic. Remember this was done 2005, after Hurricane Katrina.

Could it be different now? I dunno...

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I have no clue. This is depressing. I rather go to the FCS playoffs anyway. What value does the SWAC have by hosting a championship game? Those every now and then good teams won't have a chance to prove themselves against teams outside of the conference anyway. SWAC is the laughing stock of college football. Like Ric Flair use to say "to be the man, you have to beat the man." This conference has to open up the opportunity for that to happen if it really wants to grow.

I will remember that you said I know it all....and I will remember that you admitted to being a troll on 6/19/2014.

I knew I should have put know-it-all in quotes. As far as "trolling" goes, you didn't know if that was my honest opinion or not. Or me just having a little harmless fun with you.
